Chapter 737: Chapter 391: The Inheritance Law of Ancient Civilization_1

Ivita, the Hearthstone Witch, and others crossed the land border again and entered the Lombardy Duchy. However, due to the chaos in the Lombardy Duchy, even the soldiers who should have been stationed at the border were no more.

Therefore, they were free to enter and leave the country.

Not long after they entered the Lombardy Duchy, Ivita and her companions somehow ended up in a desert, which was very odd considering that Lombardy is primarily a mountainous country.

And yet, they found themselves in a massive desert region.

The Hearthstone Witch sensed a strange surge of magical power flowing through the arid air. "There’s potent magic in the air in this desert."

"Even the regular areas in the Magic Black Forest pale in comparison..."

Ivita asked, "Is this due to an inherent quality of the Lombardy Duchy, or has something caused this transformation?"

Knight Robinson murmured, "I once read in the church archives that 300 years ago, the Lombardy Duchy experienced the largest upheaval in its history. It’s very likely related to this."

"That insurrection transformed the Kingdom of Lombardy into the Lombardy Duchy, turning fertile lands into a desert. The corpses that should have been under the control of the Iron Crown began to break free, falling under the control of a figure known as the King of the Ancient Tomb—a member of Lombardy’s original royal lineage."

Ivita frowned. "The King of the Ancient Tomb?"

"Indeed, my lord," Robinson replied. "He was a renegade, a former member of the Lombardy royal family who should have obeyed the Iron Crown. But he was different, causing problems for the Iron Crown Law."

"Before his official ascension ceremony, the King of the Ancient Tomb died mysteriously. His brother, the Iron King, ascended the throne and even took his wife."

"The King of the Ancient Tomb, the original ruler, did not obey the Iron Crown even in death. His uncomfortable position introduced chaos into the Iron Crown Law. The King of the Ancient Tomb sought justice for the souls enslaved by the law and attempted to overthrow the Iron King. As a result, the Duchy of Lombardy lost two-thirds of its territory due to civil unrest. Those territories have since become numerous small republics and monarchies."

Ivita nodded in understanding. "So, the Iron Crown must also have its grievances. Because that rebellion significantly reduced its influence. Could it be that the events unfolding now are a continuation of the chaos created by the King of the Ancient Tomb?"

Robinson shrugged. "That remains to be seen."

"The victor is the king, and the loser, a bandit," said the Hearthstone Witch, pointing ahead. "It seems there are people ahead."

"No, monsters?"

Ivita looked up to see a group of grotesquely deformed corpses approaching, killing any living creature in sight, even ripping apart a rabbit from an oasis.

They varied in deformities but primarily featured shriveled left hands, enlarged right hands, elephantine legs, and bodies seemingly enhanced to be 1.5 times the size of an average adult male.

They also had a vine bearing red fruits tangled around their shoulders.

As they passed by Ivita and the others, Ivita braced for an attack but the deformed corpses simply walked past as if they hadn’t noticed them.

Ivita and her companions were at a loss.

The deformed corpses muttered, "Kill the traitors, search for the traitors."

"Protect the Iron Crown and its heirs."

"Kill the traitors..."

Robinson stowed his knight sword. "It seems these are the walking dead controlled by the Iron Crown. They didn’t attack us, perhaps because you, my lord, are one of the heirs to the Iron Crown."

"Perhaps we won’t need to worry about attacks from the walking dead controlled by the Iron Crown on our journey."

Ivita nodded. "But we can’t let our guard down. Given the complexity of the situation here, we can’t predict what might happen. Let’s keep moving."

On the road, they were attacked several times by desert insects. But whenever they emerged from the sand, Robinson, powered by Evil Qi and wielding his Sword Power, reduced them to corpses.

A marksman from the plains kept a close eye on the horizon, shooting any possible enemy in sight.

And elite rangers and a priest stayed close to Ivita to protect him.

The strategy neglected the Hearthstone Witch, which seemed to suit her fine, given her disinterest in being protected by a bunch from the church.

Ivita said, "It seems the insect tribes of the Chaos Abyss didn’t lie. Indeed, there are mysterious forces targeting the Iron Crown and its heirs with the plan of destroying the Iron Crown. This has forced the Iron Crown to abandon controlling the country with law and to use walking dead to protect itself."

"However, it’s unknown who is causing trouble behind the scenes. This force is also our enemy, and we may encounter many enemies on our journey to the Iron Crown Mountains."

Robinson said to Ivita, "Given the current situation, it seems that the King of the Ancient Tomb has resurrected too. If the Iron Crown only wants to protect itself, why stir up chaos and bring back all their old enemies in the land?"
