Chapter 923: Chapter 477: Bipedal Dragon Knight Regiment and General Amnesty
Headed by the Minister of National Defense, Marcellino Bowman, the nobles, with a very humble attitude, invited Ivita to lead her troops into the city.
Even so, Ivita still ordered the King of the Ancient Tomb to dispatch a contingent of one hundred soldiers, including fifty first-level knights, as scouts, into the Alsace King City.
Although it was unlikely, it was still possible that this was a ruse by the enemy to lure her troops between the inner and outer city walls, to surround and annihilate her forces from both sides.
But wherever the scouts went, the demoralized Alsace officers ordered their soldiers to proactively surrender, discard their weapons, and back up against the city walls.
The King of the Ancient Tomb said to Ivita somewhat delightedly, "Your Majesty, they are sincerely surrendering. We need to send troops to take over the entire King City immediately."
The three Governors also looked joyous and happy; after all, this unexpected victory meant they could avoid a tough battle, surely making them overjoyed inside.
The Governor of Belisarius burst into laughter and said to Ivita respectfully, "Your Majesty, this is a tremendous victory. The day when you reign over Alsace is at hand. I suggest we hold a grand banquet inside the King City."
The Hearthstone Witch had been riding her broom in the sky, patrolling to ensure that Alsace’s famed air force, the Flying Dragon Knight Regiment, would not join the battle. Now, seeing the old nobles within the King City surrendering to Ivita, she also descended from the sky and said to Ivita, "Your Majesty, I don’t know why, but Alsace’s Flying Dragon Knight Regiment has not joined the battle, nor is there any sign of their Divine Locust Knight Regiment, and the Magma Knight Regiment has been stationed in the western territories of Alsace."
"Your Majesty must still be cautious, and your soldiers, after days of continuous fighting, are famished and thirsty, and must be rewarded; otherwise, it’s easy for unrest to arise among the troops. Furthermore, there are about eight thousand surrendering soldiers within the city, along with numerous ancient noble families observing the situation. Please make your decision, Your Majesty," the Hearthstone Witch reminded Ivita softly.
"Your Majesty, those who enjoy betrayal should definitely not be trusted again. Those who climbed the city walls to join Your side should be secretly killed, and it’s best to do it sooner rather than later," she whispered to Ivita. The Hearthstone Witch clearly could not trust her own kind.
But if Ivita were to really do as she said, in a few days, she would go from being a wise and returning king, to a tyrant who acts arbitrarily and capriciously.
In fact, this time as he attacked Alsace, he did not face the full resistance of Alsace’s nobles and army; even the Law turned a blind eye to him.
That is why he was able to so easily take over the King City.
If it were not for his identity as the heir to the Alsace royal family, the resources and difficulty required for him to take over this country might be more than ten times greater.
"The Divine Locust Knight Regiment is Alsace’s elite central cavalry troop that uses seeds of life from the Divine Locust born of Alsace’s Dragon Flame." Ivan explained simply, "The Flying Dragon Knight Regiment comes from the covenant set by the clad of Red Dragons that went to the void, using seeds of life from the ’Dragon Blood Sacred Grass,’ and they ride the Flying Dragons."
"All three major knight regiments of Alsace have a deep connection with my family, and are not merely knight regiments of the Alsace Kingdom. Their absence in the battle proves their stance," Ivan said.
Ivan continued, "The former Commander of the Imperial Guard was merely in control of a single Imperial Guard. He could not intervene with the three major knight regiments."
"So be it, you may enter the city, occupy the entire city, but do not harm the residents or nobles inside. I am only punishing the ringleaders this time, not those who followed them."
"The troops must not plunder the King City; those who violate this will be executed without mercy. However, I will reward them separately, with land and titles of nobility. As for foreign soldiers..."
"Gentlemen, I owe you a great deal for this time. Afterwards, I will grant prior access for goods from your three republics to enter Alsace, obtaining some trade privileges," Ivita said with a smile that was not quite a smile, as he looked at the three Governors. "This will be mutually beneficial, and from now on, the three esteemed republics will become allies with my family, jointly opposing the wicked Emperor Oros III."
"I will reward your troops with some of the national treasury’s money," he added.
In the classical era, it was quite normal for foreign soldiers to plunder allied cities; after all, if military troops were not properly controlled, they could immediately mutiny, even causing rebellion within their own countries.
Looting a few allied cities was a perfectly normal occurrence for them.
And Ivita could have simply rewarded his own soldiers and not the allied forces, but there was no need to be too stingy before the task was completed and the cake was made larger.
An army of soldiers without consolation is extremely prone to mutiny. With enemies on all sides, Ivita did not wish to lose three allies over some money.
The three Governors immediately assured Ivita that they would control their own troops and would not enter the King City; rather, they would station themselves outside the King City, awaiting Your Majesty’s reward.
The Governors also knew that when sharing spoils of war, it was often the time when allies turned on each other, as it’s relatively easier to share adversity than to share wealth.
So they were also nervous, carefully safeguarding their legitimate interests while also taking care of Ivita’s interests and emotions.
This was good for everyone involved.
As relationships require maintenance, the three Governors from The Three Republics had all been outstanding naval officers elected by their respective citizen assemblies before they set out, and the Senate had also instructed them to establish long-term and stable alliances with Ivita for the common purpose of opposing Emperor Oros III, signifying that The Three Republics were not merely out for opportunistic gains but were genuinely engaging in the promotion of republican values.
