Chapter 857: Chapter 448: The King’s Weakness and The Emperor’s Fury

Eldorian, who had been despondent and convinced that all was lost for the day, now looked on at the scene with surprise and delight.

Eldorian said to Ivita, "Your Highness, they... they... have made fools of themselves, offending both the Republic and the noble class of the Republic."

"You don’t seem to be so surprised; could it be..."

Eldorian glanced around at the people nearby and modified what he was about to say, "It’s to be expected, as the envoys of the Empire have always been overbearing by habit, always distorting the truth. They tried to trouble you before at the mansion. It’s only natural for these people to commit such arrogant follies."

As a diplomat, he immediately began to capitalize on the resentment of the Republican nobles incited by the envoys of the Empire and Alsace, painting them in a negative light.

The Imperial Emperor’s Envoy, Akinuo Baros, now had a pallor worse than before; he realized what was happening and began to look for Gran Gre in the crowd, but he couldn’t find the man anywhere no matter how hard he searched.

Not being able to find Gran Gre made Akinuo Baros’s heart sink.

Gran Gre was an important member of the Republic Navy Committee; he should have been seated in a conspicuous place, but if he wasn’t present in the assembly square, there was only one reason — he couldn’t be there.

The assembly square allowed no magic or other supernatural forces.

It was only now that Akinuo Baros realized he had been deceived by a Gran Gre who had been manipulated by others.

As to who had manipulated Gran Gre, it was all too obvious.

Akinuo Baros turned his head to look at Ivita sitting in the viewing stands, feeling as if his blood was flowing backwards; he had been outplayed here.

He, an experienced diplomat and orator, born into a distinguished family of diplomatic affairs, a confidant of the Imperial Emperor, had been brought down by some problematic rumor.

He pointed at Ivita and said, "I must have been controlled by witchcraft, I swear by the God of All Things, honorable citizens of the great Republic, I must have been under the influence of witchcraft earlier."

Ivita remained composed, while Eldorian by his side scoffed, sensing that Akinuo Baros’s current behavior would only make him even less trustworthy in the eyes of the Republic’s nobles.

Under the spirit of the Republic, who could use magic without being detected?

Akinuo Baros’s actions amounted to the most shameful slander and instead helped Ivita gain more sympathy from the citizens of the Republic.

Sure enough, even though Ivita hadn’t spoken a word, the angered citizens of the Republic immediately condemned him, telling him to stop adding new crimes on the legitimate King of Alsace.

Furthermore, the public questioned all of Akinuo Baros’s earlier accusations against Ivita and Ivita’s father, considering the shameless liar’s words to be venom from a serpent.

Utterly unworthy of belief.

Yet, it was Miroslav Seks, the Chief Diplomat of Alsace, who delivered the final blow to Akinuo Baros; he suddenly lunged towards Ivita, then knelt with both legs, hugged Ivita’s shoes while sobbing and weeping, even kissing the tip of Ivita’s shoe.

Miroslav Seks quickly denounced, claiming that Henry VII had ascended through conspiracy, a thief without legitimate rights, just a wealthier man with considerable power, even if he occupied the King’s position.

Miroslav Seks, cunningly whitewashed Ivita once more, depicting Ivita as a Monarch wrongfully besmirched, stripped of his natural rights.

In the end, Miroslav Seks timely expressed his willingness to swear loyalty to Ivita anew and start from the bottom.

This only made the people of the Republic even more sympathetic towards Ivita.

Seeing how well this guy played along, Ivita nodded in agreement, promptly granting him a position managing a granary in Alsace.

Despite his disdain for opportunists.

But in public, encouraging such people who pledged their loyalty to him was helpful to sway those who were neutral and those potentially willing to side with him.

It was like the bid of a thousand gold for the loyalty of a horse.

However, Miroslav Seks’s defection completely stripped the Imperial Emperor’s Envoy Akinuo Baros of any room to maneuver.

The people of the Republic now generally began detesting that they had been deceived by the envoys of the Empire and Alsace and deeply empathized with Ivita.

Subsequently, Eldorian’s debate, which was of normal caliber, received cheers and applause from the entire hall.

Then, the assembly’s counters began the voting process.

Almost all votes went to Ivita’s side.

Akinuo Baros looked ashen as he barely returned to his seat with the support of an attendant; he didn’t even dare to look at Ivita anymore.

Ivita had clearly become his personal demon.

The counting voices echoed in his ears.

"One more vote for Prince Ivita, and another vote for Prince Ivita..."

"This vote also goes to Prince Ivita!"

"The total count is 451 votes in support of Prince Ivita, 36 abstentions, with only 2 votes supporting the Empire and Alsace."

"Ha, there are actually two hundred people supporting the Empire and Alsace. But it can’t be helped; with such a large number, there are bound to be some outliers."
