Chapter 335: Chapter 312: Another Old Acquaintance
Destiny is always elusive.
Mr. Misfortune had always thought himself to be the favored one by destiny, as most of his life had gone smoothly.
Since becoming a Diviner Mage, he had lost only once.
For centuries, he had served as the shadow prime minister of the Kingdom of Impure Hymns, ostensibly a Court Mage, yet the majority of the proposals were reviewed and amended by him.
His efforts over the years had driven the rapid development of the Kingdom of Impure Hymns, not only amassing a substantial wealth but also significantly growing the population.
Top to bottom, everyone was extremely satisfied with Mr. Misfortune.
Later, as Laine became increasingly despotic, Mr. Misfortune chose the safest countermeasures, preventing the domestic economy and public welfare from being impacted, while effectively blocking Laine’s offensives.
Everything seemed perfect.
But when did he become unable to foresee the future of the kingdom?
Even though a multitude of destiny’s threads were interlaced before him, Mr. Misfortune could no longer discern anything about the kingdom among them.
It was from that moment that he started to feel anxious.
Yet for some reason, the moment Amberser made an appearance, Mr. Misfortune felt a sense of reassurance. This bastard was always up to all kinds of schemes and stratagems. Leaving it to him, perhaps he really could save the kingdom.
Mr. Misfortune did not delay and immediately went to prepare the materials Amberser needed.
Meanwhile, Amberser returned to his private space and began to search through a large collection of bookshelves.
He flipped through a dozen books related to Demons, summoning a multitude of Mage Hands, each clutching the heavy tomes and flipping through the pages.
Amberser spread out his perception and read these dozen or so books simultaneously.
This was an advantage of a Lich, for Amberser did not need to use his eyes. With powerful enough perception, he could process a vast amount of information all at once.
As the pages flipped faster and faster, one by one the books were tossed back onto the shelves by Amberser.
Finally, he placed one book in front of him and began to read carefully.
Quite some time later, Amberser closed the book.
Each type of Devil script had its uniqueness, coming from different masters; the shapes of the script would vary. He had found the origins of those devilish scripts in the book, knowing which Hell Lord’s hand the contract originated from.
What troubled Amberser was that these contracts were from two Hell Lords—Goddess Tiamat and Zariel.
The Evil Dragon Goddess Tiamat had quite a karma with Amberser. Never had he imagined the Evil Dragon Goddess was not only causing trouble in Alchemy City and collaborating with Shael, but she had also laid a hand in the Tiflin.
Handling the Evil Dragon Goddess wasn’t a big issue. Amberser was quite familiar with her since most of the heretical cults on the continent had some connection to her, and during his adventuring days, he had dealt quite a bit with these cults and knew many of the Goddess’s methods.
It was like last time, creating a Half-Dragon was already the limit for Tiamat. Since the Dragon Race was exiled and the Dragon Worship Sect was nearly eradicated, her power could hardly reach this continent.
It seemed Tiflin had merely gained another follower of the Evil Dragon Goddess. It wasn’t too difficult to deal with.
What really troubled Amberser was Zariel, the Angel who had dared to attack Hell and ultimately fell into Devilhood. She was the ruler of the First Layer of Hell, her status far superior to that of Goddess Tiamat.
More importantly, Zariel liked to collect powerful warriors.
Over the years, the souls of many mighty warriors had been brought into Hell by various means to become her subordinates.
This was an exceedingly powerful army, and it was said that Zariel had the ability to send these warriors’ souls to the Mortal World, possessing either her followers or those who had made deals with her.
This was truly terrifying, an army composed entirely of strong warriors, having trained in the harsh environment of Hell for who knows how many years.
If this army of Hell were to appear, it would mean a catastrophic disaster for the kingdom.
"The Goddess Alliance keeps reappearing time and again, but this time without Shael as the insider, it’s going to be hard to disrupt it. The contracts coming from these two Hell Lords suggest that the Gates of Hell at the border must be connected to them, implying infiltration began long ago. Elder brother, what exactly have you been guarding? How could you not have noticed such a crucial matter?"
After grumbling a few words about Mr. Misfortune, Amberser began to ponder.
Amberser now needed to address two issues. The first was to prevent the entire kingdom from falling into Hell, and the second was to stop the impending invasion by Laine.
Logically, the first step was to root out the traitor within the Tiflin Kingdom, the key figure conspiring with the Hell Lords. With the current intelligence, it most likely was that Hell Knight, Domino Lauri.
Eliminating this person might prevent the kingdom’s descent into Hell.
But in reality, such a move was difficult to execute. After so many years, their plans had undoubtedly come to fruition. There was no doubt that the Gates of Hell at the borders were part of their scheme, and his poor senior brother was one of the pawns utilized.
If the Gates of Hell at the borders were related to the entire corruption plan, they mustn’t be detonated; otherwise, it would surely fulfill the Devils’ desires.
And without the obstruction of the Gates of Hell, who could withstand the assault of Laine?
It was absolutely imperative for Amberser to prevent Laine from capturing the lands of Tiflin. Otherwise, Laine’s overall strength would surge, and how would they fight back afterward?
In other words, capturing the traitor was no longer key to the matter.
"We must first unearth the details of the Hell Lords’ plans and then devise the appropriate countermeasures," he concluded.
Amberser began scribbling on a pile of draft papers, writing and drawing. Whenever faced with major events, he would lay out numerous drafts to calculate every possibility before crafting the actual plan.
After a day had passed, Mr. Misfortune delivered detailed intelligence on Domino Lauri, spanning from her childhood to the current day, including information about her daily life and habits.
Amberser, astonished, said, "How is it so detailed? Did you prepare this in advance?"
Mr. Misfortune’s expression became a bit strange as he shifted the topic, "Don’t worry about how I got it, just read it. I assure you it’s real."
Amberser stared at Mr. Misfortune for a while, entertaining a possibility in his mind: Could it be that the old man had a secret crush on this Hell Knight? Perhaps upon discovering her true nature, he painfully let go of his many years of affection?
Although Amberser was quite curious, seeing Mr. Misfortune’s expression indicated that any questioning would be futile. He hurriedly focused on examining the data.
The content was abundant and detailed, but Amberser, with his goal in mind, quickly found the intelligence he sought.
When dawn broke the next day, Amberser spoke to Mr. Misfortune, "It’s about time. I’ve figured out how to uncover Domino Lauri’s entire plan. Could you introduce me to her? Today, perhaps?"
Mr. Misfortune looked at Amberser skeptically, "Isn’t that too far-fetched? I’ve been busy for years without success, and you’ve found a way in one night? Are you conning me?"
"How could that be? Am I such a person..." Amberser started to retort out of habit but, seeing the mocking look in Mr. Misfortune’s eyes, he changed his response, "Even if I did trick you once, it was just that one time. Rest assured, I’ve passed up on billions in business to come help here; I’m not here to fool you."
Although Mr. Misfortune still harbored doubts, having heard Amberser’s assurance, he could only nod in agreement.
"I can take you to see her, but I can only get you an audience. She might call the guards on sight. Do you still want to proceed?" he asked.
Amberser nodded, "Don’t worry, just let me see her. Your information says she likes to have afternoon tea and then nap for an hour. Let’s choose that time."
"Alright, follow me."
Mr. Misfortune led Amberser towards the Teleportation Circle, the surrounding soldiers treating both of them as if invisible.
The fates’ threads were once again severed by Mr. Misfortune, granting them unobstructed passage.
Amberser said in awe, "This skill is indeed beyond me; I just can’t learn it."
"Of course, it’s probably the only thing I do better than you," Mr. Misfortune remarked with a sigh.
"That’s hardly the case, you’re also older than me, aren’t you?"
Mr. Misfortune glared at Amberser, then activated the Teleportation Circle, and the two traversed hundreds of kilometers, arriving in another city.
The melodious sound of music wafted through, heralding their arrival at the Royal Capital of the Kingdom of Impure Hymns—Harmony City. Here, the city’s musicians sang praises day and night for the great Arthur Laine.
Even for one who had seized power through impure means, they still sang hymns of heroism—such was the irony of the kingdom’s name.
