Chapter 963: Volume 31: The Hand That Attempts to Cover the Sky, Chapter 7: Suspicion and Distrust
The landing of a large number of warriors from the North at Corfu Harbor couldn’t possibly escape the dwarves’ attention, after all, the fierce visages of the Half-Beastmen weren’t much different from the Barbarians; although there were significant differences in their armaments and apparels, for the dwarves, who had almost become skittish, it still warranted considerable vigilance. Without the repeated assurances of the Iberians, the dwarves would absolutely not be willing to take such a risk.
The surging Nicosia Soldiers soon formed a solid military formation on the docks, and the dwarven scouts around the harbor were monitoring and observing the army, both overtly and covertly.
The aura they exuded was somewhat different from the local armies; the Half-Beastmen, with their outstanding presence and high spirits, and even the mortal archers displayed excellent discipline. The figures called Knights weren’t entirely consistent either, with dozens of gloomy fellows appearing somewhat lax, yet like needles hidden in a bundle of cotton, they occasionally revealed a chilling murderous intent that could be felt even tens of meters away.
Another large group was striving to show their distinctiveness, proudly maintaining a level gaze at all times, equipped with both Knight Spears and Knight’s Swords, and when paired with uniform armor and the unified color of their knightly robes and cloaks, the mix of pride and battle intent that seeped through revealed a sharpness that seemed capable of piercing through solid walls.
It was only after this troop finally completed assembling and left the docks at Corfu Harbor along the predetermined route that two dwarves who had been observing closely really breathed a sigh of relief, their eyes betraying the conflicted feelings that both had been affected by the commanding air that pervaded the docks just moments ago.
"Who knows whether the Iberians have brought blessing or misfortune by bringing these folks here? I have a bad feeling that once they arrive, they may not leave this place again."
"You mean to say they will stay in Flanders indefinitely?"
"It’s hard to say, if we’re only talking about numbers, this little army really doesn’t amount to much, but... "
"But what? What exactly are you worried about?"
"Are the Iberians possibly inviting wolves into their house?"
"Just this number of troops? Even if they are formidable, it seems impossible for them to contend with Iberia, a whole country."
"No, it’s not that simple. These people are definitely not coming just to defend Flanders, the situation in Flanders has been relatively stable, and although there are diverse opinions within the Barbarians towards Flanders, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that they are about to wage war on Flanders unless the Barbarians are determined to breach the truce and reignite the war. However, would those Barbarians who have close dealings with Flanders agree to do that?"
"We really don’t understand what these Barbarians intend to do, but the intelligence gathered by our scouts confirms that the Barbarians are indeed preparing for war, which means that war will likely start very soon."
The debate between two senior dwarven officers failed to produce a convincing result, and the true mission of this group could only be understood after the war had ended.
From landing at Corfu Harbor and heading west, Ilot would lead the entire South Conquest Army across the north of the Kingdom of Shimaina into the Central Region of the Iberian Kingdom, then veer northwest, and finally cross the Pyreness Mountain Range to reach Antwerp, the central city of Flanders Valley.
Along the way, Ilot realized that both the dwarfs and Iberians were actually quite wary of his army. Every fortress they passed maintained a high level of vigilance and sufficient troops. It seemed that Komer hadn’t quite established a strong enough reputation in this region.
Upon stepping into Flanders Valley, Ilot and Dragumo could feel that the region had already slightly taken on a Caucasus style, whether in terms of architectural style or the welcome the traders of the region extended to the army, something characteristic only of the Caucasus.
Antwerp was not very large, but it was undeniably the central city in the entire Flanders Valley. While the streets were few, they were remarkably smooth and orderly. Many buildings appeared to be recently constructed, lacking the solemn and tall structures of the North.
The arrival of three thousand Nicosia soldiers brought a lot more liveliness to Antwerp. Although Ilot ordered his troops to maintain necessary vigilance and not to leave the barracks at will, the army’s quartermasters still added a significant amount of vitality to the streets of Antwerp.
Standing in front of the Lord’s Mansion, Ilot stopped. The courtyard had remained in its original state. As the seasonal residence of the Lord, it was supposed to be very busy, but since Komer hardly spent much time here, it was instead very tranquil.
"Mr. Ilot, what are you standing there daydreaming for? Why not go in and have a seat?" Dragumo had always maintained a good relationship with Ilot, completely free from the strangeness and separation that often existed between Half-Beastmen and Mortals.
"Well, this is Komer’s Lord’s Mansion. Such a large courtyard being left idle just because he’s not around is really a pity," Ilot shook his head with some regret.
"Err, Mr. Ilot, I heard that Miss Tracy might be around here?" Dragumo’s face showed a rare secretive expression. Not something typically found on a half-beastman’s face, it irked Ilot quite a bit. Were even these honest Half-Beastmen becoming gossipy like old women, spreading rumors everywhere?
"Where did you hear such ridiculous news? Don’t you know that Eve and Grace, those two women, came with us to Flanders? Komer arranged this as their long-term residence. Tracy, hmph, Tracy wouldn’t have the qualifications to live here. Those who live here are often indicative of something," Ilot hummed disdainfully.
"Really? Are there special conventions to that? I heard that Tracy is also one of Lord Komer’s women, just Philip’s daughter, after all," Dragumo didn’t understand the customs of Mortals, nor did he intend to understand them.
"Women differ greatly from one another, and you wouldn’t understand. All you need to do is command your soldiers well. Indeed, I don’t understand it myself, only Komer knows the intricacies." Ilot laughed. This time Eve and Grace coming south seemed to confirm their status in Komer’s eyes.
