Chapter 312: Chapter 290 Clergy and Negotiation
Allen couldn’t believe what was happening before his eyes, had he just earned a Magic-breaking Longsword worth two hundred thousand Gold Coins so easily?
At first, he thought he might be under an illusion, until the edge of the sword cut his finger, the pain making Allen realize this was definitely not a hallucination.
No Paladin would dislike such a longsword, it was much stronger than the standard-issue longsword Allen had previously received in the army.
Eager to try it out, Allen immediately began swinging the longsword, carefully feeling its balance and other details.
After fumbling with it for quite some time, he finally found the right grip.
But at that moment, Gareth returned, and the Headless Knight gestured Allen over with a crook of his finger, saying, "A new weapon, you need a real battle to get used to it, come on, I’ll help you."
Just like before, Gareth put away his armor, but he was no longer unarmed. In his hand was a long knife wrapped in black flames.
Gareth twirled the knife and said to Allen, "Come on, it has been a long time since I’ve found a worthy opponent."
The long knife turned into a blur, slashing towards Allen. In his eyes, Gareth’s strike seemed like a Giant Dragon descending from the heavens, about to completely shred him.
The fierce and powerful aura surprised Allen; in their previous spars, the Headless Knight had been merely toying with a child.
Yet, Allen remained unpanicked, the edge of his sword pivoting to meet Gareth’s knife.
The fight in the small woods wasn’t intense, as both of them restrained their power, focusing purely on skill.
Amberser paid no mind to this, as Gareth was probably too long without a battle against a Legendary fighter and couldn’t take it anymore. Having finally met Allen, he would rather hold back most of his strength just to have a good fight.
Amberser believed Gareth wouldn’t kill Allen, and as long as he didn’t die, it was all good.
Therefore, Amberser stopped caring about the situation in the woods and, taking Melina with him, headed towards the mayor’s residence in Flower Grace Town.
With the trouble dealt with, it was time to accomplish the main goal.
To sell the Drow’s priesthood to the Elf Tribe, hoping to exchange for the protection of the Elven Gods, so that Amberser could ascend to deity with peace of mind.
It seemed that the orders from the Elven King were clear because as soon as Amberser declared his identity, the Elf mayor was startled and promptly assured that he would immediately relay the message of Amberser’s visit.
This respectful behavior made Melina admire her father even more.
An Undead who could elicit such politeness from the Elf Tribe was truly one of a kind in all the world.
Amberser was ushered into a serene small garden, where after almost two hours of waiting, he finally met Katherine.
The former Elf Queen was still as stunning and captivating as ever; even though her dress had become much simpler, she still had the power to move even the undead.
The naive Melina was so captivated that she couldn’t help blurting out, "Such a beautiful person."
Katherine had heard countless praises in her life, so she responded gracefully, "You are very beautiful too. My name is Katherine, may I ask what’s yours?"
"I... my name is Melina."
"What a lovely name."
Katherine took Melina’s hand and sat beside her next to Amberser. Melina, completely thrown by this gesture, lost all capacity for thought, her golden eyes capable of piercing through all hidden things started to turn pink.
Turning to Amberser, Melina said, "Father, she’s so beautiful!"
Amberser replied helplessly, "I know."
Melina wasn’t quite like a normal Undead in personal emotions; she was a bit sentimental, prone to depression due to her own perceived clumsiness, and her resistance to Katherine’s indiscriminate, overwhelming charm was far less than Amberser’s.
But what Melina said next left Amberser stunned.
Excitedly, she exclaimed, "Father, I want to marry her!"
"Ah?!"
"Ah?!"
The surprised exclamations of "Ah" came from both Amberser and Katherine, but Amberser was shocked at Melina’s terrifying statement. How dare she utter such an outrageous remark, which could provoke the Elven King to start a war with Gloomyland at any moment.
Katherine was not surprised by the proposal itself, having been confessed to by numerous people of all genders and even by her close childhood friends who had several times lost their composure. Such matters weren’t strange to her; what truly astonished her was Melina addressing Amberser as "father."
Good heavens, could a Lich have children?
Amberser quickly said to Melina, "Silly child, you’ve been charmed. Close your eyes, calm down."
Melina hesitated, but then did as Amberser instructed, closing her eyes and forcing herself to calm down. At that moment, the essence of being an Undead finally took over, and Melina realized what ludicrous things she had just said, immediately unsure of where to put her hands.
Fortunately, Amberser was there. He snapped his fingers, utterly enveloping Melina with an illusion to ensure she couldn’t see or hear anything.
Only then did Amberser speak to Katherine, "Let me give you some advice—wear a mask when you go out. It’s better for everyone."
Katherine was too excited to care about that, asking eagerly, "She is your daughter? Then who is her mother?"
"You’ve met her, the Rose Queen of Gloomyland," Amberser replied.
Katherine couldn’t help but press on, "The child is already so big, how long have you two been married? And you never told me?!"
Listening to Katherine’s tone, she sounded as if she had been deceived, her eyes revealing a sense of grievance.
Amberser felt his bones turn a bit soft, unable to withstand that look.
"Don’t be like that, it’s all a misunderstanding. I don’t have any special relationship with the Rose Queen, we just collaborated to create an undead, Melina. The Rose Queen created her body, and I was responsible for weaving her soul. So, technically, it’s not wrong to say she is our child, but we are definitely not husband and wife, please don’t get me added to Laine’s wanted list."
Withered Rose was ranked number one on Laine’s wanted list, and Amberser had finally gotten his name off that list. If Laine really considered him the husband of Withered Rose, the combination of old grudges and new would surely land him straight into the second spot on the wanted list.
Katherine dropped the pitiful act but still appeared a bit surprised.
"Do undead create children like this? What surname does Melina take then?"
"Of course she takes after her mother. Don’t be fooled by her silliness; she is the esteemed princess of Gloomyland."
"That’s not being silly, she might just be too naive. The more innocent and naive, the closer they are to me. She’s just not used to this feeling, so she mistook it for love."
Katherine spoke as if she were experienced, and Amberser quickly interrupted her. He wasn’t there to chat about such trivial matters.
"You’ve read my letter, right? About the divine position, what do the Elven Gods say?" asked Amberser.
Katherine also put away her joking expression. When she had received Amberser’s letter before, she was shocked—it was about a divine position, after all!
How long has it been, and Amberser is already slaughtering deities, and moreover, the Rose Spider Queen!
Every High Elf has grown up hearing from their parents, "If you don’t behave, the Rose Spider Queen will send spiders to capture you!"
It was no threat, nor was it a story. Mischievous children who ran around might genuinely be captured by Drow Elves and cruelly sacrificed.
Drow Elves were the archenemies of High Elves.
And Amberser had not only ensnared the Rose Spider Queen, but also stripped the most important divine position from the Drow Race.
If Katherine hadn’t met Amberser before, she definitely wouldn’t believe such a story, taking it for something made up by someone bored, attempting to get her attention.
But Amberser was different. Since Katherine had known him, although this Lich often lied, when it came to business, his bids were always something he could deliver, never spouting nonsense.
No matter the process, if Amberser said he had that divine position, then it was surely the truth.
Thus, Katherine immediately prayed to the Elven Gods, hoping for their response.
And soon enough, Katherine received a clear reply—it was true, they agreed to the trade, but with a different condition.
This signal was so unmistakable that compared to previous oracles, it could be considered blunt to the point of excess.
Therefore, after reporting the matter to the Elven King, Katherine didn’t stop for a moment and rushed to Flower Grace Town.
"The Deity is willing to trade with you, but the terms need to be changed," Katherine told Amberser.
Amberser said, "That doesn’t sound like good news."
Katherine was a bit embarrassed, indeed it wasn’t good news, but she could only convey the deity’s intentions: "Your first request is beyond the deity’s power to grant. You cannot be inducted into the pantheon of Elf Gods."
Amberser nodded, expecting as much beforehand.
A Lich joining the pantheon of Elf Gods was indeed preposterous.
"What about the deity’s protection, then? If they’re taking a divine position from me, they ought to give something in return, right?"
"That can be arranged, but the deity has stated it can only resolve the enmity from one other deity," Katherine replied.
"Only one?"
"Yes, after all, you’re surrendering only one divine position."
This news disappointed Amberser greatly. There were many deities he had offended. To speak of the recent, he had tricked the Rose Spider Queen, and Shael had her prize snatched by him. Going further back, the Goddess Lovieta bore him immortal enmity, and then there was the Evil Dragon Goddess Tiamat.
Just like that, there were already four, not to mention the Lord of the Dawn, the most troublesome adversary of all.
The combined might of the four evil goddesses might not be able to defeat the Lord of the Dawn, but even if Amberser managed to get the Elf Tribe to ensure the Lord of the Dawn wouldn’t bother him, the remaining four could still crush him to bits.
"The divine position of the Drow Race is of great significance to your Elf Tribe, isn’t it worth more than that?"
Amberser was not one to be easily fooled. Other divine positions might be accounted for in such a way, but the divine position of the Drow Race could possibly unite the divided Elf Tribe again into one big, loving family.
The offer from the Elven Gods seemed a bit like taking advantage.
"You’re right, but enmities between deities take countless years to resolve. The Deity is willing to intercept one measure of enmity for you, and that price is very high too," said Katherine.
Amberser, resigned, said, "You’re really insincere about this, I might as well give the divine position to Shael. It seems receiving this divine position would stop her from pursuing any claims against me."
Katherine hesitated, then replied, "I knew you wouldn’t agree. The Deity also provided a second option: If you can help me regain control of the entire Drow Elf Race, we will help you resolve the trouble with those four goddesses."
