Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Glimpse into the Future

Lucina was also a bit surprised by Chen Ke’s drinking capacity. She curiously watched the growing number of empty bottles on his side, wondering if her eyes were deceiving her.

Another clatter sounded as the bartender kicked the emptied crate of liquor to the side.

"Ugh...ugh..." The bald Anchorman leaned on the bar, squinting and sticking out his tongue. His entire body was flushed red. After downing more than thirty bottles of cheap booze, he was on the verge of collapse and in dire need of the restroom.

"Don’t you think you should go take a leak?" Lucina asked.

"I think you should be asking him." Chen Ke set down his bottle, now having accumulated over forty empty ones on his side.

"Oh...oh...my God..." Saint John leaned against the side of the bar, already somewhat out of it, clutching a bottle that was still half full.

Several baldies behind Chen Ke hurried over to support him but were shoved away by Saint John. He got up from the ground and pointed at one of the bald men, "Pretty boy! Keep going, I haven’t fallen yet!"

"Um...over there, Saint John. You’ve had too much to drink, time to head back." The bald man, a little embarrassed for Saint John, grabbed his hand and slung it over his neck.

"Looks like I’ve won, Saint John." Chen Ke smiled, lifting his bottle.

"You won...pretty boy, you’ve won..." Saint John began before he bent over and vomited everything in his stomach onto the floor.

"Damn it, Saint John! Can’t you go outside to throw up?!" The bartender slapped the bar, visibly annoyed.

"Hahahahaha!!"

Saint John’s companions carried him out of the bar amidst laughter, while the other patrons raised their glasses to Chen Ke in salute.

"In this mysterious world, here’s to us, the ordinary ones." Chen Ke lifted his bottle.

Lucina also picked up a bottle and made a toasting gesture toward Chen Ke.

"Hahaha! Here’s to us!" Everyone raised their glasses, filling the bar with a jovial atmosphere.

"Chen Ke...you must have a remarkable pair of kidneys...and a large capacity for... *burp*..." Lucina said, her face flushed with red.

"You’re drunk, Lucina." Chen Ke put down his bottle.

"No, I’m not. I can still down a few dozen more, care to test me?" Lucina boasted, lifting her chin.

Chen Ke looked toward the bartender...

...

...

"Ugh...ugh..."

"Ugh...uhn..."

Outside the bar, Lucina lay by the pier, emptying everything from her stomach into the sea.

"Are you done throwing up? I think it’s time we left." Chen Ke supported Lucina, squatting beside her.

"I can still...I...oh..." Lucina said groggily.

"No, you can’t...you’re like a 60-degree heated inflatable doll right now." Chen Ke shook his head.

"I...I..." Lucina slurred, collapsing into Chen Ke’s arms, her eyes shut, and she passed out.

He simply picked up Lucina, carrying her like a corpse to her red muscle car, and stuffed her into the passenger seat.

Though it’s commonly said one should not drink and drive, Chen Ke’s current state was almost indistinguishable from being drunk, so he cared little for such warnings. He slid into the driver’s seat, inserted the key, pressed the accelerator, and drove all the way back to Hainerd’s fishing goods factory.

Hainerd was not in the safe house beneath the factory, he was probably still at the gun shop, discussing something with Pihom. Chen Ke threw Lucina onto the bed, covering her with a thin blanket, then took out his cellphone to check the time.

It was 20 minutes to 9 PM.

He sat by the bed, where Lucina lay with her eyes shut, her chest rising and falling gently with even breaths, her skin turning a shade of red from the alcohol.

He opened the dialing screen; Wang Ailin’s phone number was still there. He had meant to call her earlier in the day.

Now it was almost 9 o’clock, would calling be too presumptuous? Chen Ke and Wang Ailin were barely acquainted, and Diana hadn’t introduced them beforehand, so a sudden contact might seem rash.

After some thought, he decided to put the phone down, unsure what he would even say at this point. That’s when Lucina grabbed his right wrist. He turned to look, and she had her eyes firmly closed, but it was apparent she was feigning sleep.

Chen Ke knew what Lucina wanted.

The corners of Lucina’s mouth turned upwards slightly as she pulled Chen Ke toward her. He propped himself up with his left hand on the bed, half-leaning over Lucina’s side, looking down at her profile.

"Tell me, what do I look like in your dreams?" Chen Ke asked.

"Come from the front, Chen Ke, from the front," Lucina murmured.

Chen Ke tossed the phone aside, grasped Lucina’s right wrist in his, and pressed it down beside her head. Lucina was like a pool of 95-octane gasoline, requiring only the smallest spark to set her ablaze.

Chen Ke felt a surge of heat throughout his body, and the Sun Mark began to spin wildly—he felt like a wolf crouched atop a doe, poised to devour his prey completely.

At that moment, a drop of blood fell onto Lucina’s cheek.

Lucina opened one eye, her expression shifting from surprise to astonishment, then to a profound smile.

Chen Ke covered his nose, stunned for a few seconds, then flipped over to sit at the head of the bed, tilting his head back.

"I’ll take that as a compliment," Lucina said with a chuckle, looking down.

She pulled a tissue from the box at the head of the bed, sat beside Chen Ke, and attempted to wipe away the blood, but Chen Ke ignored her, staring blankly at the floor, blood dripping from between his fingers onto his collar.

This nosebleed wasn’t the kind Lucina was imagining. Chen Ke’s head spun, his vision as if covered by a fish-eye filter, the entire world curling into itself.

He suddenly felt nauseous, as if his surroundings were unreal, gradually blurring, and after a few seconds, all surrounding sounds vanished, plunging him into darkness. However, he could still feel Lucina shaking him.

With Chen Ke’s current condition, even the intoxicated Lucina should have been sobered by fear.

"Chen Ke? Chen Ke?" Lucina shook Chen Ke, and he collapsed into her arms, limp as if all strength had left him.

Meanwhile, Chen Ke found himself in a different dimension; his head throbbing, something seemed to have grown inside his chest, pulsating rhythmically with a dull thud, like a pulse, like a heartbeat.

"I’m supposed to be heartless... how can this be?" Chen Ke couldn’t feel his limbs, as if he were a ghost floating in the dark void.

A soft light appeared from afar; a sun emerged from the darkness.

A blue sun.

He felt the direction of the sun and soared towards it, like a moth to a flame.

Within seconds, the sun erupted with intense white light, followed by an explosion. Chen Ke’s vision was filled with endless daylight, everything bathed in a blinding whiteness.

He could feel his limbs again and realized he was standing on the ground, a gun in his left hand. Then, cries of combat reached his ears, the world as bright as day slowly manifesting tangible images from the center of his vision.

It was a scorched land, the soil black, the sky the color of dusk, strange shapes flying through the air, the horizon densely packed with indescribable evil creatures.

Chen Ke heard deafening blasts of aerial bombardment, looking up to see massive warships firing into the depths of the clouds while behind him lay an indescribable multitude of legions.
