Chapter 1087: Chapter 1087: Accompanying a King is Like Accompanying a Tiger

At night, after a busy day, Leng Le returned home and saw the mysterious masked man comfortably sitting in the study, legs crossed and one hand supporting his head, his eyes brimming with excitement as if eager for Leng Le’s return.

Leng Le cracked a small smile, "You always come to my place without notice, leaving me no chance to greet you in my best form."

"It’s okay, even without any special preparation, you still shine bright." The masked man said as he stood up, walked over to Leng Le, wrapped his arms around her waist, and added, "Have you taken care of the task I gave you?"

"You can trust my work. The person you wanted me to recruit, I’ve already brought under my wing, but..." Leng Le hesitated slightly before admitting, "There were some issues. While recruiting this person, another group beat us to it. To win this person over, my subordinates clashed with another gang."

The man in the mask responded indifferently, "As long as that person is brought in, fighting is trivial; it’s not a big deal."

Leng Le looked worried, "But the problem is, this fight seems to have drawn the attention of Su Hui, Gu Fan, and Lin Xi, and I have no idea why."

"Oh, did you expose yourself?" The masked man suddenly became tense.

Leng Le answered, "It’s common for gangs to fight and recruit. We often stir up trouble and recruit people. Gu Fan and Su Hui never came to check the scene themselves, why did they appear this time?"

The masked man speculated, "It might just be a coincidence. After all, Su Hui is specifically in charge of the security of this city, responding to incidents, and Gu Fan was with her, so he came along, and Lin Xi also had matters to discuss with Gu Fan, hence she went too."

With that, Leng Le expressed a slight smile, "Or there might be another possibility,—the individual we recruited as per your instructions is quite unique, unique enough to pique the interest of Gu Fan and Su Hui."

"What do you mean?" The masked man’s tone grew significantly stern, devoid of the earlier friendly demeanor.

Unruffled, Leng Le continued, "This disturbance involving Gu Fan, Su Hui, and Lin Xi must have a special reason. I did some digging and found out that the person we just recruited seems weak on the surface, but actually holds a critical trait, one that you nearly managed to hide from me."

Hearing this, the masked man firmly grasped Leng Le’s waist, as if cautioning her to be careful with her words.

Leng Le, unperturbed, shared her suspicion, "At first, I was puzzled when you instructed me to establish gangs in several cities and recruit people, specifically those designated by you."

"Only after this incident did I thoroughly investigate this frail individual we had just recruited, recognizing his unique trait. I then checked if others we had been recruiting across various cities shared this distinction."

"And what did you find?" asked the masked man with a chillingly calm voice, seemingly displeased by surprises.

Leng Le replied with a slight smile, "You asked me to recruit so many people into the gang, merely to cover up your true target. Out of those, only a handful truly have distinguished traits. Your strategy was clever; I almost got deceived."

"Smart as I am, you still caught on. I knew you were clever and would figure it out sooner or later." The masked man’s tone softened, and his lethal intent vanished, seemingly unbothered that his intentions were discerned by Leng Le.

Leng Le added, "If it weren’t for this fight over recruiting between my gang and another, which led Gu Fan, Su Hui, and Lin Xi to the scene, I might never have noticed the unique aspect of the person we recruited."

"Now, I’m worried that Gu Fan, Su Hui, and Lin Xi might also recognize this individual’s unique trait." The masked man’s voice deepened, fraught with concern, "I don’t want any complications, make sure you handle this properly."

"Don’t worry, I’ve checked it out. I understand why this fight was significant enough to shock these three. It involved someone named Lin Yue, though I’m not sure of his relationship with Lin Xi, I suspect it’s significant. I’ll continue to investigate Lin Yue’s background." Just as Leng Le finished speaking, she saw the masked man sigh in relief, "No need for that. I know who this Lin Yue is. He’s Lin Xi’s long-lost brother."

"I see, that also explains why the fight involving his gang attracted their presence," Leng Le finally understood, yet was surprised how the masked man knew about Lin Yue as soon as he heard his name; it was as if he had intimate knowledge of Gu Fan, Su Hui, and Lin Xi’s lives.

A point still puzzled Leng Le, prompting her to ask, "I remember you approaching me initially to strike at Gu Fan, which is why I agreed eagerly. But looking at your actions, it seems you’re not just targeting Gu Fan. Don’t forget, I’ve been through some things too; I can guess the specialty and purpose of the people you asked me to find."

"You are indeed very clever, Leng Le, but some things are better left unknown," he replied before suddenly seizing Leng Le by the throat and warning her harshly, "Listen well. You only need to accomplish what I’ve assigned to you; don’t ask about anything else. There will be benefits for you in the end."

Leng Le felt extremely uncomfortable but could only nod weakly to indicate compliance.

The masked man didn’t let go so easily; he intensified his tone, "Another thing to remember—I’m not aiding Gu Fan. I meant it when I said I was targeting him. Some things that seem beneficial are actually harmful. He must endure unending torment. Right?"

After letting go, Leng Le collapsed to the ground, gasping heavily; her heart chilled by the unseasonable mood swings of the masked man, who was even more difficult to serve than a boss.

Yet, Leng Le was troubled by the words of the masked man; could it be that he really isn’t helping Gu Fan but rather ensuring his life is filled with endless suffering?

Ignoring Leng Le, the masked man walked past her, but before leaving, he turned subtly and asked, "Just now, were you questioning whether I’m helping or opposing Gu Fan? Let me ask you this—do you truly wish me to target Gu Fan? What would you do if Gu Fan was truly in danger? Why do you detest Gu Fan so much?"

Leng Le didn’t answer, merely giving a bitter smile, perhaps not even she knew what her heart truly desired.
