Chapter 526: Chapter 478: A New Era, Old Grudges_2
"There’s a possibility," Yugas’s calmness surprised the giant shrouded in darkness, while the elegant ghoul continued, "but the Guild Leader hasn’t announced my failure, so I still have a chance. As long as there’s a chance, I won’t give up. Those young people don’t know the real secret of the Elegy Poetry Society; they don’t even know when they lost the qualifications to compete in this competition, and that’s exactly my advantage."
The dark giant fell silent again, and then he sighed.
"I don’t understand your thoughts, but just get to the point, what do you want me to do? As long as it doesn’t violate the rules of the Elegy Poetry Society, I can help you."
Yugas said happily, "I knew I could rely on you. I wouldn’t ask you to break the rules, of course. I just want you to seriously help the newcomer through the current difficulties. I hope this lich can ascend to deification soon, for then he would lose his qualification to compete with me."
"How far is he from becoming a deity?"
"I don’t know; he is very peculiar. By all accounts, as a mortal who instigated a war among deities and deceived many of them, he should have already obtained Aeo’s recognition. But there has been no reaction. I guess the Guild Leader stopped his deification, or there might be other reasons. But it doesn’t matter; let him continue to be arrogant. Aeo won’t sit idly by and allow a deity to interfere with a mortal at will, nor will he allow a mortal to toy with all gods. Deification or destruction, that is his inevitable end."
"Alright, I’ll help him, but I must kill Arthur Laine."
"You can decide on that yourself. I don’t doubt your determination, but I question your capability. You weren’t a match for Arthur Laine even when you were alive, and now that you’ve become undead, holy light affects you even more. Can you withstand Arthur Laine’s Holy Slash?"
"I don’t know, but Arthur Laine must die!"
"Then don’t act recklessly. Wait until you are absolutely certain. For now, stretch your limbs; it’s time to see this new world, old fellow."
When Yugas emerged from this underground ruin, a creature five meters tall followed behind him.
If Amberser were here, he would recognize it at a glance. Wasn’t this the Giant Puppet he had seen in the Storm Coliseum?
Compared to the one he had seen, this giant was even larger and looked more robust.
Bathing in the sunlight, the dark giant raised his hand to shield his eyes from the harsh sun. Although the sunlight only minimally affected him, it still made him feel uncomfortable.
Looking at the golden sea of sand before him, the dark giant couldn’t help but roar.
The massive sound waves stirred up dust and created a small sandstorm.
After venting for a while, the dark giant asked Yugas, "Now, which way shall we go?"
Yugas pointed forward and said, "You mentioned stretching your muscles; naturally, hunting comes first. Old fellow, have you ever tasted paladin flesh? With your size, they would be just bite-sized morsels."
"Paladins... I forget."
"Then eat more of them, and you’ll remember soon enough."
A bloody storm brewed, and the two powerful undead disappeared, heading straight for the nearest Lane City.
Two hours later, the small city of thousands was breached. Dark magic power engulfed the entire city, and by the time Laine’s reinforcements arrived, the place had been reduced to ruins.
Thousands of residents vanished without a trace; no bodies were left behind, just bloodstains everywhere.
This incident shook the entirety of Laine, thinking it was a counter-attack from the Dwarf Kingdom. The already tense situation in Laine worsened.
The demand for war weapons in Laine grew even greater.
Amberser was being urged daily by Ange Watson to complete the deal as soon as possible.
Amberser hadn’t expected the dwarves to cause trouble out of the blue. He inquired about the situation overnight and found out it wasn’t the dwarves’ doing; the destruction of the border cities in the desert wasn’t their work.
In the end, Amberser could only lament how many enemies the Laine People had.
However, selling airships was certainly not out of the question, as he didn’t want to sell the most powerful weapons of war to the Young Emperor who was possibly the Magic Dragon Tyrant.
Amberser ended up selling just a few jetpacks, which also served the purpose. Equipped with jetpacks, the paladins of Laine took to the skies with magic mirrors, capable of performing reconnaissance just the same.
Though not as efficient as airships, the endurance of airships outstripped that of jetpacks by far, being able to fly for several hours without need to land.
With the jetpacks, the longest endurance was only half an hour before they were needed to land and recharge with magic power.
Jetpacks were cheaper and single-user gear, simpler to operate than airships, meeting Laine’s immediate urgent needs to a degree.
After regaining the tactical advantage of intelligence, the orcish threat to Laine diminished considerably; there was even a sense of equals in several skirmishes.
Orcs can be micro-managed, but they only had one outstanding commander, whereas Laine had a multitude of front-line commanders, each more formidable than the orcish ones.
One person couldn’t precisely control tens of thousands of troops, so instead break them down to two hundred.
Ange Watson capitalized on Laine’s strengths, fragmenting his forces, monitoring the whole field with magic mirrors in the sky, and relying on the quick thinking of the junior officers on the front lines to adapt. The impact was remarkably good, repelling the orcish probe attacks time after time.
