Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Fabricated Past

Chen Ke got into the car and found that it had already been refueled.

Lucina’s car was a 1983 Dodge Challenger, a very old model but clearly modified for street racing with overwhelming horsepower and wild temperament; stepping on the gas without firm hands on the steering wheel might make the car spin out.

Driving from Hainerd’s fish goods factory to the gun shop took only half an hour. Heading toward the Gun Tie District along the coastal road, he passed through a grove.

That was where he had once fought with a Wuan Consortium assassin and where he had resurrected on the spot for the first time.

Continuing forward, entering the desolate streets of the Gun Tie District, he saw the remains of the West Gold Building had been demolished, leaving just an empty lot.

That lot might never be built upon again, and with the ruins gone, Spirit Explosion Space couldn’t regenerate here—what would become of it, Chen Ke didn’t know for now.

The car stopped in front of the gun shop, whose main door was open, but Pi’s red truck was parked out front, loaded with boxes.

Chen Ke pushed the door open and saw Pi packing bullets into cardboard boxes.

"Pi," Chen Ke greeted.

Hearing Chen Ke’s voice, Pi stopped what he was doing and looked at him.

"Looks like you’re getting ready to move," Chen Ke remarked, pointing at the boxes piled on the floor.

"Just tidying up a bit; I’m not moving out immediately. After all, setting up a safe house isn’t easy..." Pi said.

He paused, gestured with his hand, and then asked, "Tell me about your buyer, Chen Ke. How did you come to know someone from the Spiritual Ability Research Institute?"

Chen Ke walked to the gun cabinet and leaned on its edge, saying, "People from the institute are very interested in these oddities. I have connections. Trust me, there won’t be issues."

"I’m not doubting you, Chen Ke, but since they are from the institute, you better ensure this person is completely reliable," Pi said.

"If there’s an issue, I’ll handle it, but first I need to meet up with her," Chen Ke replied.

"Hmm... You haven’t been with us long, but I feel more at ease letting you handle this than having Hall and the others take it," Pi said gravely. "When are you meeting this person?"

"She’s in Norton City; I might leave today. If all goes well, I should be back in a day or two. Hainerd is arranging the shipment for me; I need a holster and some spare ammunition for the Type 67 pistol," Chen Ke spread his hands.

"I can help you with those things; after all, this is a gun shop... though it’s closed now," Pi said with a smile.

After helping Chen Ke with a new holster and four spare magazines, Chen Ke helped carry some boxes to the truck outside; the pickup was quickly filled, but it was just a small part of what the gun shop had to offer.

Moving everything with a pickup was impractical. Pi told Chen Ke that he had a place at Bain’s where he could temporarily store some ammunition and equipment and that with the deteriorating economic situation in Opportunity City, perhaps after the Holy Diamond was sold, they might consider moving.

Chen Ke didn’t express an opinion. Previously, Pi had been eager about several robbery opportunities, but now he was already thinking of leaving.

Pi was waiting for Priskin to arrive at the gun shop, and then he would drive with him to Raffi Road. Chen Ke was also waiting for a call from Hainerd, so the two chatted at the counter, killing time.

"This place is becoming more and more odd; I can feel it. I used to smell money in the air, but recently all I smell is gunpowder," Pi sighed and offered a cigarette packet to Chen Ke.

"I don’t smoke... Pi, I’ve noticed it too—there are some new folks stirring things up here," Chen Ke sighed.

It wasn’t a few foreign companies but a new power stepping into the upper echelons of the federal Spiritual Power Industry.

This wasn’t just business; even the Wuan Consortium behind Li Moyang might not represent this power.

Divine Descent Sect... Li Moyang had once said this to him in Chinese in private, clearly to prevent others in the car from understanding.

"Chen Ke, ever since you arrived, many strange things have happened here. I can’t tell if strange events are attracting you, or if you’re attracting them. Of course... I’m not blaming you, but these last two months, my little group has experienced more anomalies than we’ve seen in over a decade," Pi said as he lit a cigarette.

Before Chen Ke’s arrival, their couriers seldom slipped up and rarely exposed themselves to enemies; they operated swiftly and discreetly, always within what the major conglomerates could tolerate.

After Chen Ke showed up, Yasla came knocking, although it actually had more to do with Hainerd.

"Everyone gets their shoes wet sooner or later; just find a dry spot is all," Chen Ke said.

"Hmm... I’ve always been curious, Chen Ke. Hainerd told me not to ask you, but I can’t help my curiosity. How do you use Spiritual Energy?" Pi queried with confusion.

"I don’t have Spiritual Energy," Chen Ke shook his head and laughed.

"It’s just us here, Chen Ke. Of course, it’s okay if you don’t want to tell me, but at least I know you’re on our side... Still, I don’t think you need to hide anything from us," Pi said.

"What did Hainerd say?" Chen Ke countered.

"He suspects you are a Spiritual Cultivator from the Fei Huang Republic. Cultivators have abilities similar to Spiritual Ability Users but weaker because they lack the spiritual element in their spine; they utilize Spiritual Energy in a different way, not so easy to learn and maintaining it takes shorter periods... plus you need a good rest after using it once... it’s a convenient but impractical way of using Spiritual Energy," Pi explained.

"Oh... he figured it out," Chen Ke went along with the flow.

"You really are? You must have a complicated background. I haven’t visited the Fei Huang Republic, but Hainerd dealt with people there when he smuggled Holy Relics; Cultivation is illegal there too, much like our situation," Pi stroked his beard as if understanding something.

"Think what you will, Pi, my hands aren’t clean, and I came here just to evade my enemies. Plus, I’ve tried to handle any trailing issues myself, you know that," Chen Ke made up.

"I know, you’ve been quite busy; it seems they’ve clenched on tight..." Pi nodded, expressing understanding.

The two continued to talk, discussing Lucina and Hainerd, their past courier jobs, and even touched on the glory days of Opportunity City 50 years ago.
