Chapter 388.1: Slits Throat Gesture*

In the medical room of Shelter 404, Luo Hua lay on the scanning bed and opened his eyes to a silver-white ceiling. Trying to sit up, he found that the effects of the anesthesia had not yet worn off, rendering his body unresponsive.

Well, everything seemed normal, other than his left hand.

Feeling slightly strange, he couldn’t help but swallow a mouthful of saliva.

A strange voice came from the side. "Yo, you’re awake?"

Luo Hua slowly turned his neck to look at the unfamiliar man standing beside the bed. Just as he was about to ask where he was, he suddenly noticed the strands of hair-thin silver wires floating above the man's arm.

He recognized those items. They were scalpels used for minimally invasive surgery on neurons, commonly found on large medical devices used for prosthetic surgeries.

Only those obsessed to near-paranoia with technology from the Prosperity Era would incorporate such devices into bionic prosthetics.

Eventually, he squeezed out a question. "Are you from the Academy?"

"Yes, I'm the director here at the Shelter 404 branch," the man responded, humorously referencing a metaphor Chu Guang had used to ease the atmosphere. He then retracted the hair-thin tools into the interface on the inside of his forearm.

Looking at the man lying on the bed, he smiled lightly and continued, "Welcome to Shelter 404. Besides being the director of the Academy branch here, I'm also the head of the Scientific Expedition Team. By the way, the bionic organs on your body are quite interesting. I just opened them up for research; you wouldn't mind, right?"

Luo Hua responded helplessly. "... Does it matter if I mind?"

"Nope, it's already done," Yin Fang replied casually. "My name is Yin Fang. If anything goes wrong with your parts, come find me for repairs."

"I’m Luo Hua... Employee of the Enterprise’s Silver Wing Corporate Group." Luo Hua looked around with surprise after he spoke. "This... This is Shelter 404?"

Yin Fang's eyebrows raised slightly.

"That's right. Haven't you been here before?" Yin Fang asked.

"I have, but..."

I just don't remember this room.

Luo Hua stared blankly at the ceiling. Just then, he suddenly remembered something and immediately addressed Yin Fang standing by the bed.

"Where's your administrator?"

"Right outside. Should I call him in?"

Luo Hua nodded, just about to agree when the door to the medical room swung open.

A man and a woman entered.

The woman, with her silver hair, was also unfamiliar to him, but the man beside her was someone he recognized all too well.

"Chu Guang..."

Chu Guang smiled and nodded. "We meet again."

Compared to a year ago when they first met, the young man lying on the bed had aged considerably, his face bearing the marks of hardships endured. If it weren't for Yin Fang casually shaving off his beard, he would look even more abstract.

Excitement flickered in Luo Hua's eyes as he struggled to sit up from the bed, but Chu Guang raised his hand to stop him. "Don't get excited, you can talk while lying down. We finally woke you up, don't pass out again in the middle of our conversation."

Chu Guang smiled and asked with concern. "How are you feeling? Better?"

"Much better," Luo Hua swallowed once before blurting, "We found it!"

"Shelter 0?" Chu Guang asked thoughtfully.

"Yes!" Luo Hua said excitedly, "It's in the Great Desert... We found the entrance!"

"What does it look like?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?" Chu Guang looked at him in surprise. "Didn't you go in?"

Luo Hua's expression turned bitter. "To be precise, we almost got in."

"Because of the Army?" Chu Guang surmised.

Luo Hua nodded gravely. "We successfully located the coordinates of Shelter 0 and obtained the key to enter the shelter. It’s the one you’re holding.”

Chu Guang looked at the silver card in his hand and fell deep into thought.

After a pause, Luo Hua continued, "They're tougher than we thought. Although we have exoframes, they’re not weak either. Oasis No.2, which is the closest to the shelter, is under the dominion of the Falcon Kingdom."

"Faced with an overwhelming number of enemies, we had to abandon the Pioneer and some of us hid in temporary shelters near the base of the space elevator."

Chu Guang was taken aback. "... Space elevator?!"

"Yeah, didn't you know?" Luo Hua looked curiously at Chu Guang, who slowly nodded, allowing him to continue.

"The space elevator from the Federation Era is near the equator in the central of the Great Desert... It collapsed 200 years ago, and its debris is scattered across the Great Desert, with the furthest piece even reaching the East Coast. But that's not the important part. What’s important is that Shelter 0 is nearby!”

Taking a deep breath, he looked earnestly at Chu Guang. "Luyang... Our captain told me to head east at all costs, and to never let the Army get their hands on that card."

"That's our last hope to end all the suffering on this land."

Chu Guang pinched the bridge of his nose, taking a moment to process the enormous amount of information. "I'll do my best to help you, but the current situation is that the Army's airship have already arrived right under our noses. Without dealing with them, our people will have to make a big detour south to enter the Sunset Province... Do you have a way to contact the East Coast?"

Luo Hua's eyes filled with anxiety. "We've already reported the situation to the Enterprise, haven't they arrived yet?"

Chu Guang's expression became subtly complex. "They have, but there are only a little over 100 of them... Are you sure that's enough?"

Luo Hua was visibly stunned.

"Only 100?! How could there be so few of them?!"

As Luo Hua's eyes filled with increasing panic and disbelief, Chu Guang silently nodded and continued, "That's the reality. The 26th Assault Team that arrived is composed of just over 100 people, led by Yun Song. Although they have 20 exoframes, they are severely lacking in heavy weaponry... Honestly, I doubt that's enough."

That was one of the reasons he hadn't called those people back to help deal with the Heart of Steel. They wouldn’t be useful at all and it would be better to let them help on the western front.

What he needed was more substantial support.

Be it was weapons or technology, he wanted as much as he could get.

Luo Hua mumbled through gritted teeth, "A single assault team is definitely not enough! Not to mention the two 10,000-strong brigades the Army has deployed on the western side of Sunset Province. Just the standing army of the Falcon Kingdom alone is around 100,000 people! Even 20 exoframes can’t take down that many people.”

Chu Guang sighed. "I feel the same way."

Especially after seeing the capabilities of their 400mm main cannon... He was even more convinced of his opinion.

Honestly, he even wondered if something had gone wrong on the East Coast. Why else would they only send so few reinforcements?

Whatever it was, it was clearly not time to discuss those matters.

After a pause, Chu Guang asked, "Don't you guys have any large transport aircraft or airships?"

A grimace appeared on Luo Hua’s face. "We do, but just the distance here from the East Coast is almost 3,000 kilometers... That distance far exceeds the maximum range of our Electric Manta, our Enterprise's twin-engine transport aircraft."

The Electric Manta was capable of switching between fixed-wing flight and vertical takeoff and landing, with a maximum range of only 500 kilometers.

Otherwise, Yun Song and his men wouldn't have come on foot.

The Enterprise had only a single survivor settlement, Ideal City, and maintained only trade relations with other survivor settlements in the Among Cloud Province. There was neither a need for ultra-long-distance deployment and combat nor any overseas military bases, so they had never developed large aircraft technology.

Developing it now wasn't impossible either. With their advanced power and storage technologies, designing practical equipment wasn't too difficult for them.

However, whether they could catch up with the current crisis was another question.

Luo Hua fell into thought and spoke only after a long time. "Anyway, we must first find a way to contact the Enterprise... I must tell the people there about the situation here!"

Chu Guang raised an eyebrow. "Do you still have Migratory Bird?"

"That’s a big guy... How could I possibly carry it with me?" Luo Hua coughed dryly and continued, "But other than those... There is actually another emergency method of communication."

Chu Guang immediately asked. "What is it?"

Yin Fang, who had been silent up till now, suddenly interjected, "Is it orbital satellites again?"

Luo Hua looked surprised but still nodded slowly. "... How do you know?"

Yin Fang's face showed a strange smile, his tone carrying a subtle hint of sarcasm. "You're not the first to do this."

Chu Guang frowned slightly, not quite understanding.

"Orbital satellites? What do you mean? Isn't Earth orbit filled with space debris?"

"Exactly because the outer space orbit is filled with space debris, you can always find one or two things that are still usable, right?"

Dropping his arms, Yin Fang continued, "Just upload some data to a working satellite, then use the remaining fuel to guide the satellite to crash near the East Coast. Whoever picks up the satellite just needs a crowbar or an axe to crack it open like a coconut shell to see what's written inside. Only those fools would do something so stupid like burning pianos and cooking cranes.”

Chu Guang was taken aback.

The fuuuck? Can they even do something like that?

Not just Chu Guang, but Hyrja also looked dumbfounded.

Finally catching the sarcasm in Yin Fang’s voice, Luo Hua's face flushed as he spoke. "We're not using it to make phone calls; it's just for emergencies."

Chu Guang couldn't help but ask, "But why must the satellite fall? Can't it just act as a signal relay?"

Yin Fang shook his head. "You're thinking too simply. First of all, the satellites that can be used this way are not low-orbit communication satellites but rather a type of long-endurance, more reliable research satellites, which we usually refer to as... T-Series Satellites."

"These satellites are usually located in higher, broader geostationary orbits, maintaining a relative stationary position above the ground and only capable of communicating directly with the research facility below them. Moreover, the method of communication isn't radio but a narrower range of laser."

Chu Guang gasped. "Laser?!"

Yin Fang nodded and explained concisely, "Yes, when information needs to be exchanged, the ground research facility will shoot a beam of light up, and the satellite will shoot one down. You can think of it as trying to hit a coin-sized transmitter from 36,000 kilometers away with a handgun. This method of communication is very secure. Other than the research facility associated with the satellite, it's nearly impossible to contact it from anywhere else, much less know the exact coordinates of the satellite."

"Generally, if a ground communication base loses connection with the satellite, the satellite will enter a dormant state until it is awakened again. Therefore, theoretically, these satellites usually have some residual energy, and that energy is at least enough for one orbital change."

Chu Guang thought for a moment before wondering out loud, "So you just need to find a ground base that can communicate with this type of satellite, write the data into the satellite, and then guide it to crash..."

"Yes, so as I said, these guys are destroying their own cultural heritage. The way those people on the East Coast use relics from before the war can only be described as destructive! They don't understand what sustainable use means. Dropping a satellite worth tens of millions just to say hello, tsk..."
