Chapter 254: Chapter 174: The Ice Witch and United Magic_1

Ivita stood next to the decrepit walls on the second floor, wondering why the old witch hadn’t noticed anything suspicious. But upon further thought, it seemed usual for her not to venture to the second floor.

She must have realized that there was an intruder, but instead chose to hide.

Ivita said to Pan God, "It appears you know a lot about the origin of the Boots Cat."

"How about you enlighten us, so we can be ready."

"I would like to know its background; if you also know its weakness, even better."

Milani and Francesca turned to look at Pan God.

Pan God sighed, "This is a saddening and regrettable tale."

"Centuries ago, Boots Cat was just an ordinary black and white calf. It was adopted by an old man as a stray. The old man had four sons. Three of them were grown up, and the fourth was small."

"During his lifetime, the old man had quite an amount of wealth and lands, so before he died, he decided to distribute his inheritance fairly amongst his four sons."

Ivita raised an eyebrow, surprised.

Milani interrupted, "That can’t be. Pan, you’re saying Boots Cat was once just a normal cat, but how is that possible!"

"An ordinary cat could not possibly live for centuries in time and do whatever it pleases."

Pan God ignored Milani’s protest, "My dear, nothing is impossible in the Magic Black Forest."

"You ought to be cautious before uttering such remarks again. In any other world, this wouldn’t be a problem, but in the Magic Black Forest, you are deeply mistaken, and it could bring you incredibly bad luck."

"The first rule of the Magic Black Forest is--nothing is impossible."

Milani was left stunned, staring at Pan God, unsure whether what he said was true or not.

Ivita told Pan God, "Please continue. Tell us how the calf cat transformed into today’s Boots Cat."

Pan God nodded, stepped closer to Ivita, and continued, "The old man was soon to die, he had four sons, and if all his assets were passed on to a single son, he would become rich."

"But if the assets were divided into four, then all his sons would struggle for living."

"So, every son wanted to take possession of the old man’s wealth. The man also understood this point before he died, and he gave his title and lands on Cross Island, a knight’s territory, and a small manor to his eldest son. He gave some assets in the Florcana Republic to his second son, his wife’s dowry—a fleet in the Republic of Belisarius—to his third son but when it came to his fourth son, he had no property left."

"All he had left was the calf cat with him."

Milani took a deep breath, growing impatient. If the story wasn’t about Pan, she wouldn’t have bothered.

On the other hand, Francesca Guila, the elder of the cemetery, was intently listening to the historical tale told by Pan God, this living fossil.

If she knew the origin of the Boots Cat, she could formulate a plan, or even a spell against it.

Francesca guessed that Boots Cat could be a magical creature transformed by spells. If she could inspect the spell, she might even be able to control Boots Cat with magic.

Ivita questioned Pan God with puzzlement, "This old man is tremendously unfair. He gave the eldest son a territory, manor, and title, gave the second son the means of livelihood, gave the third son a whole fleet, but only intended to give the youngest son an ordinary calf cat."

Milani added, "In my view, not only is the calf cat not worth a penny, it also eats a lot."

Ivita pondered, "So did the old man know that this calf cat was special and deliberately left it for the youngest?"

Pan God pointed at Ivita and said, "Well said, Ivita. You hit the nail on the head."

"You’ve guessed the truth."

"But this truth actually resulted in more unfair treatment for the youngest son."

"In fact, the old man had adopted the kitten long ago, and named it Cole Elliot. He even granted his own family name to a cat and obtained the agreement of the noble law. As for how he circumvented the noble law, I won’t enter into those details."

"The old man considered the kitten as his adopted son, thinking it was his youngest son, his fifth son."

"He entrusted the calf cat to his youngest son because he was the kindest and most filial, so he needed the youngest son to protect the calf."

"So, this calf cat was not an inheritance, instead it was a liability."

Ivita nodded.

The nobility of this era rarely encountered problems like the old man in Pan God’s story.

This could be called the trouble of having many sons, a Versailles-like trouble.

Due to the God of All Things and The Church’s influence, monogamy was the prominent practice, so fascile, the nobility was more worried about not producing a male heir to continue the family business.

Who would have thought the old man surprisingly had four sons.

However, the old man indeed treated his youngest cruelly; not only did he not give him an inheritance, but he also entrusted him with the care of a kitten.

Pan God said, "Before his death, the old man found the Black Rose Fairy ..."

Upon hearing about the Black Rose Fairy, Milani looked at Pan God in surprise.
