Chapter 269: Chapter 181: Ashen Man and the Mysterious Ball (4292)_2

Ivita raised her eyebrows and, helpless, decided to go with the flow, casually pulling out an orange cat mask from his chest.

He instructed the coachman to wait outside the ballroom, then he himself stepped inside. It seemed that there were servants specifically assigned to welcome nobles like him. Upon seeing Ivita’s arrival, they instantly approached, leading him to the designated location.

The servant behaved submissively towards Ivita. "Please follow me, sir."

Ivita followed him through the lawn, past a few buildings, and finally arrived at a lavishly decorated space. Many young men were dancing with ladies there. On the side of the room, a line of musicians were playing their flutes, accordions, and other instruments.

Sitting in the main seat was a middle-aged man, probably the chairman of the city’s Weaving Workers’ Guild, and next to him was a young girl who hadn’t put on her mask yet, her head humbly lowered and her lips slightly bitten.

Presumably, she was Jenny, the cursed girl.

If she didn’t get married before turning fourteen, she could only look forward to marrying a beast.

Under the servant’s guidance, Ivita smoothly mingled in. He casually found a seat and began to eat fruits such as grapes and watermelon, huddled alone in a corner.

In the crowd, Ivita was trying to find Boots Cat and, out of curiosity, the envoy who came here intending to help Viscount Winchester arrange his marriage with Jenny.

At that point, Ivita, with his extraordinary hearing, overheard the conversation between the two people at the main seat.

Something about their discussion seemed strange.

Jenny’s father, the chairman of the Weaving Workers’ Guild, stated, "Don’t you seem happy?"

"Look at the aristocrats below. Each one of them is either unmarried or a widowed noble or tycoon. They are all here for you," he continued.

"If you fancy them, you can simply put on your mask, descend, lightly hold their hand, and boldly declare your interest in them."

Jenny drooped her eyelids, appearing displeased and tired.

"But father, you know, this is not what I want," she said.

The Chairman looked annoyed, "Then what do you want?"

"But father, they’re only interested in your wealth," Jenny sighed. "They do not like me; they are only attracted to my money. Whether I’m ugly or beautiful doesn’t matter to them."

"Even if I were a hideous creature, they would still marry me without hesitation, simply because I’m your only daughter."

"To them, I mean nothing, I have no value."

The Chairman hastily grabbed his daughter’s hand. "You are not worthless. To me, you are a princess. Moreover, everyone in this city likes you. You are friendly, generous, and every beggar in the city has received help from you."

"Dear Jenny, I may not have a position like a duke or king, but your behavior is far more noble than those princesses."

Jenny seemed agitated. "Father, there is one person who sees my value, he..."

The Chairman glared at her coldly. "So far, I have spent tens of thousands of gold pounds just to find you a good match. Today is our best opportunity. Look at the man in the leopard mask and the colored dress. He is the envoy of Viscount Winchester. I think he’s quite good."

"If you’re not moved by power, that’s fine. Looking at the guest list from today, many young and handsome lords have arrived, including some guests who are around the same age as you and hold the title of a baron."

He handed the list to Jenny, whose mind seemed to drift as she flipped through it.

"If you do not make a decision, I will have to take it upon myself to choose for you. If you still don’t feel moved, then I will have to personally select the Viscount Winchester for you," declared the Chairman, gazing at his daughter ominously.

With tears welling up in her eyes, Jenny responded, "I’m sorry, I really can’t do this."

From the corner, Ivita pondered on the peculiar situation between the father and daughter.

The girl named Jenny seemed to have some hidden affairs, as she’s reluctant to choose a partner.

Ivita did notice Kristin around the father-daughter duo...

Unexpectedly, he could spot Kristin at this masquerade ball.

Kristin apparently noticed him too. However, she merely glanced over at him while continuing to enjoy her fruit.

Ivita realized, she was also at this ball doing similar things, seemingly forced to be here for some purpose like him.

Yet he was not certain of her intentions.

As he had suspected, this ball was rife with undercurrents.

Suddenly, a nobleman wearing a leopard mask approached him. From the previous conversation, Ivita learnt that this man was supposed to be the envoy of Viscount Winchester. As the man walked up to him, Ivita tensed up, suspecting that the envoy was here to trouble him.

After all, he had rejected Winchester’s solicitations on multiple occasions.

However, as the man approached, he lifted his mask revealing a young, handsome but frivolous face; it was Baron Taketick.

Baron Taketick said, "Ivita, my friend, I didn’t expect to see you here."

Ivita looked at him with a strange expression, "How did you recognize me?"
