Chapter 435: Chapter 407 We Also Split Up
Arthur Laine was indeed a formidable weapon, and when deployed, it would cause terrifying damage, but it could only be used as a critical card, not thrown out at the beginning of the game to end it. On the contrary, playing it too early would only give the Laine people time to prepare.
Even a nuclear bomb, no matter how powerful, isn’t enough to destroy a country, not even a small one.
A great nation with a population of hundreds of millions, and with plenty of mid to high-level talents, as long as the core of Laine hadn’t been completely abandoned, the Empire would have a very powerful ability to repair itself. Now, the mainland nations were all tacitly uniting against Laine, but their goal was just to reclaim lost lands, not to join forces and obliterate Laine.
Anyone with a bit of sense would know that Laine was far from destruction at the moment.
Withered Rose was very unwilling to accept this, but she had to admit that what Amberser said was right.
If it was only a matter of changing an Emperor for the Laine Empire, there would be no point at all. Withered Rose hated the name Laine; she wanted everything that the name stood for to vanish into thin air, not for Arthur Laine to become the Holy King of mankind once again.
Withered Rose clenched her fists, saying excitedly, "Is there really no way, how much longer must we wait for this Empire to be destroyed?"
With the obsession of a Lich touched, Withered Rose was already completely unable to remain calm, she couldn’t even think coherently at the moment. Withered Rose could only look at Amberser, as if he was her only hope.
Amberser reassured her, "Don’t be nervous, I have long had a plan. A city destroyed by external forces will be rebuilt by its people, but a tower that collapses from within is only going to be spurned by the survivors. Only if Laine splinters from within does it stand a chance of destruction; otherwise, the more pressure it faces now, the more it urges the Laine people to set aside their differences and unite."
Damage from outside will leave fond memories in the hearts of those involved, but if they self-destruct through their own folly, the survivors will only want to quickly forget the past, and to forget is the true destruction.
What Amberser wanted to destroy was the very concept of Laine, for it to no longer represent justice, human paramountcy, nor the Empire that was favored by the Lord of the Dawn, but instead, a piece of trash that needed to be buried in the earth.
Withered Rose understood what Amberser meant, but still worried, she said, "Just relying on Allen Watson? Is he enough?"
Withered Rose didn’t really think much of this young Paladin. In her view, he was just an idiot being manipulated by Amberser. Sure, he had a bit of a reputation now, but she really hadn’t seen anything to suggest he could overthrow the Empire.
Amberser shook his head, "Allen Watson is just one man, but he had a good teacher. Arthur Laine taught him the most important saying, ’A man can be killed, but not an idea.’ Allen is now not just an individual, he has become a carrier of ideas, and already has a group of people with the same thought by his side.
"Lady Rose, this is a virus for Laine, one that will keep spreading. When the new ideas that Allen represents override the original concept of Laine, Laine will perish."
Withered Rose was silent for a long time before she said to Amberser, "I trust your judgment, so what do we do now?"
Amberser replied with a smile, "Do nothing, Lady Rose. I guess in a month’s time, Laine will be quite the spectacle. If you truly cannot bear to do nothing, perhaps you could do me a favor?"
The Lich’s obsession was too strong to be suppressed by reason alone.
Just as with Amberser himself, if someone were to offer him a mountain of gold, he would truly be hooked, even if he knew it was a trap, he would try everything to take the bait.
Just like Gareth, as long as it concerned his wife, there would be no reasoning with him. A fierce warrior on the battlefield would become timid, turning into a fool who could be tricked at any moment.
In such a state, no undead could speak of reason.
Amberser was genuinely afraid that Withered Rose would not be able to resist doing something foolish, which could ruin the situation they had painstakingly created.
Distracting her attention was the best method, keeping Withered Rose busy and temporarily not thinking about Laine ensured there wouldn’t be any mishaps.
"What would you have me do?" Withered Rose asked.
"A few days ago, I encountered a few idiots. At first, I thought it was a very common conspiracy, but now something feels off," Amberser shared his encounter with Aeolus and continued, "At first, I thought that the Ocean Deities had sent such a fool to snatch the followers of Talos, but now that I think about it, it seems strange. Why would the Ocean Deities use such an obviously doomed method to compete for the followers of Talos?"
Gods fighting over followers is nothing new, like Shael, that particularly despicable Goddess, would even send her Night Judges to kidnap other people’s parents, brainwash children, and coerce a change of faith.
But even such despicable methods were better than Aeolus the fool; they have a higher success rate.
Imagine, a clearly mentally-challenged naked man, suddenly showing up in Fury Tide Kingdom, claiming he wants to marry Her Royal Highness the Princess... wouldn’t they beat his brains out?
Even if Aeolus did have some abilities, let’s say the endless waves that grant him eternal life were true, that would just lead Fury Tide Kingdom to kill him again and again in rage, and what would he gain in the end?
Amberser, though puzzled, still hadn’t thought much about Talos.
The reason was simple; Talos was the deity worshipped by Airel, and getting Airel married was just a matter of speaking a word, she could even marry a shark if necessary; there was no need to be so roundabout.
Amberser still tended to think that it was other deities plotting against Talos, but it might not be the Ocean Deities declaring war against the Furious Gods. It seemed more like there was a troublemaker stirring things up in the middle.
Aeolus was very likely a pawn of a third-party deity, aiming to provoke a fight between Talos and the Ocean Deities and then reap the benefits as a fisherman would.
But who could it be?
The Prince of Lies? Dimogorgen? Or maybe some deity from the Evil Camp got a whimsical urge to cause trouble?
Ah, don’t these deities know anything about peaceful coexistence? What’s the point of fighting and killing all the time, when mortals end up dying? If you’re going to fight, why not go to the Divine Realm and have it out, to see if Aeo won’t strike you down.
These deities are really both cowardly and malevolent.
After venting a slew of hell-deserving thoughts to himself, Amberser finally said to Withered Rose, "Although I’ve written to Fury Tide Kingdom to keep an eye on Aeolus, I don’t think that’s safe enough. Since I’m going to do business with Fury Tide Kingdom anyway, and turn their kingdom into my Alchemy Factory, I would like you to negotiate on my behalf. At the same time, keep a close watch on Aeolus for me. We can’t let him destabilize Fury Tide Kingdom and disrupt the Alchemy Factory plans."
"You want me to go?" Withered Rose hesitated for a moment, then said with a smile, "Understood, this is our business, right?"
Amberser was taken aback for a second before responding, "That’s right, you do have a share. Setting up the Alchemy Factory will need Gloomyland’s help, as for the specifics of the share distribution..."
Amberser had never thought of monopolizing the benefits.
This was territory that the Elegy Poetry Society had helped to conquer. Not only Withered Rose, Gareth also had to get a share, as did Aige. Except for the Vampire Hake Stone, who didn’t help much and thus didn’t get a share, everyone else would share the profits.
The more powerful allies on the same ship, the more stable that ship will be.
If the chairman and the Poet were willing to ask for a share, Amberser would be willing to give them some.
It’s just a pity that he shouted for a few days in the group chat, and the other members of the Elegy Poetry Society ignored him, seemingly uninterested in these matters.
Withered Rose shook her head and said, "Those details aren’t important, you know money means nothing to me. It’s you I care about. I will give you all the wealth you desire, and you help me destroy the Laine Empire. Other things don’t need to be divided between us."
Now it was Amberser’s turn to be at a loss for words. She was so generous he was almost embarrassed.
"Don’t worry, I will definitely help you fulfill your wish. The Laine Empire will be destroyed, that’s a promise I give to you, not even the Lord of the Dawn can save Laine!" Amberser said firmly.
Withered Rose looked at Amberser, feeling that this Lich was more reliable than any deity. For seventeen hundred years, so many Evil Gods had tried to destroy the Empire, but in the end, they became stronger. In less than a year, Laine was already showing signs of internal division; he was the most precious gift Aeo had sent her.
With that in mind, Withered Rose also said to Amberser, "I promise you as well, I won’t let that Aeolus take the Princess of Fury Tide Kingdom away."
"Thank you, meeting you has been the greatest fortune of my life," Amberser replied gratefully.
No one had ever been so generous to him; Withered Rose was like the biggest cheat code he had encountered after his transmigration, as if a reward arranged by fate itself.
Hearing Amberser’s words, Withered Rose suddenly felt a strange sensation; her heart, filled with quicksilver, seemed for a moment as if it wanted to start beating again.
Was this the feeling Pale Bone talked about?
Withered Rose composed herself and then asked, "So, what are you planning to do next?"
"As soon as the loose ends on Gold Coin Island are tied up, I’m going to set out with Aige in search of the Ocean Deities. To seize the faith in the oceans, we can’t avoid dealing with these deities. It’s a chance to investigate Aeolus as well, and at least confirm whether this fool really is sent by the Ocean Deities."
"If he’s not, then it could be a proper door-knocker."
Someone impersonating the Ocean Deities, granting Aeolus the power to control the seas—if you Ocean Deities don’t want to be outplayed, then you should know who to cooperate with.
In this day and age, when it comes to schemes and machinations, one simply cannot bypass Amberser the Lich.
As long as the Ocean Deities are not fools, they would listen to Amberser’s suggestions.
And as long as Amberser gets a chance to speak, everything becomes simple.
