Chapter 909: Chapter 470: Enthronement of the Iron Crown King and the Princess of the Oriental Empire

Ivita received the cheers of nearly everyone in the city along the way, mainly because he gave them money. In such a case, not keen on saving money anymore, Ivita spent freely to boost his political prestige.

Soon, with the support of General Antioch, he entered the banquet prepared by the Pope.

At the banquet held by Innocent II, many distinguished guests greeted Ivita. After some pleasantries, Innocent II soon met with Ivita.

Innocent II looked like a very kind old man, dressed in somewhat plain clothes and wearing the papal tiara, but his first words were very direct, "I finally meet you, Lord Ivita. So, are you willing to wage war against the heretic states for the God of All Things and The Church, to protect the sacred territory?"

During the banquet, many of the city’s senior nobles and young people were truly brainwashed by Ivita’s acting. They now looked at Ivita with fervent eyes, almost ready to answer on behalf of Ivita.

In their eyes, this was clearly another earnest cooperation before the divine communion, a holy promise.

But Ivita inwardly sneered. Innocent II truly deserved the submission and compromise of many law enforcers; this old man was too direct, leaving barely any room for evasion.

In this setting, one could not answer carelessly. If Ivita agreed to Innocent II, he would have to lead a holy war for the divine faith. Perhaps for the next Crusade, Innocent II would indeed come to seek out Ivita as the next leader of the Crusade.

Ivita noticed the serious Pope’s lips twitching slightly, immediately realizing that the Pope was asking this deliberately, to see his reaction, perhaps also revealing some of Innocent II’s personal character.

Innocent II looked at Ivita with interest, pondering his response as a spirit too young for his age. His question was both a test and a hope that Ivita would agree.

If Ivita were to lead another Crusade, it might not end in defeat.

The successive failures of the Crusades had severely damaged the devotion of the faithful and the ardor of the lords. People couldn’t help but wonder, why didn’t the God of All Things grant them victory?

Had they been abandoned?

However, Innocent II had been ruthless in suppressing heretics within his domain, having recently organized a bloody crusade against the southern Frankish heretics, successfully annihilating a sect that claimed the Trinity of the God of All Things, but in reality, believed in the existence of three separate gods.

Innocent II looked forward to and playfully watched Ivita, quietly waiting for his reaction. In fact, it didn’t matter if Ivita’s pilgrimage was a show, he too needed some uplifting events during this time.

Inside the Sacred City, the tolling of nineteen bells rang out, enough to compensate for the loss of faith from the last crusade’s failure. After all, the God of All Things had not shown any miracles in this world for quite a while, as if He had never existed at all.

And most of the gods had already departed to the Star Realm, with Mighty Divine Power seldom walking through the Dark Magic Forest, which was almost becoming the domain of atheists.

After pondering for a moment, Ivita cautiously assured the Pope, "Your Holiness Innocent II, I currently lack sufficient strength to defend my Lord’s holy territory and His flock. I still need salvation."

"My kingdom has been occupied by those devoid of any royal blood, and the nobles of Alsace let such things happen. Words of justice are suppressed by evil, and the light of faith is unable to penetrate into the Alsace Kingdom. Even the Empire has some voices preventing my lawful ascension to the throne."

Ivita glanced instinctively at the Hearthstone Witch behind him. For some reason, whenever he was about to spout nonsense, he liked to look at the Hearthstone Witch beside him, and the guilt in his heart would disappear.

It’s probably a contest of who’s worse.

Ivita continued, "If this world no longer cares for the law, then I could accept this outcome. Yet now, people ignore the law of succession, defy the dignity of God, and have driven away the God Chosen King—it’s irrational. These people even recently used servants stricken with the Black Death to attack me and the duchy I inherited."

"This is irrational!"

"But I still believe in justice because the light of the God of All Things covers the whole world, Your Holiness, I ask you to stand up for me."

The breaths in the hall all paused for a moment.

They all generally began to sympathize with Ivita. Before, they had not met Ivita and regarded the tales of throne usurpation as common occurrences. But now, they were immensely unsettled.

If such a devout and valiant king could not find fairness and justice in the Sacred City, then what did their faith amount to?

At the banquet, many highborn nobles of the Sacred City were outraged, and from their perspective, they could indeed empathize more with Ivita.

Some highborn nobles had even quietly sent servants to tell Ivita that they were prepared to donate wealth and hire mercenaries for him afterward.

And more people were whispering among themselves, the voices combining into an indelible surge.

"Yes, it’s absolutely unfair."

"The Church should respond to this, using the Black Death? Hmph, the current royal house of Alsace really is capable of anything. If such people continue to rule as king, then how should the history books record this period?"
