Chapter 621: Chapter 551: Old Acquaintances Meet
"Duke Bayer?" Amberser said doubtfully, "What does this lord want with me?"
The relationship between Bayer and Zariel was too complicated. Amberser was still in partnership with Zariel, and he definitely did not want to get involved with Duke Bayer.
If Zariel became unhappy, who knew what crazy things this fallen angel might do?
In business, nothing is feared more than a partner losing their sanity. Enemies akin to gods could be dealt with, but a foolish teammate was beyond saving.
Bayer had once betrayed Zariel, and Amberser had no desire to have any relationship with him.
However, the Ancestor Demon’s next words changed Amberser’s mind.
"General Bayer would like to meet you, saying he wants to introduce you to a few old friends," he said.
"Old friends... introducing them to me? Why does that sound so strange?"
The tone of the Ancestor Demon shifted, as he said reflectively, "Because, we have all changed our forms, fearing that you no longer recognize us."
In Amberser’s puzzled state, the Ancestor Demon took off his helmet, revealing a face that seemed familiar.
"You are..." Amberser frowned, deep in thought. He was certain he had seen this face before, but no matter how hard he tried to remember, he could not recall his name.
The devil sighed, "As expected, you have forgotten me."
Amberser could only explain, "I’m sorry, my soul has been damaged, and many memories are fragmented. I remember you, but I cannot recall your name."
This was not a lie. The curse of the Magic Dragon was not so easily broken, and even though Amberser had made preparations, the long-lasting fragmentation of his soul inevitably led to memory loss. Most of these were unimportant memories, so Amberser had not paid them much heed.
After all, in his lifespan of several centuries, there were many people he had forgotten, and this was just a minor detail.
However, this devil must be a significant figure, as at least Amberser remembered his face.
Old, distressed, as if weathered by time, even transformed into a devil, he still resembled a human.
The Ancestor Demon did not know whether Amberser was telling the truth or lying, so he simply introduced himself, "I am Lorencos, formerly a Ryan Paladin. It has been a long time, Master Ultraman."
Amberser suddenly remembered, and said, surprised, "Lorencos... Oh, I remember now, you were the friend of that bald general. You also had a son, did he descend into hell with you?"
Lorencos: ...
Perhaps it would have been better if he had completely forgotten.
After an awkward silence, Lorencos had no choice but to explain, "Frodo followed Allen and did not meet with any misfortune, but I’m worried he will also fall into hell like me. Under my misguided guidance, he committed too many mistakes and has yet not received forgiveness from the Lord of the Dawn."
Amberser could not remember names, but he vaguely knew what this father and son duo was about.
Originally, to deal with Ironblood General Rachel Angelo of Laine, Allen had turned Lorencos and his son Frodo against her, but Lorencos was especially significant as he was the close friend of the general.
In the end, Lorencos died at the hands of the Ironblood General, but this general also fell into a trap set by Amberser and was ultimately killed by him.
"I didn’t expect to meet you here," Amberser said.
Amberser was also surprised. Who could have thought that a paladin would end up falling into hell and transforming into a devil?
"I have committed too many sins; descending into hell was my inevitable fate, but I also didn’t expect to survive until now," Lorencos continued. "The general knew I had some association with you, which is why he instructed me to invite you. Master Ultraman, what do you think?"
Amberser said doubtfully, "What does Duke Bayer want with me?"
Lorencos shook his head, "I’m not quite sure about that; I’m just an ordinary soldier in hell."
He no longer cared about those manipulations, only wishing to die on the battlefield. If not for Bayer’s command, he would not have left the battlefield.
Amberser stroked his chin, pondering. Duke Bayer’s status was much higher than Amberser’s, even among the deities. Under such circumstances, to still play the emotion card meant that a partnership was likely being proposed.
But collaborating with a betrayer was the last thing Amberser wanted. He knew too well what kind of mindset these people had; they were certainly not good partners.
After much deliberation, Amberser finally said to Lorencos, "Alright, then please lead the way."
He could avoid today’s trouble, but with the Blood River Fortress being such a crucial place, and Bayer being the chief warlord of Blood River, it was inevitable that Amberser would have to deal with him sooner or later. Instead of disrespecting him now and having to meet Bayer under duress later, it was better to show some respect and go with the flow to have a chat with Bayer now.
At least, it wasn’t yet time to draw swords and crossbows.
Lorencos breathed a sigh of relief, reattached his helmet, then turned around to lead the way for Amberser.
Amberser still remained hidden within the Magic Mirror, floating beside Lorencos and casually probing for more information about Lorencos as they went.
"Doing quite well in Hell, I see. Paladins really do shine wherever they go."
"It’s hardly ’well’ but it is much easier here to kill individuals. Regardless of the killing, I don’t worry about committing mistakes anymore. Whether they are devils or demons, they all deserve death, including myself."
Lorencos’s experience was actually nothing noteworthy; after falling to Hell, he was thrown into the worm cave. Like most souls that descend to Hell, they all underwent this punishment.
Devoured by hellish worms, chewed up, bearing endless agony, then pulled out to become a tar-like creature, eventually drying out to turn into either a Little Demon or some other weak infernal creature.
Lorencos was such an example, after an unknown time being digested before he finally regained freedom, and unfortunately, he surfaced right on the edge of the Blood River.
Initially, by scavenging, he barely managed to survive, but Lorencos was after all a battle-hardened paladin. Even without the power of the Holy Light, his combat experience remained. Hence, among his scavenging peers, Lorencos was one of the stronger ones.
He quickly went from barely nourished to relatively prosperous, and his body became progressively stronger by continuously devouring Soul Fragments.
Finally, he decided to step into the Blood River Battlefield.
Unlike other sinners, who merely wanted to survive, Lorencos genuinely sought redemption. Knowing the significance of the Blood River Battlefield, he threw himself into it without any hesitations.
But perhaps it was fate, the more he wished to die, the less he seemed to be able to.
After a series of perilous battles, Lorencos instead accumulated enough merits to transform from a Little Demon to the powerful race of Ancestor Demon, then went on to establish even more battle honors.
Eventually, he caught the attention of Duke Bayer, who granted him the highest level of Hell Engine modification and invited him to join his Personal Guard.
At this point, Lorencos was stronger than he had ever been as a human, but he also ardently wished he could die utterly in one glorious battle.
He no longer harbored illusions of erasing his sins, he merely wanted his death to be worthwhile.
Lorencos had heard of the Deceiver’s reputation countless times. Who would have thought that the once Lich could cause such earth-shattering events? More unexpectedly, he found himself meeting him again in Hell.
Amberser consoled, "Don’t be like this, who doesn’t make mistakes? The Lord of the Dawn’s gaze penetrates many planes, maybe he’s still watching you."
Lorencos excitedly asked, "Is that true?"
"Possibly, I’m guessing. But Hell is a place for sinners to seek redemption; when all debts of sin are paid, sinners must have a destination, right?"
Lorencos looked up at the blood-red sky, reflecting, "If that’s the case, then Rachel and I might also have a chance to return to the embrace of the Holy Light, that would be wonderful."
"Rachel? That name... sounds familiar."
Lorencos said bitterly, "The bald general you mentioned just now."
Ironblood General Rachel Angelo, the Paladin whom Amberser had once deceived to death, naturally faced Hell as a consequence of his sins.
Amberser remembered and awkwardly said, "He’s also in the first layer of Hell? What a coincidence, right?"
"Err, it is indeed quite a coincidence, and moreover, like me, he is also one of General Bayer’s Personal Guards, you’ll see him soon."
Amberser suddenly had an uneasy premonition, not that he was scared of any Ironblood General. After becoming a Devil, he was nothing, hardly a concern.
But Amberser’s enemies were not limited to these two. Most of the people he had deceived to death over the centuries were not exactly saintly; surely they couldn’t all be waiting for him in the first layer of Hell, could they?
Thinking of the number of his enemies, Amberser immediately felt a tingling sensation on his scalp.
