Chapter 222: Chapter 201: Demonic Race, Extraordinary Powers
In the dark of night, a shadow moved silently, and as it passed by various areas, the bodies of some small flying insects stiffened momentarily before resuming their original flight paths.
"Shadow Stealth·Revised!"
"Insects Control·Revised!"
Although these were just two zero-order witchcraft techniques of the Wizard Apprentice level, their strength lay in their concealment and silence. Even if an abnormal fluctuation were noticed, it would not attract much attention from other "players" in the chaotic scene at hand.
"Among the seven breaths near the family castle, the closest one to me is the ’maid’ I have marked." Lucien quietly speculated on the possible identities of these players and contemplated if there was some "commonality" in the roles they played.
"Eh?" Lucien’s steps paused slightly. Through the perspective of those insects, Lucien had now spotted the "true player identity" of that maid.
She resembled a slightly otherworldly humanoid creature with the physique of a twenty-year-old woman, but instead of hair, she had pairs of soft, snail-like antennae on her head.
Around her neck were two rows of special "slits" that resembled the gill slits of a shark. However, according to Lucien’s assessment, these "slits" were probably not for breathing but for "filtering" dispersed Magic Essence in the air.
"A completely new creature from another world..." Lucien’s eyes gleamed with excitement. After all, for a wizard, new biological specimens were among the most precious treasures. Dissecting or studying their bodies could expand one’s knowledge and also yield some rare and natural rune patterns.
Lucien had no sympathy for these otherworldly beings, and naturally, dissecting their bodies wouldn’t cause him much guilt.
However, Lucien soon curbed his desire to collect new specimens.
He stealthily trailed the otherworldly creature while also deploying the insects he controlled to scatter toward the area where the creature was, allowing him to monitor her actions at any time through the eyes of one of the insects.
"What is she searching for?" Lucien observed the alien’s movements quietly and noticed that she seemed to be exploring aimlessly, her actions exceedingly cautious and showing a strong interest in empty rooms, not missing any corner.
It looked more like... mapping.
Lucien slowly clenched his right fist, feeling somewhat disappointed.
"I thought I could learn more from this individual, but it seems I was naive to think so." Lucien felt somewhat helpless.
Watching the alien’s movements, he could somewhat guess her experiences in the Dream World.
She must have stumbled upon a few drops of ink during her "mapping" process and, after learning about the benefits of ink or realizing its value, began adventurously exploring a larger area in hopes of finding more ink or other valuable resources.
Following such a "lucky newbie" might allow him to share in her luck, but more likely, he might end up empty-handed, or even worse, led into a trap.
"Let’s observe for two or three days first, so I don’t end up biting on some other player’s ’bait’ and getting caught as a big fish." After a night of observation, Lucien ultimately did not make a move, simply watching the otherworldly player safely return.
After all, this was no game; there were no options to load a previous save or to resurrect. A wrong choice could mean death.
"The sky is about to brighten, and I wonder what special changes will occur when I revert to my original identity..." Lucien looked toward a wisp of dawn in the east and hurried to his bedroom.
But before he reached his bedroom, he felt an invisible force bind his body, and the next moment, the world spun around him.
Lucien felt like he was drawn into a vortex he couldn’t resist, and when he regained control of his body, he found himself merged back with Lurah and back in his identity’s bedroom.
However, Lucien felt dreadful. The somewhat rough teleportation had attacked his body with intense dream forces, leaving colorful patches imbued with dream energy on his true body.
"It seems returning to one’s body late also has a price. If I were completely transformed into a dream creature in the Land of Reality, I’d probably end up suppressed by the rules here like Helen Wizard, becoming a living dead object..."
Lucien silently noted the lesson. However, he now needed to take advantage of the moments when Earl Sanaxis was still lucid to inquire about details regarding the Land of Reality; otherwise, his objectives within the Land of Reality seemed vague.
It’s unlikely the goal is to simply identify and eliminate all other "players," right?
Lucien muttered to himself while also sharing his confusion with Earl Sanaxis, hoping to glean some useful information from this veteran of the Dream Layer.
"Two-legged furry monster, if I knew these details, I wouldn’t have needed you to come here," Earl Sanaxis’s voice conveyed a trace of helplessness.
"Dreams aren’t something that can be easily explained. But don’t you know the Dream Master’s information from the rules? The formation of dreams stems from some sort of obsession of the Dream Master, which should be the core element...."
Earl Sanaxis’s voice grew fainter and soon went into a deep sleep under the oppressive rules of the "Land of Reality."
"Dream Master... Obsession... Core..." Lucien pondered these keywords repeatedly, his mind brimming with ideas.
"It seems this afternoon’s visit is critical; I need to use this opportunity to meet with the Dream Master, Rafael, and understand the main storyline of this dream. Oh, and I also need to learn more about this Dream World. Perhaps some insight into its worldview might reveal parts of the main storyline..."
Lucien quickly set his goals for the day and seamlessly began his role for today.
...
"Have you heard? A Class C demon nest was discovered on the western borders of the kingdom..."
"Frank, congratulations, with your current strength, you could probably pass the ’Level 1 Warrior Assessment’ at the Awakening Temple by now, right? With your power, you could smoothly become a squad leader..."
"Last night, young master Carol wet the bed again, stirring until late before he could sleep. I envy that you’re taking care of Miss Lurah..."
"Young master, Transcendent powers are not so easy to control. Though you’ve awakened ’fire’ through the Awakening Stone, you need to learn to control this power. It will take prolonged study and practice to solidify this ability; awakening is just the beginning of mastering supernatural powers..."
...
Using the "face recognition," Lucien casually passed through many areas inside the family that morning, and despite brief stays, he gathered quite a bit of useful information.
Among this was some basic information about this world, which allowed Lucian to piece together a general picture of the scenario.
In this world, there are Transcendents and supernatural professions, and these Transcendents collaboratively resist humanity’s common enemy—the "demons."
The nests that produce demons continuously form in various corners of the world, giving rise to various types of demons or beasts driven by them. Simultaneously, these demon nests also yield precious resources, such as... Awakening Stones.
Awakening Stones can awaken some special and powerful "talents" or abilities in humans, endowing ordinary humans with particular strengths, such as physical robustness comparable to or even surpassing that of demons, or the ability to manipulate natural forces like fire, thunder, or frost.
While resisting demons, humans also continuously strengthen their own power from defeating them.
In short, this is a world invaded by demons. To draw a comparison, it’s somewhat akin to the background setting of Swords, Magic, and Dungeons.
However, the information Lucien obtained was pieced together from snippets of conversations he overheard, which were surely vague, and possibly even contained some inaccuracies.
Yet from the current information, it seemed the core goal might be related to the demons.
Could it be that the Dream Master’s objective was to defeat the demons or some formidable entity within them?
Lucien speculated, but for some reason, he felt that the core goal of this dream wouldn’t be so simple.
"It’s unfortunate, the information I currently have is still too scant. After all, no one would foolishly talk about formal matters to a five-year-old child. Sometimes, when they realized I was around, they would consciously stop speaking or shift the topic, as if afraid of harming my ’delicate emotions’..."
Lucien felt somewhat helpless. His efforts at gathering information revealed a significant drawback of his assumed identity—it was subject to "not suitable for children" restrictions!
"It’s a mix of advantages and disadvantages, I guess. If my identity were of an older age, I’d probably have difficulty freely entering other people’s rooms," Lucien consoled himself. However, he soon pondered the second key point he discovered this morning.
That was regarding the supernatural powers within this Dream World.
