Chapter 210: Chapter 149: Witch Cemetery (4122)_1

At the castle gate, Ivita noticed that the equipment of the soldiers she had sent was still intact, immediately making her breathe a sigh of relief.

If the enemy had managed to take the equipment, it would have resulted in a substantial loss of money for her.

Confused, Ivita asked, "You were fighting mere citizens of a town, how could you have failed?"

"A small town should not have access to Alien Flora and a Knight’s Secret Medicine."

"There shouldn’t have been any knights in that little town."

The Knight Griffin wore a bitter smile. "My lady, there was more than one witch in that town, although indeed they did not dare to confront us directly."

"They only warmly invited us for dinner at their home. We accepted their invite, still on our guard. However, unbeknownst to us, they put something into our meals. Everyone who ate started feeling incredibly drowsy."

"Even if we weren’t unconscious, it was impossible for us to fight with full force."

The Knight Griffin complained in grievance, "We forgot that they were not nobles, so they didn’t have to abide by the noble law."

"Even if we ate their food, they were not required to abide by the nobleman’s law for treating guests."

Listening to this, the Old Witch paced back and forth at the castle gate. Suddenly, she told Ivita, "It was the Sleeping Curse."

"They must have put the Sleeping Curse in water, then used that water for cooking."

"There must be at least one formal witch in the town."

Ivita nodded at the Old Witch, her knowledge as the Hearthstone Witch was indeed extensive.

Ivita inquiringly asked the second question. "With that being the case, how were you able to escape after being affected by the Sleeping Curse?"

The Knight Griffin and several young men seemed somewhat ashamed.

Seeing the young men not responding, the Knight Griffin resorted to speaking himself, "We were quite lucky. The town was celebrating a festival, their custom is unknown to the outside world."

"During this festival, all townsfolk would be out celebrating."

"Once the effect of the Sleeping Curse vanished, we took that opportunity to escape."

After listening, Ivita could only nod. The Knight Griffin, five knight attendants, and twenty well-equipped soldiers; this was the most significant force she could muster, aside from a complete call to arms.

If they were captured even with such strength, it indicated that nothing could change the outcome unless she personally took action.

The real issue was whether she needed to wager everything on getting a singular piece of information, even if it was about the Thousand-Year Fire, for just one town.

The Old Witch shook her head, "No, no, the witch wouldn’t gather in such a compact area, unless there’s a Wizard Tower there."

She suddenly gripped the shoulder armor of the Knight Griffin, staring at him fiercely. "No."

"Did you see a towering structure in that town?"

"Not at all." The Knight Griffin replied with bewilderment. "What is it that you are suggesting?"

The Old Witch immediately shook his shoulder, "Tell me all that you saw in the town, quickly!"

"Immediately!"

"I need all the details."

The Knight Griffin, dizzy from the shaking, could only quickly recount all the details he observed.

He mentioned that every household was engaged in wool collection and most were shepherds. The houses in Kappa Town were orderly, with most being a mix of wood and stone construction, indicating the townsfolk to be generally affluent.

In the very center of the town, there was a large building, likely their meeting place.

He also mentioned that when they finally retreated, they stood by a hill near the town and gave it one last look. They saw a Stone Monument Cemetery almost as big as the town itself.

Scratching his head, the Knight Griffin said, "Oddly enough, the sky over the Stone Monument Cemetery was always covered in clouds."

"And there was lightning accompanied by it, which almost struck within the cemetery many times."

As soon as he finished, one of the knight attendants present said, "But what I saw was a cemetery cloaked in fog."

"Knight Griffin, why is the scene you saw different from what I saw?"

From among the crowd, one soldier spoke up, "No, sirs, what I saw was an empty barren field, with nothing on it. It was like a dead land, and oddly, not even a single bird could be seen in the sky above."

"It sent shivers down my spine when I looked at it."

"Why did you all see a graveyard?"

Confronted by the three different descriptions, Ivita’s exploration team started bickering. Each one was convinced about the validity of his own observation.

Seeing is believing, listening is not.

However, this saying seemed to have become a joke here.

They all looked at the same area, yet saw three different scenarios.

Ivita furrowed her brows, putting an end to the argument. "You all did a good job, each soldier will be rewarded 10 pennies."

"Knight attendants, 3 shillings each."

"You may all leave now."

The soldiers cheered in delight due to the unexpected compensation.

Only the Knight Griffin was left at the castle gate.

Seeing the Hearthstone Witch deep in thought, Ivita returned to her room on the second floor of the castle along with the two of them.

The maids brought in tea, Ivita asked the Hearthstone Witch, "Have you figured out something?"
