Chapter 997: Volume 32 Dark Clouds Sweep Across Chapter 15 Seed of Desire
Although Vero’s feelings toward him seemed somewhat cold, Komer knew it was the girl’s pride and reserve causing this. As long as he showed a moderate amount of sincerity, Komer believed that his relationship with Vero would soon return to what it once had been.
The problem did not lie there. Renta’s aggressive demeanor had become strikingly apparent after she took over Poznan and Silesia. This woman knew how to leverage the situation, and with the backing of the Anson family and the Romanov family’s blood relations, along with her own capabilities, the local noble bumpkins in Poznan and Silesia had long been conquered by Renta’s proud and slightly audacious demeanor.
Renta seemed to be living luxuriously, even more successfully than him, the true lord. However, only Komer and Renta themselves knew that without Komer, Renta would be nothing—no one would take a woman without real power seriously. If it weren’t for the subtle underlying connection of a betrothal with him behind Renta, Komer believed Renta’s status would be no different than Tracy’s. Fortunately, Renta was well aware of her true position and never overstepped her bounds; her performances were indeed commendable and deserving of praise. Komer had to admit that without Renta, Poznan and Silesia, and even Homer, would not be as calm as they were currently.
Renta and Vero, and now adding Furina, Komer indeed felt a bit headache. If Renta and Furina were largely about political marriages, Vero certainly did not fit under this label; Komer did not want this term to tarnish the relationship between him and Vero.
How great it would be if Vero were like Eve or Grace, or even like Finitz from another race. But now, it seemed he must make a choice, any kind of which would bring about many negative effects. Even without Vero, it was the same, so Komer simply set it aside and didn’t think about it. If it weren’t for Puber, that old crow letting it slip, Komer might even think he could keep dragging his feet indefinitely.
Noticing that Komer seemed a bit distracted, Puber secretly shook his head. Such romantic entanglements should be a source of pride for anyone, but facing the Boss, they seemed to have turned into a vexing problem. A man should not have so many misgivings, acting on one’s desires is the true nature of a man—alas, the Boss seemed never to see through this.
"Boss, if it’s really troubling you, why not make some concessions in other conditions? I suppose what matters more to the Basarabians is the power in your hands, not exactly the status Furina should hold. Of course, these two issues will still be connected down the line. They’re also under a lot of pressure from the joint forces of the Northern Alliance and the Church of Light, so if we could provide some support as compensation, I believe they won’t make too much fuss over Furina’s status issues. As for Furina herself, I think, with your wisdom and valor, Boss, it shouldn’t be an issue, right? With women, once they’re in bed, it’s just that simple, a few tricks and sweet talk should do the job."
The first part of Puber’s discourse somewhat moved Komer, but the following few sentences almost bordered on nonsense. His old friend always liked to mix serious matters with jest, fortunately, Komer had already gotten used to his style.
"If the Basarabians truly wish to become close and essential allies of ours in Nicosia, they should not be limited to these actions only; they still need more powerful means to prove their sincerity." Komer deflected the subject.
"Hmm, Grand Duke Antonescu doesn’t have that kind of courage. Managing to produce Furina, a mere Skylark, is probably the greatest achievement of his life. He’s just a maintainer at best, precisely speaking, he’s not even a qualified one at that, as his reaction during the crisis in Nicosia clearly shows he hasn’t even grasped the essential principle of doom facing both lips and teeth. If the Church of Light and the Cretans suddenly became interested in his territory now, it’s hard to say whether he would actively offer up that Skylark," Puber said bluntly and harshly, particularly portraying Grand Duke Antonescu’s psyche in a more despicable light, but Komer had grown accustomed to his cutting remarks. It was the truth merely unembellished, which many people found hard to accept.
"That he lacks such courage does not mean he lacks such desire. On this point of desire, I think every ruler is the same. We’ve already dealt a heavy blow to the Atticans, and he should clearly see the direction of the conflict in Cartin. I need to remind him that if he cannot demonstrate more decisive actions, the possibility of us standing by in the future as the dispute with the Northern Alliance evolves into a crisis will be much greater. But if he can show greater resolve in this current conflict, then in the territorial dispute with its northern neighbor, we will provide them unselfish help and support," Komer chuckled.
"Haha, Komer, you’re openly declaring war on the Northern Alliance by encouraging Basarabia to stake territorial claims against its northern neighbor. Does Grand Duke Antonescu have that much courage and ambition? I highly doubt it," Puber shook his head with skepticism.
"Hmm, the Basarabians already have ongoing territorial conflicts with their northern neighbors; it’s just that under the severe oppression of the Atticans and the Cretans, they have not dared to voice their objections. What happens, though, when the once towering giants of the Atticans and the Cretans crumble before them? How do you think Grand Duke Antonescu and his ministers will think then? Even the backbones propping them up can tremble under our military might; why should the Basarabians fear those little northern countries?" Komer said, arms crossed and smile faint yet mocking, "Once the seed of desire is planted and given the right amount of water and nourishment, it will overturn any stone pressing down upon it, and this stone seems more like a pile of mud."
Puber nodded in appreciation, clearly his Boss had a deeper understanding of a ruler’s desire than him. They were not devoid of ambition, but rather of an opportunity, and once given the chance, the force they could unleash might be much greater than imagined. (To be continued.
