Chapter 482: Chapter 447: Becoming More and More Inhuman

Melina watched her mother close the Necromancy Codex. Although clueless about what the elders had discussed, Melina sensed something amiss with her mother’s mood.

Despite no visible change in expression, Melina, having stayed by her mother’s side for so long, could detect that the mood of Withered Rose wasn’t right.

Melina hurried to Withered Rose’s side and asked, "What happened?"

Withered Rose shook her head and said, "Your father is coming. The business with the Fury Tide Kingdom is in the final stage, and then I’ll be heading back to Gloomyland. You should stay with your father; otherwise, you’ll just get tricked by slaves into mining again."

Melina felt a bit embarrassed and quickly explained, "That was an accident! They initially said their Iron Pickaxe couldn’t even scratch the surface, so I showed them it could. And then they claimed the pickaxe would break after ten uses, so I proved it wouldn’t! After that, they said it might not be exactly ten times, but close to it, and I had to prove them wrong..."

Withered Rose said helplessly, "And then you ended up digging through an entire mining tunnel with one Iron Pickaxe."

Melina said excitedly, "But in the end, I proved the pickaxe was fine!"

Withered Rose looked at her daughter and said with resignation, "Behaving like this, you will only burden your father. When can I expect you to be of any help?"

"Ah? Father is in trouble again? Did he offend another Goddess?"

Melina was almost getting used to it; other people’s fathers might be gamblers or lechers, indecisive or abusive at home, or had fallen on hard times and sold their wives and daughters as slaves.

But her father was different. He did not share the common vices; he was successful in his career, took great care of his family, and was impeccable with his friends. Anyone who helped him received tenfold or a hundredfold in return.

The only downside was that whenever he caused trouble, it involved offending a deity.

This was a bit much for a mere mortal.

There was no shortage in history of mortals who had offended deities, but none like Amberser who had offended so many across such a wide spectrum.

Withered Rose briefly explained the situation with Talos targeting Amberser, and Melina said in surprise, "The Lord of the Storm this time? Father’s troublemaking abilities are becoming more and more exaggerated."

Even Melina could understand the terror of the Lord of the Storm, and this made her quite worried. This was not a Goddess, whom her father was skilled at handling—could he solve this issue?

"Mother, what should we do now? Does father have a plan?" Melina asked with concern.

Withered Rose shook her head and said, "Talos is not so easily satisfied. Your father has ruined a wedding that was arranged by him. I suggested he marry the Princess of the Fury Tide Kingdom, but he refused."

Perplexed, Melina asked, "Ah? Mother, why would you suggest that? You got angry last time I said something wrong."

Last time, Melina let slip that Amberser should continue impersonating Monger Greyriver and marry Airel to stabilize the Fury Tide Kingdom once and for all, prompting Withered Rose to nearly give her a lesson on love.

It was unexpected that this time Withered Rose made the suggestion herself.

Withered Rose shook her head and said, "It wasn’t a big issue last time; we could solve it without marriage. But this time, I can’t help your father with the trouble he’s in."

In the past, Withered Rose could spend some money or borrow some hands to help Amberser resolve most of his problems, but now Amberser was facing troubles all related to deities. Withered Rose felt helpless, finding herself turning to Amberser for assistance with her own issues instead.

What baffled Withered Rose even more was when she began to care about such matters.

Did the destruction of Laine matter to her?

Withered Rose even started to worry about how Amberser would react when she perished.

This odd feeling was confusing, leaving Withered Rose unsure of how to deal with it.

So, when the topic of the wedding came up, Withered Rose tentatively asked Amberser if he was interested in marrying the Princess Raging Tide.

In Withered Rose’s eyes, the Princess from Fury Tide Kingdom wasn’t much different from the Drow Elves; if Amberser liked her and it solved the problem, then it was good.

But after receiving a negative response, Withered Rose felt a tinge of happiness.

If Amberser didn’t marry Airel, how would he resolve this issue? Withered Rose couldn’t just watch Amberser suffer the punishment of Talos.

The last Lich targeted by Talos was turned into a Lesser God, tormented for countless years, before managing to barely escape.

Not every Deity was as lucky as Vishalon; if they couldn’t flee, they would be tortured to death by Talos.

This troubling thought made Withered Rose feel lost. What was happening to her?

An irritation welled up inside her, the first time Withered Rose felt emotionally unstable over something other than Laine.

Unsure of what to do, Princess Airel suddenly came to Withered Rose’s room.

Airel greeted Withered Rose and then turned to Melina saying, "Remember we talked about going out to sea to hunt Narwhals? There’s a Whaling Harpoon Ship setting out today. Would you like to join?"

Melina’s eyes lit up.

After spending time together, Airel and Withered Rose had a cordial but superficial relationship; however, Melina, who didn’t seem too bright, was actually much more enjoyable company.
