Chapter 311: Chapter 200 Ivita’s Lord Order_3

For the knights currently following Ivita, he had granted them lands, to secure their loyalty to him.

In essence, he was using land as a replacement for money, to pay them their dues.

In other words, during this process, land was being treated as a form of currency.

However, if pure currency was used for employment, the price offered by Ivita was on the lower side, with a high chance of attracting hardly any professionals.

The act of recruiting professionals was not really feasible for a Baron’s territory unless there was a substantial wealth brought by ironcast trading. Ivita wouldn’t dare to be so extravagant otherwise.

The butler seemed to understand this, expressing some difficulties, "These conditions may not be that attractive to professionals."

Ivita said to the butler, "You can also announce that I have a piece of territory overseas that is occupied by pirates. The recruitment this time is intended to assemble an army to reclaim my overseas territories."

"So, they have the chance to be granted land."

When the butler heard this, although doubting how Lord Ivita got yet another overseas territory, he was still excitedly said, "With this condition, even official Knights may be recruited. The conditions are very generous."

The Knights always yearned to establish military merits in order to be granted land.

The terms offered by Ivita, though akin to a pie in the sky, were so tempting - round and fragrant, enough to make one lose oneself in it.

No Knight could resist this lure.

In an era where the commodity economy was not very developed, land was the most valuable asset and the most expensive currency.

He was assured to recruit quite a few professionals just by saying this.

But Ivita was not exactly deceiving them.

Although expanding the city guard was largely a precaution against the war with the Graveyard and Ambros, it was also in preparation for leading an army to Cross Island, held by pirates, to reclaim the viscount’s territory that Milani had transferred to him.

Ivita said to the butler, "Moreover, you can recruit some young and strong men from within and outside of our territory, as normal soldiers. Their salary will be four gold pounds and twelve shillings a year."

"Approximately, recruit two hundred more people."

"Later, I will give you a few Lord’s orders with my signature."

Ivita had originally planned to go and see his new castle, but with so many things to do now, he instead decided to first return to his study and work on the signatures.

The butler measured the situation in his heart, the price Ivita offered for ordinary soldiers was quite higher than the standard rate.

The usual price set by other lords for soldiers was around two and a half to three gold pounds a year.

This was roughly equivalent to the annual salary of a young skilled worker, which was considered above average income among local civilians.

Of course, being a soldier had other extra income as well.

Ivita glanced at the butler and said, "I just want to give more money to these ordinary soldiers so that I can manage them with strict orders and make sure they don’t harm any of our civilians."

"If I don’t improve their wages and make them cherish their current positions, no matter how severe the orders I issue, the results wouldn’t be great."

The butler had an epiphany and showed his admiration.

Ivita walked into the castle, advanced to the second floor, reached his study, picked up a pile of documents and started to work.

After signing a large bunch of documents and letting the servant take them to the butler, he began to study the Magic Book of the Cloak of Destruction. When he had tried to learn this magic before, he realised he always got some detail wrong no matter what he did.

At that time, he knew he might have gone wrong, so he didn’t force himself to continue practicing.

"Pan God, Hearthstone Witch, and Ice Witch should be back soon. I can use the name of the alliance to ask them to consult for me," Ivita thought to himself. "The spell Milani gave me should be fine, but why is there always an inexplicable resistance?"

With the impending war, he had to learn at least one defensive spell.

Ideally, this defensive spell would be a bit stronger so that he could protect himself well.
