The world has turned into Hell's Game, why should I stay human? -
Chapter 154: Does this thing look like the takeout you ordered?
Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Does this thing look like the takeout you ordered?
"Sir, may I help you with anything?"
A shop assistant approached.
She was wearing a green T-shirt with a large yellow sun pattern in the center.
And in the center of the sun was a photo of a human baby, sucking on a finger and smiling innocently.
This shop assistant was also human.
"I’d like to buy a pet human."
Liu Zheng spoke.
Hearing that he was there to buy a pet, the assistant seemed surprised.
She had thought Liu Zheng was there to deliver takeout.
But now that he was a customer, her smile became much more genuine immediately.
"Then you’ve come to the right place at ’Sunshine’ Pet Shop. We are a century-old store with our own independent breeding farm, focusing exclusively on breeding the highest quality pet humans."
The shop assistant said enthusiastically.
"Where is your breeding farm?"
Liu Zheng pulled out a map.
"What is this?"
The assistant looked at him with a skeptical eye.
"Oh, it’s like this, our employees at the Bloody Restaurant plan to bulk purchase some pet humans to help with work, so they sent me to scout on their behalf."
"This is the first time I’ve been tasked with such an important job, so I plan to check the breeding environment at your farm after seeing what you have here."
"If everything goes smoothly, you could become the long-term supplier for our Bloody Restaurant employees."
Liu Zheng said fluently.
As a journalist, the ability to concoct stories on the spot was a professional necessity.
"I see."
The shop assistant became even more eager.
The Bloody Restaurant’s reputation hardly needed explanation, even in the far-flung boundaries of Metropolis, it was notorious—no, rather, its fame was widespread.
Being chosen by the Bloody Restaurant is like having bad luck that lasts for generations.
But having the Bloody Restaurant as a client, that was indeed a lucrative deal.
Moreover, goods that many places wouldn’t dare to accept, the Bloody Restaurant would take without fault, without worrying about City Hall following up along the buyer’s trail.
It was the number one top-notch client.
"You are welcome to inspect our farm, our breeding site is at this location."
The shop assistant pointed vaguely on the map.
She still had some sense of confidentiality and did not disclose the exact location.
However, it didn’t matter, as Liu Zheng was just asking casually.
If he had the ability to stir up trouble at the breeding farm, then a rough direction was all he needed.
"If you want to go there, you can come to the shop and find me, I’ll personally take you there."
The shop assistant said attentively.
The other shop assistants all looked on with envy and jealousy.
Everyone knew how beneficial it would be to land such a big order, and how it could be like soaring to the heavens with a single leap.
Although they would get a share, it certainly wouldn’t be as much as the one who served the client first.
"What’s your name?"
"You can just call me Xiao Mei."
The shop assistant said sweetly, her voice much more coy than at the beginning.
"Oh, so you’re Xiao Mei."
Liu Zheng was somewhat surprised, having found the main character right from the start.
"Yes, sir, do you know me?"
"I don’t, but a colleague mentioned that there’s a shop assistant called Xiao Mei at ’Sunshine’ Pet Shop who’s very pretty. I thought he was pulling my leg, but it turns out it’s true."
He said seriously.
"You must be joking, sir, I’m not pretty at all."
Xiao Mei blushed.
"Do you want to grab a drink when you’re off work? In my car."
Liu Zheng pointed to the Ferrari outside and said.
"I get off a bit late, though."
Xiao Mei’s eyes were expressive.
"No problem, good things are worth the wait, and so are beautiful people."
He said with a smile.
"You are quite the talker. I get off at seven."
Xiao Mei’s smile widened.
"Okay."
As long as she could wait, Liu Zheng would definitely come to pick her up.
"By the way, do you have any particularly unruly pet humans here?"
He asked.
"No, all of our pet humans here have been bred through dozens of generations and are absolutely tame and loyal to their masters, at most just lively in personality."
The shop assistant became serious when talking about work.
"That’s quite impressive."
Liu Zheng praised, though his gaze grew colder.
With over a hundred years of history and a dozen generations of breeding, one could imagine how young these pet humans were when they were bred.
Even cases of indiscriminate and incestuous breeding would not be uncommon.
"However, I am looking for a few that are defiant, preferably those that dare to attack other pet humans, or even their masters. Do you have any?"
He inquired.
"I..."
Before Xiao Mei could finish, a wad of cash slid down into her neckline.
"What is this for? I’m not that kind of woman."
She said coyly.
"That’s the price for work, sentiment has its own price."
Liu Zheng whispered in her ear.
"What do you need those kind of pet humans for?"
The shop assistant whispered back.
"We’re planning to organize a human fighting competition, involving people from various departments. The betting pool will reach at least ten million; if you help me with this, you’ll definitely get your share."
The hot breath from his mouth made the shop assistant’s ear tingle.
Of course, it might also be the allure of the ten million betting pool.
"Then, follow me."
She led Liu Zheng to a locked room.
After facial recognition, the security lock automatically opened, and the shop assistant pulled Liu Zheng into the room.
Upon entering the room, he was hit by a stench.
In the dim light, several pairs of cold, bloodthirsty eyes watched them, like a pack of wolves ready to pounce on their prey.
Liu Zheng felt goosebumps rise, but inwardly he was very pleased.
Perfect, these were exactly the sort of eyes he was looking for.
The clerk turned on the light, and the room was instantly laid bare.
The sudden bright light stung the eyes of these pet humans who had never seen daylight, and the vast majority instinctively closed their eyes.
Only a girl, around twelve or thirteen years old, despite the tears in her eyes and her eyelids trembling constantly, still stared at them fiercely, her teeth grinding loudly.
"What’s with her?"
Liu Zheng pointed at the girl and asked.
"Oh, she was the star pet of this batch. Both her physical fitness and intelligence level were the best."
"But something went wrong along the way, and she fell seriously ill. After she recovered, her intelligence declined severely, and she became more like a wild beast than a human,"
said the clerk.
"Beast..."
He chewed on the word and nodded his head.
Liu Zheng had read a phrase in a book that he always thought was cool, but didn’t quite understand.
It wasn’t until he saw these pet humans that he truly grasped the true meaning of that phrase.
To lose humanity is to lose much; to lose animality is to lose everything.
"What’s her name?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"Pet humans for sale don’t have names; they are named only after being purchased by their owners. It’s the pleasure and the right of the customer."
"They only have numbers, and this young female’s number is AWM1997,"
said the clerk.
AWM, isn’t that the model of a sniper gun?
"Then your name will be Sniper Gun,"
Liu Zheng said.
"Are you going to buy her?"
"Yes, not just her, I’m going to buy all these pet humans."
His finger swept across all the cages, prompting a chorus of snarls.
"That won’t be cheap."
The clerk hesitated.
"How much?"
"Just this AWM1997 will cost a hundred thousand, and the others together will be around three hundred thousand,"
said the clerk.
"Why so expensive? Shouldn’t these be considered defective goods?"
Liu Zheng frowned.
"Handsome, it’s not just your Bloody Restaurant that holds human-fighting competitions."
The clerk cast a flirtatious glance at him.
"If you buy enough, we could even introduce you to the Metropolis Fighting League."
"I see,"
Liu Zheng suddenly realized.
No wonder the clerk believed him so easily; it turned out there was precedent.
"But with them all cooped up in cages, I can’t tell if there are any problems,"
he found an excuse.
"That’s easy to handle, just pay a deposit and I’ll let you inspect the merchandise,"
said the clerk.
"Then let’s start with ten thousand,"
Liu Zheng nodded.
"Ten thousand..."
The clerk hesitated.
Another stack of banknotes made its way down her neckline.
"That could work,"
she changed her tune.
"City Hall, City Hall, prepare the area for the goods inspection,"
the clerk said, picking up the walkie-talkie at her waist after collecting the ten thousand from Liu Zheng.
"City Hall received,"
came the answer from the walkie-talkie.
"Let’s go, we just need to wait in the lobby. These goods will be brought there soon,"
the clerk said.
"OK,"
Liu Zheng followed her back to the lobby and found it had completely transformed.
The front door was sealed with a huge iron plate, all the furnishings and pet cages had been moved away.
It was quite efficient.
The clerk pressed the walkie-talkie, and immediately, a bunch of iron barriers rose up around them, forming an octagonal cage.
She pressed it again, and the floor collapsed, with eight cages rising from underground containing the same pet humans they had just seen in the small room.
Pressing it one more time, the doors of the eight cages opened automatically, and the pet humans walked out.
Surprisingly, instead of attacking each other, they gathered around the girl at the center, looking coldly at Liu Zheng and the clerk.
"Why aren’t they fighting?"
He frowned and asked.
"These animals are very united; they only attack us. But it’s not a problem, just a little measure and they will become real beasts,"
said the clerk, about to press a button with a cold smile.
"Not so fast,"
he reached out to stop her.
"What’s wrong?"
The clerk looked at him, puzzled.
"I remember your name is Xiao Mei, isn’t it?"
Liu Zheng said.
"Yeah, you bad boy, did you forget someone’s name so soon?"
The clerk playfully scolded him.
"How could I forget such a lovely name?"
One of his tentacles quietly wrapped around her waist.
"I’m still at work here,"
the clerk verbally resisted, though her body didn’t seem to mind.
"I’m just pondering one thing,"
"What is it?"
She asked softly.
"Does this thing look like the takeout you ordered?"
Liu Zheng’s other tentacle held up a food container to her face.
"Ahh!!!"
The clerk let out a shriek that shook the earth, startling even the pet humans in the octagonal cage.
