Chapter 820: Chapter 431: The Four Kingdoms Controlled by the Church

On the city walls, the defensive engineer from the Republic of Belisarius, Achilles, looked at the ancient god below in shock. Appearing like a moving mountain range, the ancient god plunged all the militiamen into despair and dismay.

Achilles, with his hands propped on the city wall, said, "How can there be something so massive in this world? What use are our city walls with it in existence? It could step over with a single foot!"

The mayor of the thirteen autonomous states became serious on the city walls. "That seems to be an ancient spirit that once enslaved primitive humans, a god of other humanoid intelligent lifeforms. Although its spirituality is astonishing now, it doesn’t seem too outrageous. It appears that the nobles are not daring enough to unleash its power."

"If we can send some cannon fodder to battle it and test the ancient god’s strength, I can come up with a method to subdue it."

Ivita, with an imperceptible tone, said to the mayor who looked middle-aged, with a square face and a more righteous appearance, "Then, who shall we send to be that cannon fodder?"

"Every movement of the ancient god causes an earthquake; ordinary people don’t have the courage for that."

The mayor friendly said to the giant Ivita, "Mr. Ivita, you’re a giant from the north, so it’s normal you don’t know about our human society’s affairs. With bountiful rewards, even a beggar would overcome their fear."

"Testing the enemy doesn’t require very powerful forces, commoners will suffice. Let Ambros City Council approve the use of death row inmates in combat. If that’s not enough, we can offer a reward to seek volunteers willing to make sacrifices for the collective."

Achilles curiously asked, "Why not send soldiers?"

Ivita said, "If we lose too many soldiers, the noble factions would achieve their goal."

The mayor, looking at the giant Ivita with a smile and some admiration, said, "You are completely different from any other giant I’ve met, and that’s the truth."

"We cannot lose too many troops; let the civilians within Ambros City serve as cannon fodder. In fact, the same applies to war. Those who act as the vanguard and rush to the front line are not our elite soldiers but often merely moderately trained militiamen."

Ivita gave him a sidelong glance.

Although appearing amiable and polite to everyone, the mayor of the Independent States Confederation seemed to be a very frightening person.

But that made sense; among so many candidates, the one with the most votes is either a true saint or a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Still, even a wolf in sheep’s clothing wouldn’t dare to show their true face, which is always better than the nobles who act unbridled.

The mayor said a word to Achilles and the giant Ivita before hurriedly walking away, likely to suggest to the City Council the plan he had just come up with.

Below the city, the ancient god toad obliterated over a thousand desert soldiers in an extremely brief time; moreover, a large number of city faction troops attempting a counterattack below suffered over a thousand casualties within a short period.

These thousand-plus people came from the Independent States Confederation, from the Ambros Local Troops, from The Three Republics, and from the support of several other Republican city-states.

Envoys and city council members from various nations were almost heartbroken.

Some mid-level officials even began to question the City Council. The City Council, unlike the nobility, could be reformed; if there were too many failures and the situation was too dire, the civilians within the city would create disturbances and protest, suggesting that the City Council hold new elections and reshuffle.

The giant Ivita and many others noticed that among those causing trouble in Ambros City, some simply did not seem normal; it appeared they were causing trouble for the sake of it, rather than having genuine dissatisfaction with the City Council.

Ivita realized what sort of people these were.

They were probably already bribed by nobles from outside the city or were actually members of noble factions who had sneaked into Ambros City under the guise of visiting relatives and friends.

However, this was not significant.

Soon, Ivita saw the city guard arriving to check whether those causing trouble had proof of residence in Ambros.

One by one, spies mixed within them were caught.

But these were just minor details.

Ivita saw the giant ancient god toad rampaging outside the city; all the cannon fire that fell upon it was like a light drizzle, having no effect whatsoever.

Only high-level knights and witches with their magic and arrows could inflict wounds on it.

If it were more obedient, the city walls would have been pushed over by it long ago.

While letting his two avatars continue to collect purple qi from the battlefield, Ivita observed the ancient god toad. With the help of The Eye of the Demon, the toad’s spiritual level was visible, roughly at the fourth level.

But far beyond a typical fourth level.

It seemed extremely hungry and weak, with many magics within suppressing it and countless iron chains binding it, allowing movement only in certain directions.

Yet the ancient god toad was unwilling to be enslaved by humans, whom it had once regarded as food and ants, and thus it resisted fiercely. Even as hundreds of human strongmen whipped it with iron lashes, it shook its body, refusing to move forward.

The ancient god toad lifted its amphibian foot, stomping a group of soldiers to death, regardless of whether they were from the city factions or the noble factions.
