Chapter 454: Chapter 454: Man-made Accident

Chen Ke wanted to speak to Jacob and Jack alone, so he glanced at Nightingale, who understood his intention, softly walked out of the room, and closed the door.

He came up to Jacob, looked at little Jack beside him, and squatted down to ask, "Can I trust you?"

Little Jack nodded, his eyes filled with panic and confusion.

"Jacob’s eyes will be alright, but during this time, the other children will need your care," Chen Ke said.

"I don’t know if I can do it..." little Jack shook his head.

"Chen Ke, things aren’t as bad as you think. I’ve been through everything, this is just a minor issue," Jacob said.

Chen Ke pulled out his wallet from his pocket, took out all the British Pound notes, and stuffed them into little Jack’s hands.

Little Jack looked at the large sum of money in his hand, took a deep breath, having never seen so much money before.

"Are you giving all this to me?" little Jack asked, his voice trembling.

"This isn’t for you... Miss Nightingale will arrange everything. This money is enough to treat Jacob’s eyes," Chen Ke said.

"You don’t need to do this... I haven’t helped you much," Jacob said, reaching out his hand and groping to grab Chen Ke’s wrist.

"I don’t need this money. You know where I come from, and I won’t stay long," Chen Ke said.

Jacob didn’t speak, but he had his own answer in his heart.

"You helped me find these clues about the diamonds, and those children need your eyes. The streets of Langdon also need your vigilance," Chen Ke said.

Little Jack didn’t understand this, but he grasped what Chen Ke was planning next.

"Are you leaving?" little Jack asked.

"I can’t leave just yet... but I’m already getting into the swing of things. You know William, right?" Chen Ke asked.

"The headmaster of Langdon College? I saw him beneath the college... He orchestrated everything," Jacob said.

"Yes, William. I know. Baron Mox and Sir Howard, they also have connections with William," Chen Ke stood up.

The divine blood used by the two lords undoubtedly came from William, possessed power akin to Spiritual Energy, and was definitely not just human blood.

"I want to find him. Do you think he’s still beneath the college?" Chen Ke asked.

"I don’t think so. There was an explosion down there after you guys left... Do you remember what Sean said? The orphanage," Jacob said.

"The orphanage... It’s related to the missing children," Chen Ke remembered.

"The head of the orphanage, who is closely associated with William. Think about it Chen Ke, those children injected with blood beneath the college..." Jacob got a bit excited.

Chen Ke of course didn’t remember, but he still hummed in acknowledgment. After a moment’s thought, he said to Jacob, "I’ll go check out the orphanage."

"Do we need to help?" little Jack asked, looking up.

"No, it’s too dangerous. The further away you are, the better," Chen Ke shook his head.

"Listen to Chen Ke, little Jack. We can’t handle those strange things," Jacob said, having already experienced the ferocity of the Spiritual Monster, which had blinded him without even touching him.

Chen Ke nodded at little Jack then pushed the door open to leave, finding Nightingale standing at the door.

"Nightingale, I hope that doctor... can come quickly," Chen Ke said.

"Don’t worry, I have already sent someone in a carriage to fetch him. Mr. Jacob will get better," Nightingale nodded in response.

"Then, I will take my leave now," Chen Ke slightly bowed and then left the hospital.

Walking the streets, Chen Ke held An Helei’s dirge in his hands; now he felt completely steady. Armed with this armor, the ashes of An Helei could be unleashed without any restraint.

He also had a revolving pistol, combined with Divine Blood Bullets and the Florence suit, his long-range output set was complete.

Only a few Blasphemous Daggers and Moonlight remained. Where could they be? Chen Ke decided to first go to the foundation’s cafe to inquire if there was any available information.

A water tank carriage sped past; the large fire at Howard’s mansion wouldn’t be extinguished so quickly. In the 19th century, such a blaze would definitely be considered a "Century Fire," prominent enough to be featured prominently in the Langdon Daily.

But the direction in which the water tank carriage sped was away from Howard’s mansion; could there be another fire elsewhere?

It wasn’t too hard to understand, considering steam engines ran on coal power and every household also used firewood—it wasn’t unusual for several fires to occur.

"Sir, hey, I need a carriage," Chen Ke hailed an empty carriage on the street.

"Where to, sir?" the coachman asked.

"Sunshine Cafe," Chen Ke answered.

"Climb aboard," the coachman said.

Chen Ke opened the door and sat in the compartment, the coachman pulled on the reins, and the carriage started shaking its way toward the cafe.

About half an hour later, Chen Ke heard the coachman sigh, then suddenly stopped the carriage on the side of the road.

"What’s the matter?" Chen Ke knocked on the window.

"I’m sorry, sir, the cafe you wanted to go to... caught fire," the coachman jumped off his seat and pulled open the door.

Chen Ke got out of the carriage and saw across the street; two water tank carriages were stopped by the roadside, and firefighters carrying buckets ran into the two-story building, scorched black by the fire.

The area around the cafe was filled with people, as usual, in any era, a crowd would gather whenever an incident occurred.

Flames still shot out from the second floor, and local police came to help maintain order, blowing whistles to keep the crowd at a relatively safe distance. A row of stretchers lined the street side, covered with white cloth, indicating the people under them had been burned to death.

"It’s unfortunate, isn’t it? 20 pence, sir," the coachman said.

Chen Ke pulled out a handful of coins, picked a few and handed them to the coachman, then ran toward the cafe.

This place was a secret stronghold of the foundation. Even though the local contact inside wasn’t someone from beyond time, just a local from this era, Chen Ke still couldn’t believe it was merely an accident.

Chen Ke squeezed into the crowd, gradually pushing his way closer.

"It’s said to be a boiler fire, didn’t anyone watch over it while they were heating the water?" Chen Ke overheard firefighters tasked with guarding the water tank carriage talking to each other.

What nonsense... Chen Ke shook his head. The room behind the cafe stored firearms and equipment; most likely, they had also turned to charred remains. Could the ammunition really not have exploded?

"There’s nothing to see here, please everyone move back and be mindful of your personal safety," the constable shouted.

Chen Ke sighed, squeezing out of the crowd. This fire was definitely no accident, but someone cleansing the foundation’s stronghold.

"Now there’s no other leads... Damn it, I’ll have to check the orphanage," Chen Ke muttered to himself, hands shoved in his coat pockets as he quickly walked away from the scene.
