Chapter 378: Dead Loop

Chapter 378: Chapter 378: Dead Loop

Chen Ke didn’t bother rummaging through the other body bags, because, if nothing was amiss, they all surely contained Harlowin’s corpses in various states of death.

Just for a moment, he seemed to have an epiphany.

"Agent Wildflower"... starring Harlowin Mestera, could this be a movie she had acted in before her death?

But by coincidence, Chen Ke had seen this film, although at the time, he hadn’t thought much of it.

In his world, it was a foreign film released in 1997, telling the story of a female teacher who, after a car accident, recovered her memory and returned to her special agent duties to retaliate against arms dealers.

Of course, the lead actress wasn’t Harlowin, but another blonde from across the ocean.

However, in this film strip, Chen Ke wasn’t sure if the scenes and story had changed significantly; the years were long past, and he could only remember the general plot.

He climbed out of the pit, patted off the dust from his pant legs, and crawled through the already cut hole.

Logically speaking, the amount of information a film strip can carry is extremely limited; it can only capture a single moment.

But here, everything was flowing, and seeing so many of Harlowin’s corpses led Chen Ke to speculate that this place was continuously looping.

Harlowin’s character, the female special agent who infiltrated the warehouse, could not escape death no matter what she was trying to find. It’s just that each time her death differed from the last.

"Bang bang bang!"

Sharp gunfire came from a warehouse, sounding like small-caliber handguns, similar to a Makarov.

It was followed by more sounds of automatic rifles firing back; the disparity in firepower was obvious just from the noise.

He activated his Spiritual Vision, scanning over the rows of warehouses, but he saw nothing.

This wasn’t the first time Spiritual Vision had failed, and Chen Ke was slowly understanding the limitations of this Skill.

It was not only limited to human forms, but it could only detect what truly existed; things like Spiritual Body entities or imaginings could not be seen by Spiritual Vision.

Simply put, only those objects that actually existed could be seen with Spiritual Vision.

The film world was a frozen moment in time, where the objective reality was the photograph and not the people and things within it; hence, Spiritual Vision was useless in the world of film, just as it was with the products of imagination on Conrad’s ship.

The gunfire quickly died down, and a warehouse door slowly opened a crack, from which two men emerged, carrying a body that had been riddled with bullets.

Chen Ke looked left and right and immediately crouched down behind a mud slope, barely hiding half of his body.

He observed the two men for a moment; they were wearing black windbreakers and cargo pants, Caucasian, with stock-less AK47s slung on their backs, and they probably weren’t wearing bulletproof vests, at least not that Chen Ke could tell from this distance.

They had gun holsters strapped to their legs, with pistols of an indistinct model inside, looking neither like military personnel nor as professional as PMC security companies, at best they might be armed smugglers.

The dead body they had shot was Harlowin, her head drooping, her white hair very noticeable, the front torn into a sieve by bullets, full of blood holes.

One of the men was carrying a body bag; they dragged Harlowin to the wire fence, then shoved her into the bag.

There was electricity running through the wire fence, and the gate wasn’t on this side. Chen Ke had thought they would take a long detour to throw Harlowin’s body into the pit, but a bizarre scene unfolded.

The two men vanished in a blink, as if they had never been there.

Subsequently, the body bag also vanished into thin air. Chen Ke was astounded, only to discover that the body bag had suddenly appeared above the pit, and then thumped down into it.

"What the... Fuck..." Chen Ke touched the back of his head and suddenly felt that everything was simply unbelievable.

He stood up, dusted off his clothes, walked over to where the two men had been, looked around, and found that the little hole he had crawled through had also vanished without a trace.

"The world... refreshed?" Chen Ke suddenly thought.

Just like in a video game... when the protagonist dies, the game loads from a save point, and begins anew... everything prior is wiped by the system, except for Harlowin’s body, which remained.

Judging from the number of corpses in the pit, this world hadn’t been restarted many times. The photograph must have been taken not long before.

Then, he heard the familiar melody of a violin and, looking up, saw the 3D title effects of a movie floating in the air.

"Spy Flower Frenzy"

Director: John Smith

Starring: Harlowin Mestera

Cinematographer: Anthony Price

Producer: Lorin Scott

Just like when Chen Ke had first arrived, the world had indeed reset... The enemies never end, Harlowin’s body remains after death, but the traces of the world are erased, making it somewhat resemble the Great Void...

"Are you my partner?"

Suddenly, a woman’s voice emerged, startling Chen Ke. He quickly turned and saw Harlowin standing outside the wire fence, carrying a tool bag.

"Ms... Ms. Harlowin..." Chen Ke said in surprise.

Dressed in a black trench coat, her short white hair fluttering in the wind, her face adorned with smoky makeup, and complemented by her signature smile, she was especially beautiful and charming in the night.

"If you don’t mind, help me get in," Harlowin said, tossing the tool bag from her shoulder over the fence, which Chen Ke caught instinctively.

"What is this... for?" Chen Ke asked.

"Mission number 137, rookie. That vitally important puzzle piece is hidden inside. And our job is to get it," Harlowin said, hands on hips, standing outside the wire fence.

This Harlowin, compared to the one he had seen in the cabin, her demeanor and voice were very different. She was more forceful, her voice deeper, but she hadn’t lost that innate allure.

"Are you planning to stand there and watch me all night?" Harlowin asked with a laugh, striking a pose.

"Oh... Right..." Chen Ke quickly set down the tool bag, unzipped it, revealing insulated gloves, pliers, and various tools inside.

Chen Ke had never used these items, but under Harlowin’s guidance, he still managed to make a big hole in the electric fence.

Harlowin climbed through, dusted herself off, then took out a pair of binoculars and looked towards the rows of warehouses.

Chen Ke didn’t know whether he should tell her that he had already died many times. But unexpectedly, Harlowin herself brought up the subject.

"Listen, rookie, we’re looking for a black safe. It appears randomly in one of these warehouses each time. When we pick a warehouse to go into, if we don’t see the safe, we start over," Harlowin said.

"Every time... Have you tried many times, Ms. Harlowin?" Chen Ke asked.

"I’ve tried hundreds of times. There’s a pit over there, filled with my bodies. I think you must have seen it already," Harlowin spoke without any particular expression as she mentioned this.
