The reason it fell to the fourth son was that, incredibly, Louis XI’s first three sons died one by one over the course of three days.

The eldest son of Frank perished because of a lethal poison administered over a personal vendetta, the second son succumbed to the Black Death, and the third prince contracted leprosy—a disease the Church declared to come from Hell—thus his right to the throne was revoked.

As a result, the fourth son of Louis XI, the one raised as a hostage by the Pope’s side, was surprisingly appointed as the Crown Prince of Frank by Innocent III and was crowned King of Frank beneath Heaven Mountain of the Church.

Because Louis XI had been kicked out of the Church and his remaining three sons had contracted leprosy.

Louis XI’s response was very decisive; he immediately had the head of the Frankish Church, Archbishop Lance, declare the Frankish Church independent from the Church, no longer subject to the Pope’s commands.

Subsequently, he began to loot with great avarice, the investments and industries of the Pope and the Red Bishop Group in the Kingdom of Frank, and banned the tithe, no longer channeling tax revenue to the Pope.

Since the Kingdom of Frank had already achieved centralization, the excommunication of Louis XI had virtually no impact on his own political influence within the country; it was only in terms of foreign affairs that the Kingdom of Frank suffered severe repercussions.
