Chapter 356: Chapter 332: Allen’s Allies
Frodo was once a very ambitious young man.
His family had a profound legacy; his father was Lorencos, a Legendary Holy Warrior, and as the only child, he was carefully nurtured by this legendary figure from a young age.
Frodo was also talented and hardworking, standing out among his peers.
If it were not so, he would not have qualified to guard the gates for the Ironblood General.
That was a personal guard position; the very job his father Lorencos once held, indicative of the high regard the Ironblood General had for him, almost a clear statement that he was to take over his father’s duties someday, regardless of whether he reached the Legendary Rank or not; they would still make good use of him.
Until the day Amberser arrived in Flow Flame City, Frodo was a young man full of high spirits.
Until, suddenly, the Undead Curse appeared.
Frodo sensed his body slowly becoming undead.
It wasn’t very painful, not even comparable to the injuries sustained during regular training, but it brought with it a hundredfold fear.
Frodo was not afraid of death, but rather feared falling into Hell after dying.
This was the fear no believer of any Deity could escape.
Only the devout could be granted entry to the Divine Realm by the Deities after death; otherwise, one might fall into Hell.
Fortunately, the Lord of the Dawn was a generous Deity, and most Paladins, as long as they kept their oaths, should not find it difficult to enter the Divine Realm.
This wasn’t just wishful thinking; Light Priests could summon Heroic Spirits from the Divine Realm to assist in battle, and they found that many Paladins who had not achieved Legendary status could be called forth, indicating that the admission standards to the Divine Realm weren’t too stringent.
Frodo had always believed he would certainly enter the Divine Realm, after all, he was a Paladin who upheld his oath. Moreover, he had earned many merits for the Laine Empire.
He had followed the Ironblood General through campaigns from east to west, fought against the Iron Guards of Dwarves, battled Orc legions, slaughtered many malevolent creatures like Goblins and Gnolls, and even boasted the feat of killing an adult Ogre single-handedly.
Having done so many good deeds, Frodo was convinced that he was definitely going to the Divine Realm.
Therefore, he was not afraid of death, fighting with unparalleled bravery in every battle.
Until, he became an Undead.
This curse was too vile; it actually turned a Paladin into an Undead, utterly unable to resist.
And the Undead were certainly destined for Hell!
By the time he was sent to the Imperial Capital to meet with the Emperor, Frodo had already completed his transformation into an Undead.
He could feel his body had become a mass of dead flesh, his Soul was eroded by dark forces, and he could hardly restrain himself from feeling a hunger for the guards escorting him; he wanted to bite through their necks and devour their fresh blood.
Frodo desperately resisted this urge, and eventually managed to revert back to a human being under the power of the Magic Dragon Armament reversing time.
But Frodo vividly remembered the sensation of becoming an Undead; at the moment of his complete death, he did not see the guiding Holy Light of the Divine Realm.
Initially, Frodo thought his failure to ascend to the Divine Realm of the Lord of the Dawn was due to his transformation into an Undead. Now that he had recovered, everything would return to normal, and he could still go to the Divine Realm.
However, self-consolation seemed meaningless; no matter how much he tried to convince himself, the fear of death continued to linger in his mind.
Because of this fear, he found his strength beginning to wane.
The power of Paladins came from belief; once fear and anxiety started, the power of Holy Light would also fade away.
Just when he was about to break his oath, Frodo encountered a young man even younger than himself, but upon seeing him, Frodo nearly drew his sword to attack.
For this young man was Allen Watson, the one rumored to have betrayed the Laine Empire.
Frodo knew he should act and call out loudly. Although it was late at night, and he had gone out to the outskirts of the city to chop trees and vent his frustration.
But if he could make the Holy Light shine bright, such a signal would surely be noticed by the Laine Army in the city, who would come to his aid immediately.
Just that, after trying, he realized he could not muster the power of Holy Light at all.
Frodo panicked, seeming to face certain death.
After all, Allen Watson was the Empire’s youngest Legendary figure; whether a traitor or not, it wouldn’t change the fact that he could end Frodo with a mere gesture.
Frodo was so frightened that his legs went weak, and he lacked even the strength to run away.
Just when Frodo thought he was about to die, the traitor did not draw his sword against him but instead helped him to his feet and used the Holy Light to drive away his fear.
This was the power of the Aura of Courage, something Frodo was familiar with, because he loved to activate this aura during battles, leading his comrades in the charge.
He never thought there would come a day when the Aura of Courage would be used to dispel his own fear.
Allen’s Holy Light was like the warm rays of the dawn sun, making Frodo feel warm and relieved. A person with such power should not betray the Empire, should he?
Allen politely said to Frodo, "Sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but you seemed a bit off just now."
Frodo felt ashamed; he had just been scared to the point of nearly wetting his pants, totally losing face as a Holy Warrior.
Frodo said awkwardly, "I was just... um... passing through..."
Allen laughed and said, "Heh, it seems your oath doesn’t require honesty."
"Enough, Allen Watson, what exactly do you want to do?! You’ve come to Flow Flame City secretly, do you have some scheme!?"
