Chapter 379: Chapter 352: Do You Really Think Headless Bro is Just a Freeloader?
Although the next destination was the territory of the Overseas Dragon Clan, Amberser wouldn’t foolishly show up unannounced.
Such a significant secret concerning the future of the species surely wouldn’t be swayed by Miss Bone Dragon’s influence; if Amberser dared to ask directly, he’d definitely be burned to ashes by the Dragon Race within the next second.
Therefore, some preparations were needed in advance.
For instance, it was a good idea to first inquire about Gareth’s situation.
Don’t be fooled by Gareth being a son-in-law; this was a son-in-law who had hidden tens of millions in private funds and even ran away from home—things that Miss Bone Dragon might not be able to speak of, he might very well be able to disclose.
Amberser sent Gareth a message saying, "Brother Gareth, has there been any easing in your marital discord lately? Do you need a bit of relationship counseling?"
It took a long while before Gareth replied to Amberser: "You, a single Skeleton, teach me how to get along with my wife?"
"Diga Ultraman: I may be single now, but I have several hundred years of experience in dating others."
"Headless Knight’s Crown: Stop boasting. What you have is experience in soliciting and one-night stands, aren’t they? If you had the slightest ability in this area, would you still be single? The Rose Queen is almost ready to give you the entire Underground Kingdom."
Amberser paused for a moment—what was Headless Bro rambling about? His dealings with Withered Rose were nothing but normal transactions, and the Undead have no heart to entertain the idea of falling in love, except for Headless Bro and Miss Bone Dragon, who, for some reason, managed to maintain such feelings.
If Withered Rose had even the slightest affection for him, would she have sent so many beautiful Drow Elves his way?
Katherine had stayed with Amberser for so long; if Withered Rose had that sort of intention, she would have stormed over to drive Katherine out long ago.
Poor Gareth, influenced by a woman to the point where it affected his sword-drawing speed, yet still looking to drag others down with him.
Though internally dismissive of men like Gareth, blinded by love, Amberser still replied: "You’re right, it seems I have no natural talent in this area. Bromance aside, why don’t you share some of your wisdom with me? Have you two had any recent quarrels? What about? I’d love to hear."
"Headless Knight’s Crown: We’ve not been fighting, but Pale Bone has been so busy lately that she hasn’t had the time to check my private funds."
Here it comes, the crucial information was about to be revealed.
Amberser quickly pressed on: "Busy with what? What could you Overseas Dragon Clan possibly be busy with? Having kids or cooking fish?"
Amberser originally meant to probe, but Gareth’s subsequent reply caught him by surprise.
"Headless Knight’s Crown: You should know about the Astral Red Dragons coming from the Star Realm; they were let in by you, after all. After their arrival, relations between Bone Dragons and other members of the Dragon Race became strained, forcing Pale Bone to go back and help."
Amberser asked in confusion: "How does that involve Bone Dragons? If Astral Red Dragons arrived, what conflict could they possibly have with Bone Dragons?"
"Headless Knight’s Crown: How could there not be any? Those Red Dragons brought a bunch of warty creatures, proclaiming they want to cooperate with other Giant Dragons to return to the mainland. The Bone Dragons disagreed, and old and new grievances surfaced together, nearly erupting into conflict. The Astral Red Dragons and those warty creatures kept fanning the flames. I had to intervene and kill more than a dozen Astral Red Dragons, and that finally settled those newcomers down a bit. They’re not fighting now, but are preparing for negotiations, so Pale Bone got busy."
Amberser fell silent for a long long time—Headless Bro was truly tough as nails.
To have killed over a dozen Red Dragons right in front of the Dragon Race? Even if the Overseas Dragon Clan didn’t come to their aid, Gareth’s opponents were over sixty Red Dragons and tens of thousands of Githyanki—wasn’t that a bit too impressive? Perhaps the Bone Dragon family lent him a hand?
"Diga Ultraman: Your intervention... is there a problem with that? Aren’t you worried about other members of the Dragon Race taking issue with it?"
"Headless Knight’s Crown: These outsiders dared to bully my wife—do I need anyone’s approval to give them a lesson? You really think I’m just a son-in-law to the Dragon Race? It was Pale Bone who didn’t want to leave her kind, which is why I stayed on Dragon Island. Those Giant Dragons don’t control me. I’ve kept a low profile for too long, and all sorts of riffraff dare to babble before me."
Alright, it seems he had misunderstood. This wasn’t a son-in-law; he was a Dragon King indeed.
However, did the Bone Dragon clan originally not get along with the other Giant Dragons? Amberser hadn’t really researched this, after all, the Dragon Race had been extinct for too long, and when Amberser traveled through time, the continent no longer had legends of Giant Dragons.
After asking in detail, Amberser managed to roughly understand what had happened.
First of all, the concept of the Dragon Race wasn’t actually accurate. Before the Magic Dragon Tyrant was born, Chromatic Dragons, Metallic Dragons, Time Dragons, and so on were like independent nations, not only unrelated to each other, but most harbored animosity towards each other.
Even the Chromatic Dragons under Goddess Tiamat were fighting each other, with no dealings between them, only mutual exploitation.
This was in keeping with the habits of Giant Dragons; as apex predators, their only enemies were each other, hence the generally poor relations across different dragon species.
If a kind of Giant Dragon was killed by humans, the other Dragon Clans wouldn’t seek revenge or anything. They would either pretend not to know or even applaud it.
That changed with the appearance of the Magic Dragon Tyrant. As heirs to the pinnacle of the Dragon Race, Time Dragons used their absolute power to subdue all Giant Dragons and then joined forces to establish the Dragon Dynasty. At that time, all Giant Dragons accepted tributes from other races on the continent, treating intelligent species like humans as cattle.
This was the Dragon Race’s first grand alliance, and because they could get endless gold and food by simply lying around, without having to fight each other, and since there was one dragon per city, the dragons all consented to this way of living.
Many years later, Arthur Laine led heroes of all races and decimated the Giant Dragons, leaving only a tenth of their number. The surviving dragons had no choice but to kneel before Arthur Laine and sign an eternal covenant never to return to the mainland.
Then the few surviving dragons fled overseas, finding islands to barely survive on. And because the Dragon Race was so weak then, different species of Giant Dragons had to band together, with no distinctions between races.
They even took the initiative to construct Dragon Tomb Island so that all Giant Dragons would die there, converting into Bone Dragons. This was considered a heretical act, as most of the Dragon Race disliked undead creatures, considering becoming a Bone Dragon a desecration in their eyes.
But there was no choice, without that, how could young dragonlings be protected?
The first grand alliance of the Dragon Race was catalyzed by the Magic Dragon Tyrant, and the second alliance came about because survival became untenable.
Many years passed, and the Overseas Dragon Clan had gotten used to the presence of Bone Dragons. And at that time, the Astral Red Dragons arrived – these distant relatives from the Star Realm had not gone through such a complex history; the Red Dragons harbored only enmity and disdain for the Bone Dragons.
The Githyanki were also all militarists, without a single diplomatic talent among them. They heightened tensions with the Bone Dragon clan as soon as they set foot on the island.
The Star Realm Dragon Clan came with hopes of returning to the mainland, and the other Dragon Clans were unwilling to give up that hope. As a result, the Bone Dragon clan was abandoned, treated as a declaration of allegiance offered to the kin from the Star Realm.
The Githyanki didn’t mind confronting the Bone Dragons, and just as a major battle was about to erupt, Gareth appeared, riding his wife.
Without warning or threat, it was simply a ferocious charge.
Gareth’s formidable combat power, combined with Miss Bone Dragon’s stealth talent, made this couple virtually invincible. Gareth chopped off more than a dozen heads of Red Dragons, inflicting thousands of casualties among the Githyanki. Such fearsome losses caused the Githyanki and Astral Red Dragons to abandon their arrogance and opt for peaceful negotiations.
[Headless Knight’s Crown: It’s estimated that they’ll have reached an agreement in a few more days.]
[Diga Ultraman: Do you know how they plan to lift the restrictions of the covenant?]
[Headless Knight’s Crown: I’m not too clear about that, I heard it’s a secret. You’re inquiring about this information, do you want to prevent the Dragon Race from returning?]
[Diga Ultraman: Not necessarily, it depends on where the benefits lie. But considering the relationship between you and your spouse and me, whatever I do, I’ll consult your opinions first. What do you think if I stop them from returning?]
[Headless Knight’s Crown: Whatever, I don’t care. Be it the Dragon Race or the people on the continent, they are all the same to me. It doesn’t matter to me how they fight, as long as Pale Bone is happy.]
Amberser understood, the key issue was with Miss Bone Dragon. As long as she was satisfied, Amberser didn’t need to worry about conflicts within the Elegy Poetry Society.
However, the cost of negotiating with the Bone Dragon would probably be incredibly high.
