Chapter 591 - 526 Melina’s Struggle
Chapter 591: Chapter 526 Melina’s Struggle
Melina never expected things to turn around so quickly, and Monica never expected to lose so quickly.
Although she had devoted herself to studying Charm Magic, she still had some fighting capability. The demons she had consumed over the years hadn’t been for nothing.
Her three-meter stature endowed her with great strength, and swinging a knife to chop someone wasn’t bad either; even a Cambion like Cambion, full of muscles, had been treated by Monica like a toy, thrown around at will.
But faced with the Undead clad in heavy armor that charged faster than flying, Monica only lasted two seconds.
The Flaming Longsword was swung at incomprehensible angles. Melina’s hands seemingly had no joints, moving as flexibly as a whip.
With a few snaps, Monica’s knives and the tail behind her were cut into segments, and then Monica’s belly was ripped open.
Luckily her stature was tall, or that sword would have taken off her head.
"Wait! Don’t kill me. I can still be useful!"
Monica clutched her belly, struggling to heal her wound. She could hold on for now but another strike, and her fate would be uncertain.
Melina placed her longsword on her neck and sneered, "Every Devil says that."
"Really, you want to find Duke Zariel, but it’s not just my territory along this road. I can save you half the time."
Melina couldn’t discern the truth of Monica’s words, so she could only throw a Lie Detection Ring at her.
Given Monica’s large size, her fingers couldn’t fit the ring; she had to hold the ring and answer again.
To her surprise, Melina discovered that the large-sized Succubus was actually telling the truth.
Melina frowned and said, "Is it a habit for Devils to tell the truth only when they know they’re going to die?"
Monica grimaced and replied, "This is Hell. If I told the truth from the start, I’d have been dead by now."
Melina didn’t know how to refute that. She didn’t understand these complicated matters; she was just an Undead baby, barely over a year old.
However, since the Succubus was indeed useful, Melina decided to spare her life for the time being. The Whispering Branches wrapped around Monica, continuously sealing her Magic Power, followed by a new round of cleansing.
After Monica had sworn allegiance, she could have used her charm abilities to subdue the Devils in the fortress, but Melina dared not carelessly release her powers. The devils, once freed from the charm, either fled or were killed by Melina.
The battle resulted in the loss of a small number of her subordinates.
Of the original thirteen Cambions, only five were still alive. The rest had been turned into Undead.
However, the strength under Melina’s command grew stronger. The fortress’s Devils left behind over a thousand bodies, all of which became fodder for Melina.
Watching her Undead Troop grow increasingly massive, Melina felt a bit troubled.
She wasn’t skilled in leading troops.
If they were all High-order Death Knights it would have been fine; Melina leading a cavalry charge was not a problem, but most of the forces consisted of lowly Skeleton Zombies, and the only move Melina could make was to have them chaotically charge and bite.
But a real Necromancer wouldn’t recklessly sacrifice their Undead creations. After all, not every Necromancer is like her father, who could craft Souls with his bare hands.
Moreover, moving with these slow Undead would impact Melina’s speed. She certainly couldn’t travel on foot alongside Skeleton Zombies.
So, Melina said to the severely injured Cambion, "I see you’re rather clever. Would you like to follow me?"
At that moment, Cambion’s body was devoid of a single intact bone, but on hearing Melina’s words, he still pushed himself to speak loudly, "I am willing. Please, master, let me become your servant. I will be utterly loyal..."
But before he could finish, Cambion saw Melina draw her sword and raise it high.
"Wait, what are you doing, master?"
Melina responded, "Turning you into a Death Knight. Don’t worry, you won’t lose your mind like those zombies, and... you might become a bit stronger."
Any High-order Undead knew how to turn the living into the Undead; it simply involved infusing dark magic power into the body of the living. While that sounded simple, the results of the transformation varied significantly depending on the Necromancer performing it.
The Withered Rose was among the best at this, enabling her to create legendary Death Knights like Melina, born at the Legendary Rank. Amberser wasn’t as well-studied in this area, but his soul creation skills were unmatched, and with enough time and resources, he might also be capable of creating Legendary Rank specters.
But Amberser and the Withered Rose were members of the Elegy Poetry Society, an extraordinary talent found once in a million among the Undead. A typical Necromancer who could create a High-order Undead was already considered a "master."
Melina wasn’t very skilled at converting the Undead, but she had more than enough Dark Magic Power and an array of costly supporting artifacts. To preserve Cambion’s intellect for the transformation was no difficult task. As for his potential for future enhancement... Melina wasn’t interested in his brute strength; a functioning brain was all that mattered.
Cambion looked at the raised Flaming Longsword and hastily raised his hand to stop it, saying, "Wait, my lord, I have no objections to the Cambion race, is transforming into undead really necessary?"
Melina’s longsword paused for a moment, and she looked into the eyes of the Cambion and said, "A devil can never earn my trust, but considering your valiant efforts just now, I will give you a choice. I can give you some Soul Currency and then set you free, or I can personally transform you into a Death Knight, to become my faithful servant."
Cambion knew he had come to a crossroads in his life.
Before him was the most crucial choice: to give up his identity as a Cambion to join the ranks of the undead, or to choose to make a fortune and leave this place? Cambion was not worried that Melina would go back on her word, as he had observed during this time that this undead lady was certainly too disdainful to lie to him, and she was also not good at lying.
But Cambion did not want to decide right now; he still did not know to what extent this undead lady could go... Cambion looked toward the slaughterhouse-like battlefield, well, she had already gone pretty crazy.
Just now, it was almost Melina fighting alone, with the other devils launching a siege under Monica’s charm.
But the undead lady summoned a blue tree, and then started a wild harvest, that terrifying combat power was truly frightening. Below the deity, there probably was no one who could match her.
"What, still hesitating? Then leave,"
Melina casually threw down a few Soul Currency coins; devils rely on this stuff to survive, and after absorbing them, Cambion’s wounds should recover, then he can get lost.
Melina was a bit disappointed; how could her father so easily command a bunch of people, from the Elf Queen and various goddesses to the mad Kuotuo murlocs and the greedy goblins? No matter the race, no matter the identity, just a few more words from her father and they would obediently offer up everything to him.
She couldn’t even subdue a mere Cambion.
Melina felt frustrated; she didn’t want to see this devil anymore, or she really would stab him with her sword!
However, just as Melina turned to leave, Cambion spoke up again, "Great lord, it’s not that I want to refuse your recruitment, but I promised to lead you to the Blood River Battlefield, through secret paths to the Blood River Fortress. If I turn into undead now, the relationships I’ve made before may no longer be of use."
Melina turned her head in surprise and stared at Cambion, "Are you serious?"
"Of course." Cambion raised the ring on his hand, which still showed no light.
"I swear on my soul, I’m fed up with wandering the wilderness, but no matter how hard I try, when I encounter a demon as powerful as a Succubus, I can only be trampled on the ground like trash. I’m not content, and I refuse to be a loser wanderer for a lifetime, so I hope to receive your protection, my lord, and I will use all my strength to clear the obstacles for you!"
Melina’s eyes lit up, and she said with a smile, "Good, I’ll give you a chance."
Cambion stuffed the Soul Currency coins into his chest, and the surging flames erupted from his wounds. The force of the soul was crazily absorbed, then healed the damage on his body. After a while, Cambion stood up again, looking somewhat stronger than before.
Seeing this scene, Melina said with a bit of surprise, "Devils are pretty convenient, almost like the undead."
Just as Cambion was about to pay a compliment, he heard Monica the Succubus mockingly say, "What a waste. For such minor injuries, there’s no need for so many soul currencies. Moreover, this Cambion only has a bit of petty intelligence, his talent is too poor, most of the energy from these soul currencies is wasted. If Master could give these soul currencies to me, I would create much more value for you."
Cambion narrowed his eyes at Monica, this prominent Succubus was already vying for credit, truly befitting of a devil, switching sides so quickly.
However, this was actually good news for Cambion, because it proved that Monica had truly submitted, at least until Melina was defeated by a stronger devil, Monica wouldn’t dare to betray.
Cambion did not engage in a battle of words with Monica, but instead said to Melina, "Master, since this Succubus Lord is willing to help, perhaps we can change our plan. The abilities of a Succubus are very useful, without being on guard, even demons stronger than oneself could be charmed."
"Although the nearby devil lords would have magic equipment made to resist charm, your abilities seem to be able to neutralize these magic equipments, right?"
Before Melina could grasp the meaning of Cambion’s words, Monica screamed loudly in response, "You minion, do you realize what you are doing? Are you mad, wanting to start a war?!"
Cambion responded with a cold laugh, "Look around you; the war has already begun. Those fleeing devils will spread the news of your defeat, and the local lords will swarm to tear your corpse apart without wasting a moment."
Monica didn’t refute because it had already become a reality.
No devil would overlook a weakened neighbor; in another hour or two, the armies of other lords would arrive.
Cambion knelt before Melina, passionately saying, "Master, you should lift your longsword high to conquer this wilderness, and this Succubus will be the key to our swift reclamation of this region."
Melina listened with growing excitement.
She was an undead born for war. Melina’s birth was to assist her mother in destroying that vast empire. She was meant to wield her longsword on battlefields against the Holy Light, but fate did not grant her enough time to grow, causing her to be transported to a different time and space, just like the other legends, under the power of the Time Dragon during the final battle.
That sense of powerlessness at that time had always gnawed at Melina.
Even after hearing from her mother that it was all part of the plan, that Melina had depleted a great deal of the Time Dragon’s power, laying the groundwork for the later victory.
But deep down, Melina couldn’t accept that outcome.
If one is born for war, then how could one be satisfied with being mere cannon fodder?
Excitedly, Melina said, "Alright, let’s gather our troops and sweep away all obstacles on the way to the Blood Sea!"
