Chapter 990: Volume 32: Dark Clouds Gather, Chapter 8: Opportunity in War
Yale let out a soft sigh, regretting that his superiors and the knight leaders did not share his opinion. They believed that these rough men from the remote lands of Caucasus were merely physically stronger. They could not compare to the true beast warriors of the Northern Wasteland. Once war broke out, those undisciplined and poorly trained local barbarians would reveal their inherent weakness, and perhaps the army needed only one or two decent battles to end the entire war.
If things were really that simple, that would truly be strange. If Komer could rise from obscurity in Nicosia, how could he be so mediocre? Zellin, Philip, and the Romanov family all silently fell at his hands. Could it be that the Nicosians were all a bunch of incompetent fools? Of course not. It’s just that the truth is often not believed.
Yale’s gaze drifted towards the rear, where six thousand light armor cavalry followed behind the heavy armored cavalry. This was his main strike force; both in terms of speed and stamina, the light armor cavalry’s Mundell warhorses were among the few excellent breeds on the Blue Continent. Although they couldn’t carry as much weight as the Laman giant horses, their superior speed and stamina made them the obvious choice for the light cavalry of the Attica Duchy.
The equipment of light infantry differed significantly from that of the heavy armored cavalry in both armor and weapons. They lacked a complete set of iron lamellar armor, at most only a couple of metal plates embedded in the leather armor at vital points, and instead of charging spears, they were equipped with sharp and weighty long swords designed for slashing, along with the round shields on their horses. This was the standard gear for a light cavalry soldier.
If the heavy armored cavalry were a giant axe in his hand, capable of splitting mountains and clearing paths, then the light armor cavalry were like two gleaming daggers, ready to deliver fatal blows from different directions and angles at any moment.
Looking at the two armies under his control, Yale finally felt a bit of reassurance. As long as he had these two armies ready to fight, Yale believed no one could easily have their way with him.
The distance between the knights and his own army grew further and further. Yale knew that these knights did not like him, just as he had never been fond of those self-important knights. In their eyes, he was nothing more than a vulgar officer who had the luck to climb up from the bottom, but now the two sides had to come together.
A rider on a swift horse galloped towards him. From the movement of the rider, Yale knew it was a knight.
"General Yale, Sir Gray requests your presence. He has important matters to discuss with you."
"Oh?" A premonition of foreboding enveloped Yale. Sir Gray, as the commander of this war, did not really understand the true situation in Nicosia. To a large extent, he had accepted the perspectives and opinions of the knight leaders. His request for Yale’s presence now was obviously not a good sign.
The goatee under his chin looked so irritating. Sir Gray, rarely seen in his armor, swayed with his ostentatious long sword hanging at his waist. His puffy fish eyes were dull and lifeless, his lips bulged out like a goldfish, and a large, garlic-like nose—no matter how one looked at him, it was hard to associate him with the influential class of the Attica Duchy. Nearby, several knight leaders appeared excited, whispering among themselves, which added even more concern to Yale’s unease.
"Sir Gray, you were looking for me?"
"Hmm, General Yale, Viscount Basman’s Knights Regiment’s vanguard has already engaged with Nicosians about ten miles ahead, likely the Homer Knight Order. We have achieved an initial victory, but we did not manage to annihilate our opponent. We’ve come to hear your thoughts," Sir Gray seemed somewhat distracted.
Hear my thoughts? A sinking feeling came over Yale’s heart; these fellows must have some undesirable plan they want him to carry out, otherwise they wouldn’t be putting on such a pretentious display of courtesy.
"Uh, I’m not fully apprised of the situation yet. Are we sure it was the Homer Knight Order? What about their Barbarian Army and Half-beastman Army? Have any been spotted?"
"General Yale, our scouts have made it clear, it’s their Homer Knight Order, about fifteen hundred strong. They are very formidable in combat, but in front of our brave knights, they still fled in disarray. As for their Barbarians and Half-beastmen, they should still be several dozens of miles further back. It seems their Knight Order was serving as the vanguard. Unlike us in Attica who have numerous cavalry forces, Nicosia does not produce fine warhorses," another knight leader picked up the conversation. Yale recognized him as Viscount Enger, one of the deputy heads of the Knights Regiment, a complacent fellow who thought too highly of himself. If it weren’t for the fact that his wife happened to be the niece of the Archduchess, this guy would probably still be cowering in some backwater territory.
"The Homer Knight Order has been defeated? Well, that’s good news. What do you need us to do now? It would be best if we just keep pushing forward steadily. We have the advantage in combat power, and when the main forces from both sides get close, we’ll have better strategies to deal with them."
Yale wanted to plug any gaps early on to prevent these fellows from always dreaming of risky maneuvers that would bring them instant fame. These knights, barely wet behind the ears, longed for a battle that would be well-known across the world—a major concern for Yale. Sir Gray, unfortunately, was one who lacked decisiveness and was eager to ingratiate himself with these influential dreamers within the country.
"No, no, General Yale, although they have been defeated, they managed to escape our attack and have fallen back to rest about twenty miles from us. Our scouts have already scouted the area clearly. Uh, our intention is for you to bring your Light Armor Cavalry to work with our Knight Order to deliver a fatal blow to the Homer Knight Order and resolve them once and for all," another knight leader quickly added.
Yale fell silent. He was certain that things were not as simple as they seemed. Although Basman had not spoken, these two who took the lead had already made their intentions clear, and Sir Gray had clearly been persuaded by them. Opposing them might not be successful; instead, it would be better to take control himself.
"Mm, if there truly is such a good opportunity, then of course we cannot let it slip by. However, we must not be careless, I need to first verify the accuracy of this intelligence."
"You••••••" Enger was clearly upset at Yale’s mistrust, but Viscount Basman stopped him, "Of course, General Yale. Please verify the information as soon as possible. Opportunities in warfare are fleeting, time waits for no one."
"I understand, Viscount Basman."(To be continued, for what happens next, please visit www.qidian.com. More Chapters are available, support the author, support authorized reading!)
