Chapter 107: Worry too much

He Zeqing glanced at Song Chengfeng for a moment, hesitating before he spoke. Song Chengfeng, noticing how He Zeqing kept opening and closing his mouth but said nothing, finally asked, "What’s wrong?"

He took a brief glance at his friend before turning his attention back to Qi Jianyi, who was being pulled along by three teenagers.

He Zeqing fell into step beside him, finally deciding to speak. "Jianyi and I had a fight earlier. She was coughing a lot, and we were all really worried about her. So, don’t pay any attention to those three brats—just keep an eye on her."

As soon as He Zeqing mentioned Qi Jianyi’s condition, Song Chengfeng’s step faltered. His body stiffened, his concern evident. "Was it bad?" he asked, his voice tight with worry.

He Zeqing, oblivious to his friend’s discomfort, shook his head lightly. "She’s fine now. After a while, she felt better. But my family’s worried that she might faint or something."

"If you’re so worried about her, why didn’t any of you stop her from coming?" Song Chengfeng’s voice dropped, his anxiety no longer hidden.

He Zeqing paused, noticing that Song Chengfeng had stopped walking. He turned to face him. "Why are you so anxious? Do you really think we didn’t want to stop her from coming here? We did, but Jianyi hardly ever expresses interest in doing things like this. She suddenly said she wanted to go to the amusement park, and how could we stop her?"

It was clear that Qi Jianyi’s parents were just as worried as Song Chengfeng, if not more so. But they knew how independent their daughter was.

Qi Jianyi rarely asked her family to join her in anything, and her parents couldn’t bring themselves to stop her from enjoying a rare moment of freedom with her friends.

"You mentioned you two had a fight earlier. What happened?" Song Chengfeng, no longer dwelling on the previous topic, shifted back to the matter at hand.

His eyes once again found their target—Qi Jianyi—and remained there, filled with an emotion he couldn’t hide.

He Zeqing cleared his throat, trying to look away from Song Chengfeng. "Well, it’s because you told her what I said to your mom before. She got upset about that. Said I was overstepping my boundaries, and all that."

He stammered for a moment before speaking more honestly. "I guess I did push it a bit."

Song Chengfeng glared at him. "Well, she’s right."

He agreed with Qi Jianyi. Even though Song Chengfeng had wanted to shout his feelings for her to the whole world, everything had changed once he learned her secret.

Now, he no longer had the courage to openly declare his feelings. The more people knew about them, the more pressure Qi Jianyi would face, and he didn’t want to force her into a corner.

Of course, he still loved her, but he would never force her to accept him. Song Chengfeng refused to let himself become the reason Qi Jianyi would give up on finding her way home.

"Oh, how’s your mom?" He Zeqing, feeling guilty about the previous conversation, skillfully changed the subject.

"Don’t you know better than me?" Song Chengfeng replied shortly, his tone more neutral now.

Just as He Zeqing’s mother often sided with Song Chengfeng, his own mother did the same.

"Auntie almost cried that day. You’ve got to cut me some slack here," He Zeqing said, a touch of guilt in his voice.

"You could’ve just given her my address. No need to mention Jianyi," Song Chengfeng responded, understanding what his friend was trying to say but still feeling uncomfortable about He Zeqing discussing his love life.

"She asked me to go home," Song Chengfeng then murmured, almost inaudibly.

He Zeqing fell silent for a moment. He understood why his friend had left the way he did and why Mrs. Song was so concerned.

"Just tell your parents the truth, Chengfeng," He Zeqing said after a long pause, his tone more serious now. He glanced over at his brother and cousins before continuing, "The more you hide it, the more it’ll hurt them in the end."

His advice however didn’t manage to break through Song Chengfeng’s mind. He just listened to it but not take it to his heart. It’s impossible to tell his parents the truth.

Since he had already taken the blame as a soldier who committed crime, Song Chengfeng was willing to continue bearing the guilt till the end.

"Why bother? Nothing will change anyway." He said and fasten his pace to catch up with Qi Jianyi who turned to look at them.

He Zeqing shook his head and followed quietly. He couldn’t say more about Song Chengfeng’s life. After all, it was his decision and he wanted to live with it.

All He Zeqing could do was helping him keep the secret. Carry with him until the end.

"What are you two talking about? You look so serious." Qi Jianyi asked curiously when Song Chengfeng arrived beside her.

Song Chengfeng flashed a smile to her before answering, "he told me that you were coughing this afternoon." His words naturally laced with concerns.

Hearing his words, Qi Jianyi rolled her eyes at her cousin’s dramatic words. "It’s just a cough. I just accidentally choked on my own saliva. Why are you so worried about it?" She asked, raising her brows.

"Really?" Song Chengfeng’s face grew serious as he observed her expression closely.

trying to figure out whether she was telling the truth.

"Of course, why would I lie to you? Why don’t you trust me?" Qi Jianyi deliberately lower her tone and question him. Her eyes narrowed in dissatisfaction.

Noticed her displeasure, Song Chengfeng quickly said. "I’m just worried."

"I know..." she muttered.

Qi Jianyi knew just how much Song Chengfeng worried about her health. After all, everyone just think she’s not in a good health. Only he knew that her sickness was due to the body she inhabited rejecting her soul.

"But maybe, you’re just worry too much." She couldn’t help but say that. "I don’t like it when people see me like I’m kind of a fragile doll. So stop looking at me with those eyes."

Although she understood Song Chengfeng’s concern, she still didn’t like the way he looked at her—like he feared she would suddenly die one day, and he wouldn’t be able to catch her in time.

Reaching out, Qi Jianyi placed her hand on his arm. "I’m here, healthy and well," she reassured him.

She was here, right in front of him. Alive, and not about to disappear. She hoped that would ease his worries.

Understood the meaning behind her words, Song Chengfeng caught her hand on his arm and clasped it with her. Holding her hand tightly, as if to be assured that she was really by his side.

"Good, stay by my side. Lest those kids steal you away," he said playfully, shaking their tightly clasped hands.

At the moment, Song Chengfeng looked like a normal man who was in love. Playfully teasing his girlfriend. Far different than the usual aloof Young Master Song.

Qi Jianyi laughed at his words and nodded in agreement. "Alright, don’t let go of my hand. Or else someone else might steal me from you," she teased with a playful smile.

If others didn’t know any better, they might have thought the two of them were lovers. The way they teased each other playfully and exchanged sweet smiles, coupled with the gentle look in Song Chengfeng’s eyes, painted a picture that was hard to deny.

Adding to the scene was Qi Jianyi’s laughter, light and melodic, as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. No one would believe them if they claimed they weren’t a couple.

Meanwhile, He Zeqing, who had been completely forgotten in the background, noticed their tightly clasped hands. He snorted but refrained from saying anything, choosing instead to look away.

He had tried his best to stop Qi Jianyi from accepting his friend, yet seeing her willingly let Song Chengfeng hold her hand told him all he needed to know. It wouldn’t be long before their love fully blossomed.

Though he felt a pang of disappointment that his cousin hadn’t toughened her heart enough, He Zeqing could only sigh in resignation.

Inwardly, he lamented that his uncle’s precious "cabbage" was about to be picked by what he saw as a very undeserving "pig."

The three teenagers, brimming with excitement, were oblivious to the silent interactions unfolding between Qi Jianyi and Song Chengfeng. Even if they had noticed, they would have likely turned a blind eye to it.

He Zejin, for one, had no interest in stopping his cousin from dating anyone. As for the twins, they had long accepted Song Chengfeng as their future brother-in-law.

At this point, only He Zeqing and their father, Mr. Qi, remained firm in their opposition to Qi Jianyi accepting Song Chengfeng.

Though Mr. Qi no longer displayed the same open disdain and displeasure toward the young man as he once had, it was clear that he still disapproved. Perhaps deep down, he already knew his daughter was destined to be "abducted." He simply refused to acknowledge it.

"Sister, let’s go to the haunted house!" Qi Jinlu called out loudly, forcefully redirecting his sister’s attention away from Song Chengfeng.

Hearing his words, Qi Jianyi turned toward her brother and was about to reply, but another voice from behind her abruptly cut in.

"Changxin, let’s go to the haunted house! I’m not scared, so if you get scared later, you can hug me."

That familiar tone and those unmistakable words sent a jolt through Qi Jianyi’s body. She stiffened as her mind struggled to catch up, her body reacting on instinct. She turned sharply toward the voice’s owner.

"Xu Yichen?"
