"In other words, learning the Skeleton King Transformation Skill means you possess the power to nullify any attack, regardless of its strength,"
Ivita raised his brows at this. "I’m intrigued," he said.
The Moonlight Great Witch said to him, "This magic book is extremely precious. It comes from the treasure trove of the Flame Witch Wraith Great Lord, who occupies the supreme throne in the north. It’s a gem among medium-level magic."
"According to the market value, it won’t be too much to sell it for as much as fifteen hundred gold pounds."
Ivita frowned and looked at the Hearthstone Witch. Breaking her silence, she whispered to Ivita, "She seems to fear you, so the price she’s offering is quite reasonable. This kind of magic book is indeed several times more expensive than an ordinary one."
"She could add another five hundred to one thousand gold pounds to the price."
Ivita nodded. "There are six hundred gold pounds in the small bag on the floor. I’ll have my soldiers bring the rest of the money to the market for you tomorrow."
The Moonlight Great Witch’s expression softened a bit as she saw that Ivita truly wanted to strike a deal.
"Thanks to you, my lord," she said.
This was a major deal in the market, and as the organizer, she couldn’t help but feel pleased.
After completing the transaction, her relationship with Ivita seemed stronger. "But Lord Ivita, your demand for tax... it’s a bit overbearing. We’re merely borrowing this land."
Ivita knew that forcing these witches to pay taxes would leave him labeled as a tyrant.
Even if he could defeat and kill all these witches and wolfmen, he couldn’t forcibly tax them. If they were all his puppets, the point of taxes would be lost. There would be no difference whether they paid or not.
Mainstream society had never taxed a witches’ assembly. If Ivita suddenly imposed taxes, he would only drive the witches away instead of keeping them here.
This went against his wishes.
Caught a bit off guard, Ivita said, "No taxes, then. That puts me in a difficult position. However..."
"Hmm... there could be a compromise."
"You could stay here without moving, and you won’t need to pay taxes. I would even send soldiers to protect you if the market were in danger."
The Moonlight Great Witch and all the other witches and wolfmen were stunned at this.
They thought Ivita was using taxes as a pretense to get some benefits from them, but he was actually trying to keep them here.
The Moonlight Great Witch gave a keen look. "I have operated here for years and won’t leave this place lightly. But a market depends on mutual consent. As I’m sure Lord Ivita understands, no forced deals last long."
"Now that a strong Earl has taken over this territory, we simply have to leave."
Ivita nodded, standing his ground and not showing any signs of backing down. "I understand. However, this applies only if the new lord follows traditional practices. I’m different. I am a wizard lord. I am part of you. Our deal just now proved it."
"Under my rules."
"I might even give you more security and freedom, as long as you don’t violate the laws of my territory. If you witches and wolfmen defy the laws I set, you will be punished by my court just like anyone else."
The witches and the Moonlight Great Witch murmured among themselves.
They were attracted to the future that Ivita described, where the market transactions would be secure, something that the Moonlight Great Witch and the others had always pursued. But they couldn’t prevent the witches and wolfmen from secretly killing others.
However, there was now a more powerful wizard lord offering protection for the market.
This was beneficial for them, too.
They found no reason to decline.
But they still didn’t quite trust Ivita.
After some discussion, the Moonlight Great Witch said to Ivita, "Lord, we can promise to stay here temporarily, but we can’t guarantee our permanent residency."
"After discussing among ourselves, we have decided to stay here and observe for the time being. However, since you’re offering protection to the market, how much transaction tax are you going to levy?"
Ivita waved his hand. "One sixtieth."
"This tax is half of the lowest business tax. It should suit you. Because I promise that our market will prosper more in the future and it will be safer. However, I have to set up a security committee in the market to oversee its safety and the legality of the transactions."
The Moonlight Great Witch’s expression changed several times.
Ivita’s words meant he was stepping into their market affairs.
But after considering it, the Moonlight Great Witch thought that with Lord Ivita’s help their market might expand even more and become the largest gathering place for witches on the whole island.
Wasn’t this in line with her ambition to grow the market?
Perhaps agreeing to Ivita’s request was the right decision.
After much consideration, the Moonlight Great Witch finally nodded at Ivita. Mostly because Ivita’s current influence was too strong, and she had nowhere to flee.
Cross Island was not vast. Wherever she went, Ivita could influence the local lords to issue expulsion orders against her.
