Chapter 260: Chapter 260: Shattered Space-Time
The white dragon fluttered its wings, continually shaking off gray-white ash from its body, leaving a long trail of gray in the sky.
It soared into the sky, folding its wings, and its massive body slowly ceased its ascent. Then, its head and tail reversed direction, diving toward the decayed town below.
Just as Chen Ke thought it would crash onto the streets, the white dragon abruptly spread its wings again, tracing an elegant arc in the air, gliding around to the back of the huge main city, leaving behind only echoes of its roars in this silent kingdom.
Chen Ke lay at the edge of the broken bridge, gazing down at the town below, trying to establish a mental concept of the geographical layout.
The church was built into the mountain, but unlike what Chen Ke had seen from atop the cliff, it was wedged halfway up the mountain, neither reaching the summit nor the base, connected only by a large bridge to the circular city walls.
What he had seen on the mountain face below, resembling a massive gate, might be some other structure.
Chen Ke turned to look back up towards the top of the cliff, where there lay a small village; it was there he had encountered Parker.
From such a geographical standpoint, Chen Ke believed the village was not intended for civilians, and might not even be within Fan Hede’s territory.
Because in that nameless village, there wasn’t a road leading to the church. Chen Ke had entered the church’s library through a crack in the rocks and a broken wall.
The fractured bridge stretched out, with four large bridge piers underneath, and the layout of the houses and streets in the town below were also divided according to these four piers, splitting the town into three areas.
The largest building stood atop a distant hill, protected by a small separate fence. Of course, this hill wasn’t as high as the cliff Chen Ke was on, and geographically, should be on the same level as the church.
Chen Ke remembered playing an old PC game called "Castle," where players built their own medieval castles and defended against enemy armies.
So he used the castle structure from the game to compare it to the current Fan Hede, and found there were some similarities.
A proper medieval lord’s domain, with its own castle for residence and troop stationing, residential areas within the walls, and fields outside the town. Fan Hede undoubtedly had this structure too.
Yet, what was strange was that if the Fan Hede Kingdom had the capability to build structures within the mountainside, why not build the more important royal residences here? Moreover, there was no moat under the castle walls, which was quite unusual.
Chen Ke wanted to find a path down to the residential area, but the bridge was already broken, so he had to find another way from the bridge ramp. Fortunately, while the front was broken, the descending stairs on either side of the avenue were not completely destroyed.
Chen Ke ran to the stair entrance, from where he could descend to the underbelly of the bridge.
"Are you sure you want to go down?" Parker suddenly appeared and asked.
"Fuck!" Chen Ke exclaimed, startled, startling Parker as well.
"Why such a big reaction?" Parker asked.
"Do you not make any noise when you walk? Damn it..." Chen Ke complained, feeling a layer of cold sweat on his back.
"What’s down there...?" Parker inquired, having stayed here for a long time but never having taken a close look at the town below.
"Let’s go down and see. It looks like I can follow the bridge pillars all the way down," Chen Ke cautiously moved downwards.
"I can go with you," Parker looked down the stairs.
"Do you have enough bullets?" Chen Ke asked.
"Um... doesn’t look like it," Parker shook his head.
"So you should stay at the church. It seems safer there, monsters shouldn’t break in," Chen Ke said.
"Then... be careful down there. Whatever you’re looking to find, good luck," Parker said.
Chen Ke nodded at him and gradually descended the stairs to the airy underside of the bridge, which had no railings — a mere slip could lead to a fall.
On both sides of the bridge piers, there were small doors leading to extremely narrow staircases that descended into the hollow space inside the piers, where a black iron ladder was positioned against the wall, about 10 meters above the lower level.
Chen Ke activated his Spiritual Vision and cautiously explored step by step. Even though his vision was clear, given Bader’s appearance, he now dared not let his guard down.
He looked down over the edge and then, positioning his large sword on his shoulder with his right hand, he used his left to grasp the ladder and started to climb down.
"Clang, clang, clang..."
His footsteps sounded on the iron ladder.
"Hmm...?"
Halfway down, Chen Ke suddenly sensed a change... a hint of hot, dry air wafted around him, and he could smell something burning.
Not only that, he noticed that the color tones around him had shifted from cold blue to warm orange.
The ladder in his hands grew warm, and Chen Ke was startled, jumping down immediately.
"What the hell..."
Looking at the sudden change in his surroundings, Chen Ke was completely confused. The space inside the pier wasn’t large, and he couldn’t figure out where the red light that illuminated from the exit was coming from.
Where was this light coming from?
With that question, Chen Ke followed the light to the pier’s exit, where a wave of heat hit him, accompanied by an unpleasant burnt smell.
It had been daylight before, but now it had turned to night. The town below the bridge was unexpectedly ablaze, with most buildings reduced to blackened ruins, and Chen Ke could hear people’s cries for help.
Wasn’t it said that time stands still in the Great Void? How had it turned to night?
He went to the edge and looked up at the cathedral, only to see flickering flames; its originally white walls were scorched black.
In an instant, he remembered what Brother Discouraged had said.
"You’ve opened a path to another fragment, and you might encounter people coming from different directions..."
Another fragment...
It dawned on Chen Ke that the segments of the Great Void were the ’fragments’ Brother Discouraged mentioned. The cathedral was just one of them; each segment represented a different period in the Great Void, and the full view of the Great Void seen from each fragment was based on its appearance...
Chen Ke had broken the cathedral’s cycle, allowing him to enter the next fragment, where the night of Fan Hede was plunged into a sea of flames...
To confirm his hypothesis, Chen Ke climbed back up the ladder to the upper level of the pier.
Once he passed the midpoint of the ladder, the zero boundary point, the light and the heat wave disappeared, and Fan Hede was immersed once again in the cold winds of daytime.
"It seems this will be a remarkable journey... Let’s see what this part holds," Chen Ke muttered to himself.
