Chapter 405: Chapter 405 [Victoria Plague: His Offspring]
"I know, I saw it too, there are a lot of people down there. I mean, did you see anything else?" Xu Jing asked calmly.
"No... I saw the same thing as you... There are a lot of people down there," Chen Ke replied.
Chen Ke didn’t hide anything. Using his Spiritual Vision, he could see over a hundred meters deep beneath his feet where many human-shaped silhouettes lay.
The number of these people was not small; most of them were lying down, their arrangement indicating the purpose of the space below the academy.
The lower space of the academy was like a sanatorium,
with every eight people encircling and lying within a square space, distributed and arranged in such groups.
These groups formed even larger arrays underground, with alley-like gaps between them, and a few individuals moved back and forth between arrays.
At the edge of the range of the Spiritual Vision, these people’s blue outlines were like blurred shadows, slowly fading and extending in all directions.
Chen Ke and Xu Jing were just standing on the outskirts of the academy, yet they could both see the large-scale shadows below, indicating just how vast it was underneath.
"What do you think they are doing down there?" Chen Ke asked.
They stood at the street corner, watching the carriages go by and the newsboys across the street shouting headlines, while the academy enveloped in red smoke was diagonally opposite, 500 meters away.
"I don’t know, our target is Chen Ke. Eliminate him, and his influence will disappear. If what’s happening below has nothing to do with Chen Ke, then we don’t need to concern ourselves with it," Xu Jing stated.
"You don’t seem very concerned about the abnormality below. To me, the school is filled with red fog," Chen Ke said. Not only that, but the pungent smell of blood was even stronger, as if there was a huge Blood Pool inside the school.
This oddity made Chen Ke somewhat uneasy, but he also didn’t want to complicate matters any further. Xu Jing was right; it was none of their business.
"Every reality has things that must happen, and there will always be people to sort them out. We can’t interfere with everything," Xu Jing said.
"I find it strange. If you all can detect what Chen Ke has done, why don’t you go back in time before he did it and stop him?" Chen Ke asked, puzzled.
"Let me give you a lesson, Chen Ke. Those who perform an inter-bead jump transcend time. Their original position is replaced by someone else in the universe, who also alters the perception of others. I’ve told you this before," Xu Jing explained.
Chen Ke nodded; he remembered. Parker was a case in point. He had performed an inter-bead jump in a daze, arriving half a year before and meeting Chen Ke, creating a time paradox that turned him into Mr. Ash.
As a result, his family in 2009 became strangers, and someone else took his place. Parker was utterly abandoned by time.
"Someone who jumps across beads loses their projection in subjective reality. Their actions become discontinuous. Do you know what that means?" Xu Jing asked.
"It means we can neither see their past nor their future, right?" Chen Ke asked.
"Exactly. We can only observe the effects they have on objective reality, but before they act, we can’t observe; after they act, we can’t interfere," Xu Jing spread his hands.
"So you just get lucky by following the subtle traces left when objective reality is altered?" Chen Ke asked.
"Exactly. Otherwise, what do you think those special agents are for? This time we have you; hopefully, we can resolve him once and for all," Xu Jing said.
"I’ll help you take him down, but remember, I’m not a free gunman," Chen Ke stated as he looked over the bustle of the street with carriages coming and going.
"I know. I’ll get the Administration Bureau of the United Federation to add you to the whitelist and provide you with legitimate documents. That way, you can live the ordinary life you want without anyone caring about your Spiritual Power," Xu Jing said.
Chen Ke nodded slightly; Xu Jing’s job could provide him with benefits in the social hierarchy, granting him an identity to live openly.
The job Lin Yaying had for him would give him a Symbiotic Stone, which could afford him decades of comfortable time. He was tired of pulling triggers for others and didn’t want to venture into dangers like the Great Void anymore.
As Xu Jing said, no matter what happens, an era always finds someone to solve its problems. That person was unlikely to be someone who only knew how to pull a trigger and could only survive in an atmosphere of killing.
"You had better keep your word..." Chen Ke glanced at Xu Jing.
Xu Jing lowered her head with a smile and said, "The Foundation has always kept its promises."
"Good, so what do we do now?" Chen Ke asked.
"Of course, we need to find a way to go down and see, although this doesn’t seem like something Chen Ke would do..." Xu Jing said.
"Not like it... You never quite told me directly, what has that Chen Ke done? What is his purpose?" Chen Ke curiously asked.
In his mind, the purpose of such people was nothing more than power and authority, yet as a member of the Clan, he had already acquired what seemed to be the pinnacle of power, so what remained could only be authority.
"He will bring about a transformation in the world, one which the Foundation does not wish to see. Listen, when we really come face to face with him, just act, don’t listen to a word he says," Xu Jing earnestly said.
"Your expression scared me... If he’s just going to bring change to the world, there have been many of those throughout history. Human progress relies on leaders like that," Chen Ke asked, puzzled.
"The world he seeks is one of chaos and disorder, but he calls it freedom and fairness. The Foundation has witnessed that reality; trust me, we cannot let him succeed," Xu Jing said.
"You speak as if he is bound to succeed if no one stops him... Hahaha," Chen Ke laughed.
"No joke, he definitely will succeed," Xu Jing said, seemingly not finding the matter amusing.
"How does he do it? Through memetic infection?" Chen Ke couldn’t help asking.
"No, it’s the power of language, seducing people with truths to make the worst choices, what they call faith," Xu Jing said.
"Sounds indeed dangerous," Chen Ke said, noncommittally, aware that spreading faith and brainwashing could sometimes be the same.
"Do you have any good ideas on how we can get underneath the Academy?" Xu Jing asked; she appeared to be more anxious than Chen Ke.
"I have a silencer on my pistol... You know, just walk in a bit, a couple of shots, and then I can escort him in..." Chen Ke’s plan was simple and direct. There were no such convenient weapons during the Victorian Era; no one would notice.
"No, no, no... You can’t do that," a third person’s voice came from behind Chen Ke and Xu Jing.
They turned their heads and saw a young man in his twenties. He wore a patched trench coat and a battered top hat, with thick eyebrows, big eyes, and a cut on his chin that left a bald patch in his beard.
"How long have you been behind us?" Chen Ke asked, surprised.
"For quite a while; you’ve been talking about things I don’t understand, the Foundation, the inter-bead jump, faith, and whatnot," the man said, looking as if he had seen much.
"You should know it’s not a good habit to eavesdrop on others’ conversations, right?" Xu Jing was also quite surprised.
This person was standing less than half a meter behind them, and neither Chen Ke nor Xu Jing had noticed him.
"But you’re definitely not from the Academy, right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t be standing here debating on how to get in," the man said with a smile.
"Our business is none of your concern..." Chen Ke said.
"Chen Ke... is your silencer ready?" Xu Jing, on the other hand, was more decisive, ready to silence the witness.
"Wait... hold on... Let me get straight to the point. You want to get into the Academy, right? I have a way in..." the man hurriedly said.
"How do I know you’re not lying to us?" Xu Jing crossed her arms and appraised the man from head to toe.
"Because I’ve been in there. Hehe," the man said, spreading his hands with a smile.
Beneath his trench coat, Chen Ke noticed several throwing knives and a revolver.
"Do you know what’s down there?" Chen Ke asked.
"Help is mutual, friend. Before we cooperate, why don’t we introduce ourselves first?" The man smiled and asked.
"I’m Lin, and she is my partner, Jing. Who are you?" Chen Ke said.
"My name is Jacob," said Jacob, tipping his hat as he introduced himself.
