Chapter 558: Chapter 497 World Forget Me

He unfolded the worn sheepskin paper, its scribbled handwriting quite messy — it seemed Selwyn could hardly steady his hand while writing this letter.

"I don’t know what name you’re using now, so I can only call you an old friend, a term I believe you would acknowledge. After all, we share a bond worth thirteen silver coins..."

Amberser read the words on the page calmly; the will did not describe a tragic future of his death, nor did it mention anything else, only the old man’s reminiscence of his life before death.

From learning magic as a youth, to meeting the love of his life, and finally watching that love leave him.

Amberser commented with a sigh, "The inevitable path of a Diviner Mage."

A young man achieves early success, gains wealth and glory, then realizes that destiny is a pitfall, the more you struggle, the deeper you sink, until you’re certain that no amount of effort could help.

Whether it’s Amberser or Selwyn or Mr. Misfortune, all Diviner Mages share exactly the same experiences. It’s just that Harvey is still young and hasn’t reached that stage yet, but sooner or later he too will undergo much the same as his predecessors.

However, Selwyn’s life had been tamer compared to Amberser’s, as the path of destiny he walked was different; he chose to hide, to evade misfortune.

Just as Amberser’s Dice of Destiny could not be seen by others but could lock down one’s fate, after the passing of Selwyn’s lover, he was also able to erase everything related to himself from the world.

It wasn’t simply being forgotten; even the books that recorded information about Selwyn would "go missing" under destiny’s orchestration. Perhaps they would get dirtied by accident or burn up, but in any event, anything that contained related information would disappear and then be forgotten by people.

The only reason Amberser could remember the name Selwyn was that he too was a Diviner Mage; to everyone else, Selwyn was someone who had never existed.

Yet, even if the world had forgotten him, he could not escape his own fate.

Death followed like a shadow, finally accompanying the hermit-like old man to the end of his days.

"I originally thought I could consider you as an enemy, but over the years, I’ve realized that we Diviner Mages can’t afford to harbor grudges against one another. You and I are both prisoners on this rugged path of fate, forcibly marching towards that death which destiny has written for us. I spent a lifetime thinking I could delay the arrival of fate, but in the end, I failed."

"By the time you read this letter, I will have been captured by fate, and you too will be ensnared by the Goddess of Fate’s net. Until fate is revealed, everything can change, which is why I won’t tell you the future I foresaw. Instead, I had my student deliver this letter to you."

...

"My friend, if you have read up to here, it means that you have had some insights and didn’t choose to run away. You might be the only Diviner Mage who has transcended fate, and to you, I entrust this last hope."

As Amberser reached the end of the will, he discerned not resentment in the lines, but a mild sense of regret. Selwyn was not as resigned as Amberser; he had been looking for a way out of destiny all his life.

The irony was that Selwyn’s method of fighting against destiny was to flee, while Amberser, who had long since chosen to lie down, habitually relied on himself rather than using the Power of Destiny at will.

Regardless, the result seemed to be the same.

After Amberser finished reading the will, the letters on the sheepskin paper moved like tadpoles, transforming into runes filled with Magic Power, turning what was once an ordinary letter into a Magic Scroll.

"This is..."

Perhaps Amberser was already the Diviner Mage who understood the Power of Destiny better than anyone else in the world, but he still couldn’t fully comprehend the runes on this scroll. Amberser only knew that this scroll condensed Selwyn’s last strength, his life’s pinnacle achievement.

The girl who inherited the name Selwyn watched the scroll in Amberser’s hands and said calmly, "This is a Spell created by my teacher. He called it ’World Forget Me,’ which can make everyone in the world forget about oneself, including everything related to them."

Amberser said to the girl, "It looks like you’re really not suited to learn from Selwyn; this scroll isn’t just about making the world forget someone that simply."

The girl asked curiously, "Then what is it?"

Amberser explained, "This is about erasing a concept from the soul of every sentient being, which might be a person or something else."

"What would happen if everyone forgot how to breathe?" the girl asked with curiosity.

Amberser gave her a look, thinking this kid had some dangerous ideas.

However, Amberser still explained, "Nothing much would happen, because breathing is a life instinct. People would just slowly forget that this act is called breathing. Medical research related to breathing would gradually be lost over time, until the act of breathing was renamed and passed down under a new term."

The girl said oddly, "That doesn’t seem to make much sense."

Amberser didn’t continue to explain, carefully storing away the scroll and then saying to the girl, "Since you are not suited to Selwyn’s path, you should change your name. By inheriting this name, you also inherit your teacher’s entanglement with destiny."

The girl hesitated for a moment and then said, "Master Ultraman, I don’t want my teacher to be truly forgotten by the world. I hope at least some people can remember this name."

Amberser fell silent for a moment, then said, "Suit yourself; I’m just warning you. From today on, you are my student."

Selwyn looked at Amberser in surprise and quickly asked, "Teacher, are you willing to accept me just like that?"

"I have no reason to refuse; there are too few Diviner Mages in this world."

"I thought..." Selwyn said hesitantly, "I thought you would demand a hefty tuition fee before accepting me."

"Then you don’t know me well enough." Amberser chuckled and then replied, "I could tell at a glance that you’re broke. You’d better be prepared to work off your tuition."

Selwyn hurriedly said, "Of course, that’s not a problem; please feel free to command me."

Selwyn had long understood what sort of person Master Ultraman was,

Amberser pointed in a direction on the small island and said to her, "Go and find your senior brother Harvey. He’s currently in need of a hand. By the way, you are my third student."

Selwyn was taken aback and said incredulously, "The third? But you just said there are so few Diviner Mages!"

No wonder the previous teacher entrusted his last moments to this new teacher; he was truly the Goddess of Fate’s favorite.

Amberser offered no explanation and, having dispatched his newly acquired student to work, he silently took out the Necromancy Codex and then typed a message in the chat group:

[My friends, my time of death is near, and I fear the debts I owe will remain unpaid.]
