Chapter 333: Chapter 333 0451
The atmosphere suddenly became tense.
Although the man in the suit was still smiling, it was clear he needed to talk to Chen Ke alone, and Chen Ke could see a hint of danger in his eyes.
Could it be about the subway incident? How long had it been? Had Diana turned herself in? Chen Ke’s thoughts were in turmoil.
"We are together, and if you detain him, we will stay as well," Laura said at that moment.
"Then you’d better get off, I’m already running late," complained the truck driver.
"You don’t need to do this..." Chen Ke glanced at Laura and Nathan.
"Come on, Mr. Chen, we just want to confirm a few things," said the man in the suit.
At that moment, one of his colleagues ran over and whispered something in his ear.
The man in the suit’s expression changed slightly, and he walked away with his colleague to talk.
"What are they up to...? If I may ask, you’re not involved with any shady business, right?" the truck driver asked quietly.
Laura shook her head and pulled out an ID card from her bag, showing her credentials as a university lecturer.
"Oh, that puts me at ease. It looks like there definitely has been some mix-up recently. The Administration Bureau always acts so suspicious," the truck driver commented.
After a while, the man in the suit came back with a smile and said, "I apologize, Mr. Chen. It seems there was a misunderstanding... Uh, you can go now."
Chen Ke looked at the man in the suit, puzzled, but didn’t want to delve too deep. If the Administration Bureau really wanted to trouble him, they had many reasons, but unless Diana had revealed his whereabouts, they shouldn’t even know what he looked like.
"Have a pleasant journey," the man in the suit said as he handed Chen Ke his driver’s license back and then slammed the car door shut.
A P.W.A.T team member then moved the roadblock aside, and the truck driver started the truck and continued toward Norton City.
Chen Ke had always avoided conflicts with the Administration Bureau, for, as a governmental institution, provoking them could make life very difficult in this world, and he had no intention of living in perpetual conflict and darkness.
However, this sudden interception alerted him.
On one hand, he was worried about whether the Administration Bureau knew of his past actions.
On the other hand, he began to suspect Diana who knew he had Spiritual Power and was familiar with his appearance—she was the only one in the Administration Bureau who did.
But Chen Ke was reluctant to suspect Diana; she was an honest and straightforward person, not one to lie or play underhanded tricks.
If Diana really wanted to capture him, why would she deviously lure him to Norton City, then go through the trouble of setting up roadblocks on a long journey?
The truck continued on the interstate highway, passing vast farmlands and wilderness; blue harvesters worked the fields, and tumbleweeds were blown away into the distance by the hot wind.
As they ventured deeper inland, the scenery on both sides grew increasingly prosperous. Continuing for several kilometers along a river that served as an outlet to the sea, the surrounding buildings gradually became denser.
"This here is the Manhattan District of Norton City—if you want to find an inn, there are many nearby," the truck driver explained.
It was awkward for the trio to continue the ride, so they asked the truck driver to stop at a gas station on the outskirts of Manhattan to let them off.
Out of gratitude, Laura tried to pay the driver 100 union coins for the ride, but he refused.
"Let’s part ways here; we certainly each have our own matters to attend to," Nathan said.
Standing at the intersection, the three said their final farewells before embarking on their separate ways. Watching the two leave, Chen Ke felt a sudden pang of envy.
Laura was chasing the ancient secrets of humanity, while Nathan was after treasure—what was he chasing after?
Was it merely to prolong his life that he exhausted himself? Chen Ke wasn’t sure. It wasn’t he who chose this path, but fate that found him.
As the capital of the United Federation, Norton City was far more bustling than the depressed Opportunity City, even just in the Manhattan suburbs, its commercial facilities and foot traffic far surpassed Raffi Road in Opportunity City, and Chen Ke noticed that those black box buildings were much less common in this city.
Of course, Chen Ke was not here for sightseeing.
He quickly took out his cell phone and discovered it had only 12% battery left. He had barely ever charged it since it had been in his possession... Occasionally plugging it in for just a half-hour before pulling it out.
Since he had traveled to this world and become an emotionless assassin, Chen Ke found he didn’t even have time to lay in bed playing with his phone anymore, his only pleasure now was pulling the trigger...
Chen Ke found a coffee shop, pushed the door open, ordered a latte, then picked a corner seat to sit down, and borrowed a charging cable from the waiter, plugging it into a charging port on the corner to begin charging.
"Beep... Beep..."
He dialed a number while he stirred the white froth on his latte into a sloppy mess with a spoon.
"Pick up the phone, Wang Ailin..." Chen Ke was somewhat anxious. When he had called two days ago, the situation on Wang Ailin’s end had been very odd, and he was greatly worried that something had happened to her.
"Hello...who is this?" A voice of an Asian woman came through.
"Wang Ailin... are you at home?" Chen Ke asked.
"I... Who are you?" the woman asked.
"I’m... Chen Ke... Haven’t you saved my number?" Chen Ke wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
"Oh! Oh! It’s Chen Ke... I was too rushed that day, didn’t save it... Did you decide to come to Norton City to find me?" Wang Ailin asked.
"Actually, I’m in Manhattan right now... Right, you’re from Fei Huang too... Let’s speak in Fei Huang language..." Chen Ke said.
"You’re here?! Now! Good... very good... But I don’t reside in the Manhattan District, I live in the Queen District, and I’m not at home right now," Wang Ailin said.
"Ah... That’s unfortunate, does this mean I need to wait for you to get off work?" Chen Ke asked.
"Of course not! And you don’t need to go to my house, just come directly to the Spiritual Ability Research Institute," Wang Ailin suggested.
"Spiritual Ability Research Institute, okay, I’ll find my own way there, but I feel like such places probably don’t just let anyone in, right?" Chen Ke asked.
"Of course, but I can send an invitation. As long as you have an internal invitation, you can get in. Just enter my number at the visitor center when you get there," Wang Ailin said.
"Alright, see you in a bit then," Chen Ke said.
"Mhm, oh... Chen Ke, have you had any strange sensations these last few days? Like hallucinations... nosebleeds... something like that?" Wang Ailin suddenly asked.
Chen Ke was silent for a while.
He indeed had.
"Why are you asking this?" Chen Ke countered.
"Nothing, I’ll tell you when you get here. Gotta hang up now," Wang Ailin said.
"Wait a minute!" Chen Ke suddenly shouted, causing other customers in the coffee shop to look at him in surprise.
"What?" Wang Ailin asked.
"You haven’t yet told me your... your number for the institute," Chen Ke said.
"Aw! Aw! Hang on... See, I almost forgot, my number is 0451. Remember that, okay?" Wang Ailin said.
"Got it, bye," Chen Ke said.
After hanging up the phone, he noted down the four digits, 0451, in the memo of his cell phone.
"Hmm... why does this number feel so familiar..." Chen Ke mumbled to himself, feeling as though he had seen it somewhere before.
