Chapter 547: Chapter 489 Shael’s Temptation_2
During the time when Shael suffered severe injuries, Shadow Sin found this Dark Goddess and helped Her regain strength.
Their reason was simple, both the Dark Goddess and Shadow Sin wished to plunge the world back into shadows and chaos, hoping to establish a world devoid of sunlight.
This gave Shael a moment to breathe, or else she would have been completely dealt with by Serene.
Yet in the end, Shael failed to fulfill her promise and couldn’t return the world to chaos and shadows. Later, the Magic Goddess’s Lesser God, Azus, designed a trap that captured a large number of Shadow Sins, and Shael, fearing the power of the Magic Goddess, did not go to their aid.
By now, Shadow Sin has become an endangered and nearly extinct species.
Although it couldn’t be said that Shael betrayed Shadow Sin, she certainly owed them a great deal.
Thus, Shael never expected that when she fell into a state of weakness once again, a Poet would come to her door to help her again.
The Poet, seeing Shael’s guilt-ridden expression, instead comforted her, "Our goals were ultimately illusions. Back then Aeo hadn’t decided what kind of world to create, which is why there was a struggle between light and darkness. Now that the world is functioning, it shows Aeo is quite satisfied with the current state. We would never have been able to return everything to darkness and chaos. Even if we had won, Aeo would have just changed it back anyway."
Shael, surprised, said, "You have become much more open-minded."
Being known as the sins, the Shadow Sins naturally didn’t belong to any benevolent faction, as in the past they howled with desires to extinguish all that was light, even more extreme than their Dark Goddess.
The Poet remarked, "After so long, one must come to terms with things; otherwise, I would only be perpetually tortured. I have to say, I’ve learned a lot from Yeg, for which I am grateful."
Shael, puzzled, said, "You didn’t come just to check on an old friend, did you?"
"Of course, you must have also heard the bell toll from Talos. You must understand that the little Lich has done something big again. With a mortal body, he abducted a Deity."
The Poet’s words pricked Shael’s pride, and she angrily said, "It is only by borrowing the power of others that a mortal remains just a mortal."
"To be a mere mortal and yet able to borrow such immense power, guess what he could do when he ascends to be a Deity? Oh, he has already borrowed from Aeo, and you already know the outcome."
Shael, agitated, said, "Did you come just to mock me?"
"I came to remind you," the Poet continued, "You should now understand the importance of this Lich. I don’t mind telling you that Yeg holds him in high esteem. This lad might just succeed Kranvo to become the new Grim Reaper."
"How is that possible?!"
Shael found it incredulous; the position of Grim Reaper was immensely powerful, and Kranvo hadn’t made any significant mistakes to warrant a replacement.
"The specific reasons I cannot reveal, but seeing as we have a past, I came to give you a heads-up. The position of the Grim Reaper will soon be handed over, and this lad is one of Yeg’s favored candidates. You have dealt with him; you know this lad holds grudges, but as long as you don’t provoke him in the future, I believe he won’t bother you.
Otherwise..." the Poet paused, "just think what Kranvo did to those Demons?"
Shael certainly knew; Kranvo, as the Grim Reaper, had spent considerable time and effort battling the Abyssal Demons. The Grim Reaper had cast his powers into The Abyss, nearly invincible to any Demon. Back then, many well-known Demons were vanquished by Kranvo, earning him respect from all Deities.
Regardless of Kranvo’s cleverness, his power was tangible and real.
Such was the power of the Deity Position of Grim Reaper; even an insect inheriting it could instantly become an immensely powerful deity.
Unwilling to let it go, Shael pressed, "What exactly does Yeg see in him? I admit he’s the most cunning mortal I’ve ever encountered, but that sort of character doesn’t fit Yeg’s standards."
The previous Grim Reaper, due to his greedy and cunning nature, had caused much trouble that Yeg had to clean up, leading to the replacement with the current Kranvo.
If this Lich became the Grim Reaper, would the world have a moment’s peace?
"That’s because you are not familiar with him, so you are biased against him. This lad seems harsh towards the Deities, but he’s quite good to his own people. This shows that he has his own standards and won’t easily overstep, which is what makes him so rare," said Amberser.
The Poet took out the Necromancy Codex and gently caressed its cover, then he said to Shael, "Every member of the Elegy Poetry Society was carefully selected by Yeg, each had the chance to inherit the position of Grim Reaper, but unfortunately, most of them have already failed."
Shael asked excitedly, "What are the requirements to inherit the Grim Reaper’s Deity Position? Does Yeg really have to choose from mortals?"
Shael wished he could tell Yeg at that moment that he was willing to accept any condition, just to have the Deity Position of Grim Reaper handed to him, and he would be willing to do anything.
The Poet laughed and said, "It’s simple, overcome your own obsessions, only by transcending your own desires can you become a qualified Grim Reaper. Shael, can you let go of your hatred towards Serene?"
Shael wanted to lie and say he could, but he knew he couldn’t deceive Yeg.
"I can’t let go of my hatred. Does that mean a Lich can let go of his obsession with wealth?"
Shael felt extremely dissatisfied. Speaking of being dominated by desires, this Lich was much worse; it’s a well-known fact among all gods, and you just have to give this Lich enough gold, and he would do anything. Does such a mortal qualify to become Grim Reaper?
Wouldn’t it be that by offering enough wealth, one could be brought back to life?
But the Poet’s reply was beyond Shael’s expectation.
The vice-president of the Elegy Poetry Society said in all seriousness, "That’s actually possible. He has had many opportunities to acquire enormous wealth, such as swallowing the entire Gloomyland, monopolizing the entire Fury Tide Kingdom, or completely draining the Dwarf Kingdom’s Alchemy resources... but each time, he restrained his desires.
"He didn’t choose to swallow all the profits in one gulp but chose cooperation, for a slow and steady benefit. It sounds easy, but those are the obsessions that Undead use to anchor their souls. I don’t know how he manages to stay sane. Although he hasn’t completely transcended his desires yet, Yeg is optimistic about him. This Lich qualifies as one of the candidates."
Shael fell silent again, as if lost in thought.
After a long while, Shael extended his right hand, presenting a cluster of dark aura to the Poet.
"Since Yeg thinks highly of him, let me see if he can truly transcend his own desires. This is the complete set of rules of the Dark Web I possess, take it to that Lich."
The last time Amberser had sought Shael for guidance, he only learned a fraction of the Dark Web’s knowledge, enough to extrapolate a Magic Seal to cure Mana Addiction Disease, still far from the real Magic Web.
But this time, Shael brought out the complete Dark Web. In theory, as long as Amberser learned it, he could establish a new Magic Web and become the new God of Magic.
The Poet did not accept it but instead said to Shael, "Are you playing for high stakes? Once he can’t resist absorbing this knowledge, the Magic Goddess will completely control the Dark Web, and you’ll never have a chance to replace her."
Shael scoffed.
"I never had a chance. With the way I am now, could I possibly challenge the Magic Goddess? I included Kalsass’s Deification Magic in it because I want to see if this Lich can resist the temptation to become the God of Magic."
Kalsass’s Deification Technique, a powerful magic forever forbidden.
Initially, Kalsass performed this powerful magic to replace the Magic Goddess and control the entire Magic Web.
He succeeded, but also failed.
Moments after seizing control of the Magic Web, Kalsass was obliterated by the inability to manage the power of the Magic Web, destroying both himself and the Magic Web.
Thus, the original Magic Goddess fell.
The complete version of "Kalsass’s Deification Technique" was what Shael gave to Amberser. He wanted to see if the Lich could withstand the temptation to instantly become the God of Magic.
