Chapter 463: Chapter 463: The Last Spark

"You’ve already seen what this world has turned into. Who do you think you should believe?" Lin Yan countered.

"Maybe this is just another dead world, or some Great Void, who knows—I’ve been through countless battles. I’ve seen it all," Chen Ke said irritably.

Chen Ke found a large crate and sat down on it, his mouth dry and his head buzzing. He no longer had the strength to argue.

"It’s clear you’ve been through a lot, but do you really think this place is just another abandoned space-time?" Lin Yan continued to ask.

Chen Ke didn’t answer. He was now a normal person, without any abilities, and completely unarmed.

"You already have the answer in your heart. You just don’t want to face it. This is the base reality, the end of time, and you are but an echo from a world after a certain restart. Thus, your abilities, your equipment, they no longer exist," Lin Yan added.

"If this is truly the real appearance of this world, then what can you all do? The whole world is left with only me, an unreal human being. Is this what your restart of the timeline could achieve? What do you want me to do for you? Go out there barehanded and fight with gods? Why should it be me? I was just enjoying hotpot and singing songs, and after sleeping one night, I found myself transported here. How do you think I’ve survived these past months? The Foundation couldn’t even kill the Clan, and now you still want to kill gods?" Chen Ke sighed.

"We can’t do it, but that doesn’t mean mankind can’t. That’s also why we used the power of gods to interfere with the timeline. To replay the history of Homo sapiens over and over again in its dream, hoping that one time, humans will find a way to kill the gods. But each time, humanity collapses due to internal issues," Lin Yan said.

"It sounds like you’re just hiding in your bunker buying lottery tickets. Since you can’t kill gods, what is this thing?" Chen Ke looked at the white colossus and asked.

"It was on the brink of death at birth. We just happened to obtain it, codenamed HCP0001, a last resort of the Foundation. We call it ’Mechanical Divine Descent’; its dreams can form a melody that interferes with the timeline, capable of traversing between reality and dreams. But when the echoes of the dreams cross over to reality, its existence is just a superimposed state, which means you both exist and don’t exist. And you’ve lost all abilities you had in the dreams," Lin Yan explained.

"Are you saying, I’ve been living in a dream... I can’t accept that. That feeling... was so real, how could it be just a dream?" Chen Ke said.

"Divine’s Dream is just a name the Foundation uses for this kind of ability. We still can’t explain the principles of this dream state scientifically, but using it to reverse time is feasible. Your life did truly exist, but it is in the past. We simply used the power of the gods to restart that period of time, infusing it with factors that would only arise in the far future, hoping humans could interact with and utilize that supernatural power earlier, to find a way to defeat the gods," Lin Yan elucidated.

"With every restart, there are slight deviations in the progression of human history, historical milestone events for each nation and ethnicity might occur earlier or later, and names might change, but without exception, they all come into contact with supernatural powers earlier, which also leads to the birth of opposing organizations like the Foundation and the Divine Descent Sect," Lin Yan continued.

"That’s why the United Federation is not called the United States... and in that timeline, humans officially revealed the existence of Spiritual Energy to the world in 1910... Why do the Foundation and the Divine Descent Sect plague every single restart?" Chen Ke asked.

"Because they represent humanity’s two perspectives on Transcendent powers, the struggle between reason and sensibility. But neither has found the answer to resolve the issue, so they’re not important," Lin Yan said.

"Then the nation I lived in, and that era... were they also part of a restart?" Chen Ke asked.

"No, you come from the history of our world, and in that era, there were no non-human forces. If I remember correctly, this year should be 2137, and you come from 2018," Lin Yan said.

"The divine being is about to die. It was already a deformed fetus at birth, and each restart costs a life. You just said our foundation is only hiding in a bunker, buying lottery tickets, but let me ask you, have you seen any living people?" Lin Yan said.

"Not even a corpse," Chen Ke answered truthfully.

"They, including myself, are all in these jars. The price of the divine being’s restart of the world is a human life, and it requires a brain with very high neural activity. The foundation has gathered the world’s top scientists and scholars, all of them lying here inside, and with each restart of the world, one dies. And I am the last one; I’m in jar number 999. Would you like to see me?" Lin Yan said.

Chen Ke leaped down from the box and walked to the right side of the white colossus, stopping in front of jar number 999. He caressed the jar’s surface, and with a snap the outer shell loosened, opening the protective cover in front to reveal the glass bottle encased inside.

The glass bottle was filled with green liquid. A bald woman curled up inside, her body reduced to skin and bones, sustained only by the nutrient solution. Her eyes were tightly shut, motionless like a fetus still in amniotic fluid, her body pierced with various tubes.

"How... are you talking to me?" Chen Ke asked.

"I connected my brain to the computer, forming a stream of consciousness. After restarting the world, my life force was nearly depleted. Now, I can only live for about one more week. When that time comes, the power supply and life-sustaining devices in this underground shelter will stop, and then humanity will truly become history," Lin Yan said.

"After 999 restarts, the foundation will not have the strength to initiate another. That’s why I summoned you from subjective reality to base reality. When restarting the world, I also launched the divine being’s power into that new world. When a soul from base reality combines with a body from subjective reality, that person will become the transcendent among humans, leading humanity through a new childhood... Clearly, I’ve succeeded, and you are that incarnation of the divine being. You will walk through space and time, becoming the guardian of humanity," Lin Yan continued.

"Why me...? Don’t tell me I’m the reincarnation of that white blob," Chen Ke said.

"There’s no particular reason. It’s just one chance in seven billion. I had no idea who would ultimately receive this power, nor did I know if that person could survive until I summoned them here. You are just an ordinary man, born to ordinary people, but from now on, you will become someone special. This is the mission I’ve imposed on you... Observe the world of humanity’s 999th attempt, and if you think they are also without hope, give them a 1000th chance..." Lin Yan said.

"The 1000th time... you’re asking me... What will happen to me if I do this, and what will happen to the world before the restart?" Chen Ke asked breathlessly.

"It will disappear," Lin Yan said bluntly.

Chen Ke fell silent.

"This is our sacrifice, this is the determination of humanity," Lin Yan said.

"You’re asking me to drag the whole world to its death..." Chen Ke said.

"We... are already dead. You are humanity’s last chance. Pass on the torch of humanity, and let them find a way to kill the divine being, to avenge us!"
