Chapter 987: Volume 32: Dark Clouds Overhead, Chapter 5: Who Can Compete?
Komer felt for the first time that the power he possessed was exceptionally mighty.
The Rock Corps and Furious Wave Corps, dense and immovable like two square blocks of cast iron, stood steadfast to the right of the Review Platform. Their wild momentum required no pretense to be displayed, and the frosty, solid atmosphere was intense enough to give the wilderness a feeling that frost could be scraped off the air. In the morning’s thin sunshine, their pale blades glimmered with a chilling coldness.
Unmoving as mountains! That was Komer’s demand of them. The lazy yet restless Half-Beastmen, the irascible yet staunch Barbarians, under his iron fist, were like iron ore in a furnace—easily forged into malleable iron. And when the heat dissipated, what was presented to the world were blades ready to draw blood!
The thick, yet simply magic-enhanced leather armor, with a layer of tough cotton tucked inside, not only had an advantage in keeping warmth but was also superior in defense, enough to withstand common arrow attacks without affecting the warriors’ agility. Indeed, the heavy Beastmen Giant Shields and the Iron Spears, which were over three meters, seemed rather light in their hands, while hefty long knives and comparatively nimble Round Shields appeared even more effortless for them.
These were his two iron hammers, capable of blocking any opponent’s slashing and chopping, always ready to strike a painful blow. Their powerful hammering abilities were enough to cause excruciating pain to any armed force. They were truly the unique trump infantries in his hand. Komer was confident that on the Continent, perhaps only the elite infantry of the Beastmen royal Tiger Clan—the Spotted Armor—could possess such formidable strength. In the world of Mortals, there simply was no armed force that could match the power of these two armies.
Perhaps this time it would be the Northern Alliance’s turn to experience the "surprises" these races, whom they labeled as barbaric tribes, would bring to them. Komer believed that the performance of these barbaric tribes would greatly broaden their horizons.
Perhaps only the Knights on the left flank could really contend in spirit with these warriors who came from the remote wilderness forests.
In contrast to the uniformity in attire and momentum of the Half-Beastmen and Barbarian Warriors, the Knights’ dress and decorations were far more exquisite and personalized. The Anti-magic Composite Armor had almost become the standard gear for the Knights of the Three Great Knights, with delicate and beautiful magic symbols and runes covering every iron plate. This not only enhanced the toughness of the armor but more importantly, it granted the Knights an initial capacity to resist magic attacks.
For the Knights, the honor of the family and the glory of knighthood always surpassed everything else. On the helmets, spaulders, breastplates, and even on the horses’ heads, one could see inscriptions and crests that the Knights engraved to highlight the long history of their families. Red shoulder belts, purple scarves, green arm covers, golden-yellow linings, brown leather boots, special branded patterns—Knights sought to demonstrate their distinctiveness through these accessories at all times.
Their individuality also had to be shown with their weaponry. They firmly held their majestic and slender Knight Spears, the spearheads pointing towards the sky, with the dark blades emitting a fierce intent to kill in the air. Whether forged entirely of Bin Iron or combined with silver, whether endowed with Mana or mixed with Magic Metal, the weapons were hefty and steadfast, fierce and powerful. Knights strove to reflect their unique power in their Weapon.
Perhaps the only similarity they shared was the pride and defiance that shone on their faces. Honor and self-respect would witness a knight’s life, and it was only their towering pride and aloofness that were the true nature of knights. Komer even believed that even if they faced the axe and guillotine, they would not bow.
Some impatient horses kept snorting, but under the knights’ control, both knights and steeds stood harmoniously in unison here. The exquisite reins and splendid saddles, adorned with special marks of various insignias, and the semi-worn bridles, all proved the knights’ skill and experience.
Facing the immense pressure of the formidable aura from the right wing’s Half-Beastmen and Barbarians, the knight leaders were even more eager to prove and console themselves with a true, proper war, as only real battles could impart genuine lessons and experience.
If the Half-beastman Army and the Barbarian Army were like two iron fists clenching together, brimming with endless momentum, then the three Knights regiments were like three sharp iron caltrops, each point releasing its own keen edge and sharpness.
Komer looked on with satisfaction at these two starkly different forces, one heavy as a hammer and the other sharp as a knife—who could compete when both forces were unleashed?
Komer was convinced that it was wishful thinking for any army to emerge unscathed from an encounter with these two forces under his command, not to mention he held sway over yet another more threatening force.
Subconsciously, Komer’s gaze drifted towards another group standing silently apart from the other two groups. They did not have a uniform attire, and apart from their robes being roughly similar, it was almost impossible to find any semblance of commonality between them. Each individual seemed proud and solitary, standing out like a crane amongst chickens.
But upon closer observation, one would discover that although they were not subordinates to each other, they were not entirely incompatible either. They all maintained their independent dignity, yet there was a harmonious aura flowing among them. It was an atmosphere of mutual appreciation. The Mages had gradually evolved from individual entities of power into a collective force; through group synergy, they could exert greater power, even dominate the victory of a major battle.
Such a group stood there, utterly distinct from the other two forces surrounding them, as changeable as water clouds, as elusive as wind and fire—this was the supreme Magic Power! No one could underestimate this force, especially under certain conditions, when it could overturn the outcome of a war.
Komer had never underestimated this force. From the initial handful of individuals to the dozens of Mages and Magicians now, the increase in their number also meant more power at his disposal. Even after dispatching a group of Mages to Livonia, Komer still commanded a substantial force of Mages. Together with the infantry and Knights regiments, they would witness this battle that would decide the fate of the entire Nicosia.
