Chapter 446: Chapter 446: The Homecoming Effect

"Chen, wake up."

Chen Ke felt someone calling him, a bit groggy and unable to hear clearly.

"Wake up, quickly."

Chen Ke was deep in sleep, and the shouting was disturbing his sweet dreams.

"Get up, you lazy bum! The teacher is coming to check the rooms!"

With the extraordinarily familiar shouting, Chen Ke felt something being pulled off him, and it was cold as hell.

"Damn... What the hell, I’m dead tired..." Chen Ke grumbled, eyes still closed, reaching out for the blanket.

Suddenly, he realized something, the other person was speaking Mandarin.

Not only that, this familiar feeling, he suddenly opened his eyes and saw the bunk above him.

"You lazy bum, it’s 7 AM, and class is in 30 minutes!" A plump guy with a fair complexion leaned over, looking down at Chen Ke with a sleazy smile on his face.

"I... I... What the..." Chen Ke couldn’t believe his eyes, the plump and fair guy in front of him was his college classmate, Liu Cheng.

"What’s wrong with you? Haven’t seen a handsome guy before? Staring at me?" Liu Cheng said, grinning as if looking at an idiot.

"Liu, damn! Damn!" Chen Ke suddenly sat up, banging his head against the bunk above, but he didn’t care about the pain on his forehead and tightly grabbed Liu Cheng’s arm.

"What year is it... I... I..." Chen Ke was so happy he almost choked up.

He looked around, opposite the bed was a familiar cheap wooden desk, on it lined up six mouthwash cups, eight towels hanging on the basin rack, right beside the dorm room door.

Chen Ke jumped off the bed and looked up at the upper bunk, Lin Xiaobao wasn’t there and the bed next to it was also empty, it seemed everyone had gone out, only Liu was in the room.

A narrow desk was vertically placed between two rows of bunks, on it piled three crappy laptops, with two more taken away, the old, black Lenovo was Chen Ke’s, inside it stored 20G of stuff.

"Have you lost your mind from sleeping? Of course, it’s 2015," Liu Cheng mocked, patting Chen Ke.

Chen Ke wasn’t upset, after everything he had been through, could it be that Heaven was giving him another chance, and he had traveled back again?

In 2015 he was still in university... junior year. In 2016 he graduated, job searching was unsuccessful, he stayed home for half a year, then in January 2017 he joined the company he later worked for, all the way until he traveled to Opportunity City...

He glanced at the upper right corner of his vision, no countdown timer.

He quickly covered his chest with his hands, closed his eyes to feel.

"Thump..."

"Thump..."

"Thump..."

It was a heartbeat!

Chen Ke breathed a sigh of relief, and began to laugh hysterically, pounding on his chest.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!"

Liu Cheng, who had just had a look of watching an idiot, now seemed a bit scared. Chen Ke turned around, hugged Liu tightly, tears of happiness and excitement rolling down his cheeks, he had traveled back, and even a year earlier than before which meant he was three years younger!

Chen Ke, overwhelmed with happiness, yelled aloud:"HAHAHA! F*** Opportunity City! F*** the Foundation! To hell with the Administration Bureau! To hell with the life countdown! HAHAHA! I’m free... It’s so great... I’m back..."

"Chen Ke... you... what are you doing, I’m getting scared... you..."

Liu Cheng dared not touch Chen Ke, he had never seen Chen Ke like this before.

"Hold on... wait a minute..." Chen Ke suddenly remembered something, he closed his eyes, trying to organize his thoughts, then slowly began muttering.

"They are the mediums I need to use for casting magic..." Chen Ke said.

"What are you talking about?" Liu Cheng didn’t understand because Chen Ke was speaking in English.

"Diana... every superhero has a destined villain..." Chen Ke continued muttering.

"When did your English get so good? Aren’t you always taking the Level Four exam?" Liu Cheng asked, astonished.

"Ye! Fuck yes! Believe it, man!" Chen Ke cheered, not only having returned to his college days, but his self-taught English from the United Federation had come with him too.

"Lucina... Lucina..." Chen Ke smiled, wanting to say more, but his heart skipped a beat as he did.

"Oh... you silly girl..." Chen Ke sighed softly. He was back... and he probably would never see them again...

Though his interactions had been brief, totaling less than half a year, Chen Ke, along with the postal service lunatics, Diana, and Wang Ailin, had experienced many adventures and done things he would never have dared to dream of in his life.

"Just a dream, it’s just a dream..." Chen Ke said with his eyes closed, holding Liu Cheng tightly and repeating the words.

"Chen, dude... I need to go to class... let me go..." Liu Cheng, frightened by Chen Ke’s odd reaction, just wanted to escape.

Chen Ke let go of Liu Cheng, gave the salute of the German SS—a joking gesture they used among themselves in the dorm—and said, "Sorry, bro, got a bit carried away... you go ahead."

Liu Cheng glanced at Chen Ke, then scurried off with a troubled heart, leaving Chen Ke alone in the room.

Revisiting this familiar place felt unusually comforting. He tried turning on his associative notebook; the screen lit up after four seconds, displaying the classic Win7.

The wallpaper showed Geralt from the popular 2015 single-player game The Witcher 3, swinging a longsword in a fierce battle with a griffin, and the system tray showed the time as July 22, 2015, 7:09 AM.

He closed the notebook, picked up his used mouthwash cup, and closely examined it, still finding it hard to believe he had traveled back in time. He was dressed in a blue tank top and black boxer shorts, barefoot with a pair of blue flip-flops beside the bed.

Chen Ke couldn’t calm his emotions for a long time. Maybe his journey to Opportunity City was just an illusion, and perhaps even the upcoming three years of drudging through life were an illusion too...

After everything he had been through, even though his life hadn’t completely restarted, at least he had rolled back three years. He wanted to seize this hard-earned chance for repentance.

"Wash my face... go to class, hit on a girl, have barbecue tonight..." He planned out his day, picked up the English dictionary on the table, and flipped through it, amazed that he could understand everything.

"Passing the CET-4 and CET-6 should be a piece of cake! My English is indistinguishable from an American’s now, becoming an English translator after graduation would be better than entering the internet industry," Chen Ke said contentedly.

He tossed aside the English dictionary, looking completely transformed, as if he had already foreseen his future life: Chen the Translator! With his level, he could definitely become a big shot in the translation field. The future looked bright.

He chuckled, shook his head, took a pink towel off the nearby washstand, and walked to the compartment that held the toilet.

Turning on the tap, he first refreshed himself with some cold water. Chen Ke placed the towel on the edge of the wash basin, scooped up some cold water with both hands, rubbed it on his face, breathed out a sigh, and then looked up at the small round mirror.

"......"

The joy he had felt vanished instantly when he saw the face in the mirror.

The face in the mirror was Lin Mo’s...

"No, no, no, no... fuck... fuck..." Chen Ke peered into the mirror, praying it was just his imagination.

But no matter how long he looked, the face remained Lin Mo’s.

He rushed into the dormitory, searching through it, and took out a small mirror from a cabinet to compare. No matter which mirror he used, the reflection showed Lin Mo’s face.

That was when Chen Ke finally noticed his own body; his arms, legs, they weren’t his own but Lin Mo’s.

He lifted his tank top, and underneath were well-defined six-pack abs, one bearing a faint bullet scar.

"Holy shit... I..." Chen Ke realized something. During the time after he traveled, he had always been like this, so he had gotten used to this body, which was why he hadn’t noticed anything unusual just now.

"But Liu Cheng... how could he not recognize it?" Chen Ke suddenly thought.

"You still wanted to come back, you always did, you just didn’t want to admit it." At that moment, behind Chen Ke, his own voice spoke.

Chen Ke turned around and saw himself, wearing a checkered nightgown, sitting on the upper bunk, legs swinging, smiling smugly at him.

"You are not me." Chen Ke stared coldly at his other self.

"Why didn’t you look for a way to go home? Huh? Because you know well, you are not Chen Ke, you are just a puppet whose soul has been occupied by Lin Mo’s thoughts," his other self taunted.

"Get out of my head. I am me, you are just the cowardice I discarded," Chen Ke said through gritted teeth, like an enraged wolf.

"Hehehehehe... hehehehehe..." His other self chuckled, slowly becoming transparent, and then vanished entirely.

The dorm room also gradually lost color, the walls around him cracking slowly like an insect shedding its skin, revealing endless darkness behind the cracks.
