Chapter 392: Chapter 392 [Spiritual Energy Subplot: Dreams, Death, The Ad Girl] Completed
When Chen Ke placed his palm on the ground, a thin film spread over it. With a thought from Chen Ke, the film quickly expanded, slowly covering the world.
With his current ability, he couldn’t possibly stop time over such a large area. However, the world was judged by his time countdown to be the size of a photograph, thus the entire street was brought to a complete standstill.
The flow of cars and the crowd were frozen in the actions of the second before, even the neon lights on the advertisements of the street-side shops had stopped flashing.
It was like a collective pantomime; although he knew it was all fake, Chen Ke still felt a little shocked.
This feeling was truly too wondrous. Everyone else was fixed in place, yet he could still move freely, as if he had been abandoned by time. That feeling was somewhat similar to Quicksilver from the movies.
In fact, if you could stop the other party’s time, you would seem "fast" in their perception, the epitome of speed.
Because humans experience time continuously, they cannot perceive what happens after time has stopped.
"Ms. Harlowin, next..." Chen Ke looked toward Harlowin beside him, only to see she still maintained her pose of looking down at the ground.
Sigh... Harlowin was also a part of this photograph, she had been paused again.
Chen Ke had no choice but to act alone, wandering among the crowd, searching for those assassins.
He had figured finding the assassins would be a difficult task, but it turned out to be simpler than he had anticipated.
Because the assassins were by default able to directly sense Harlowin’s location, their direction of movement, and the intention revealed in their expressions, were completely different from the rest of the background people.
After searching through at least more than 200 individuals, Chen Ke finally pulled a negative from one of them.
He had found it. This small negative could serve as a bridge to the next world.
He glanced at Harlowin, hesitating whether to take her to the next world as well.
Time resumption concluded, and the entire world returned to its previous state. Harlowin looked baffled at the empty ground, remembering that Chen Ke used to squat there.
"I found it." Chen Ke patted Harlowin from behind.
"Ah!? What happened?" Harlowin wondered.
"That’s not the point. The important thing is, I found it, and they were very close to you," Chen Ke said, shaking the negative in front of Harlowin.
"Why didn’t you kill them?" Harlowin asked.
"Killing them would only trigger a restart; it would just be a waste of time. Are you ready to enter the next world?" asked Chen Ke.
"I..." Harlowin was a bit apprehensive. For what reason?
"Hold onto this, I’ll follow you," Chen Ke said, handing over the negative.
Harlowin took the negative, but nothing happened.
"Hmm... so clones and possessors can’t transfer through a negative?" Chen Ke looked at Harlowin, muttering to himself.
"It won’t work... I can’t leave through this..." Harlowin also realized.
Chen Ke sighed. Since it was this way, he felt relieved. It seemed that things which inherently existed within the photograph were not so easily able to leave.
"Only the holder of the camera can take me away... Agent, what’s your name?" Harlowin asked.
"Just call me Chen Ke," he replied.
"Chen Ke, promise me... find Felipe, and get the camera. You’re my only hope," Harlowin said, looking at Chen Ke.
Chen Ke looked at the asphalt road and then at Harlowin’s purple evening gown.
He was there to kill her.
"I will, Ms. Harlowin," Chen Ke said.
Chen Ke, clutching the negative, was suddenly sucked into it. The negative gently floated down to the ground.
Harlowin picked it up, her eyes filled with hope. She turned around to see six assassins standing in front of her.
Chen Ke stepped onto a cubic floating bridge, making his third leap through the world of the negative, and dived into the slit of light before him.
Whoosh!
His feet touched the ground, and he found himself in an office.
Wasn’t this the office where he first entered the world of the photograph? Had he come out just like that?
Chen Ke pulled out his gun and looked around. He noticed something, moved closer to the window, and peered outside.
The nightscape was enchanting, but everything was so lifeless; silver light sprinkled from the sky, yet there was no moon. Downstairs, all was quiet, everything so peaceful.
No... Chen Ke still felt something was off; he didn’t believe he had truly come out of the photograph.
He walked tightly towards the door, and that’s when he noticed a woman’s foot stretched out from under the other side of the boss’s desk.
Chen Ke circled around and saw a woman’s corpse sprawled on the side of the desk, her back riddled with six bullet holes, blood having dyed her gray business suit black.
That distinctive white long hair immediately told him it was Harlowin.
He crouched down and flipped the body over, noting Harlowin’s face marred with contusions. Her front clothes were brutally torn open, her body covered with cuts and stab wounds, her abdomen bruised and purplish, her chest bore whip marks.
Clearly, Ms. Harlowin had suffered cruel torture before her death.
"This isn’t... It can’t be real." Chen Ke activated his Spiritual Vision with a glance. This Harlowin was a duplicate.
This obviously was the photograph world, so this photo... was actually taken in the boss’s office...
Chen Ke searched through her pockets but found no negatives. He stood up and approached the door, only to be blocked by a wall of air.
He ran to the window; again, an air wall. Circling this palm-sized office, he realized he was trapped in a sealed environment, with no way out.
"Trapped?" Chen Ke was startled.
But at the same time, he noticed some subtle differences. There was no advertisement painting hanging on the walls of this office.
He began to carefully observe, aiming to spot more differences between this place and the real-world office. Finally, his gaze landed on the small photo frame on the desk.
There shouldn’t have been this thing before, should there? He picked up the small photo frame, and inside was a photo of a table with a Polaroid camera on it.
Chen Ke removed the photo from the frame and touched the front of the photo.
Whoosh!
Chen Ke was once again sucked into the photo, but this time, he didn’t fall into the world of negatives; instead, he landed in a room.
In the sweltering air, there was a foul smell, and in front of him, the small table was empty.
"How’s it going... huh?" A familiar voice sounded from behind.
Chen Ke immediately turned around to see a white man in a blue shirt eyeing him nervously.
Chen Ke raised his gun, pointing it at the man, and asked, "Are you... Felipe?"
"I... Yes, that’s me," the man stuttered, a camera in his hands.
"What did you mean by what you just said? What ’how’s it going?’" Chen Ke asked.
"I... I meant... you saw the body just now, didn’t you?" Felipe stammered.
"Right. Did you do that?" Chen Ke asked.
"No, no... It was Anderson, Ande... Anderson. I was just responsible for taking pictures," Felipe said nervously.
"Harlowin’s husband...?" Chen Ke muttered to himself.
"Her bleeding... so captivating... right?" Felipe smiled.
Chen Ke shook the gun slightly and said, "Give me the camera."
"No... no... You want to let her out?" Felipe asked.
Chen Ke stepped forward, and Felipe immediately stepped back, hugging the camera, and threatened, "Don’t come any closer! If you... if you get any closer... I’ll expose the roll of film!"
Exposing the roll would expose it to light, potentially destroying all the photograph worlds.
"Anderson... was amusing himself with his wife? In this... way?" Chen Ke asked.
"Yes... that’s right... it was all his idea, I... I only..." Anderson said.
"I understand," Chen Ke responded.
"We’ll... I... will give you money... as a... a hush payment..." Felipe offered.
He had only gotten halfway through his sentence when Chen Ke pulled the trigger, and a bullet shot out, boring a hole into Felipe’s forehead.
Felipe’s head jerked back, and he stumbled a few steps before hitting the wall and rolling onto the ground.
"Scum..." Chen Ke murmured to himself as he picked up the camera from the ground.
