Chapter 959: Volume 31: Desperate Hand Trying to Cover the Sky, Chapter 3: Arrogance

"Whish!" Vladimir Koff’s fierce and ruthless sideward counter-sweep sent his knight spear through a stunning arc of dark glow, unleashing Magic power of Dark Devour that surged up at the moment it collided with the opposing knight spear.

Jack’s body shivered lightly, as the Sacred Fighting Qi, already mustered to its utmost within him, suddenly burst forth in waves, radiating outward. His knight spear issued a faint metallic tremor, particularly at the spearhead, which emanated a silver-white holy radiance, clashing and melding with the upward rush of the Dark Devour Power.

Both Vladimir Koff and Jack felt a tremendous backlash from this straightforward collision, devoid of any trickery. The Dark Devour Power, like an insatiable black hole, seemed poised to engulf the Sacred Fighting Qi completely, but amid the turbulent surge, the Sacred Fighting Qi always managed to break through at the last moment. Amidst the tumultuous skies, thirty-three clear clinks of metal on metal reverberated as the two combatants who were continuously changing postures in mid-air eventually had to land, disheartened.

Neither had managed to secure a decisive victory in their final strike. The power struggle between the Black Flame Knights’ chief and his deputy remained unresolved, with the conclusion still awaiting the next duel in three months.

Once on the ground, Vladimir Koff took stock of his adversary. His blood and breath oscillating slightly, suggesting the stir of more Dark Devour Power within him, Vladimir Koff was unconcerned. With his current strength, such backlash posed no real threat to him. He was more interested in how the opponent had fared under his ferocious attack. It seemed as though the opponent had handled it with ease—at least, on the surface. But Vladimir Koff was certain that Jack was not as unbothered as he appeared, otherwise the leadership position within the Black Flame Knights might well need exchanging.

Jack was also steadying himself, quieting his own turbulent blood. As Vladimir Koff had predicted, withstanding that astonishing blow had been no easy task. The vicious Dark Devour Power nearly eroded his Mana. If he hadn’t continuously unleashed his Sacred Fighting Qi to counteract it until the very end, the fierce strike might have disgraced him on the spot. Jack knew that he was still slightly outstripped in strength, and although his opponent looked drained after the blow, Jack himself was genuinely unable to launch a counterattack. Fortunately, the aura he displayed preserved his dignity and laid the groundwork for their next encounter.

This was a routine sparring match within the Black Flame Knights, free from excessive worries or constraints, guided by the principle of enhancing personal strength and experience. The disparity in the combat capabilities among the dozens of knights was minimal, so easily subduing an opponent was highly unlikely. The small attack groups, formed based on individual specialties, boasted considerable fighting strength. Besides the knights’ one-on-one sparring, exercises involving tactical offense and defense between small units were also a major part of their training, which proved highly beneficial for enhancing teamwork and understanding within the Black Flame Knights.

Lord Komer greatly admired the sparring method initiated by Vladimir Koff. It not only helped improve individual members’ abilities but also fostered friendships and understanding through this training method, cultivating a sense of belonging to the group. Especially when united against a common foe, the mutual understanding and sense of honor among the members could play a significantly important role.

"Mr. Vladimir Koff, Mr. Jack, are your companions ready?"

Lord Komer looked at the Black Flame Knights members who were still discussing and practicing in pairs. Their unruly attitude was evident from their disregard for their nominal lord’s presence—they were absorbed in their own plans, ignoring the arrival of their lord. Yet this did not perturb Komer at all. He did not need these men to be blindly loyal to him. It was impossible for the knights of this unconventional regiment to strictly adhere to the code as other regular knights did, nor did he require such rigid adherence. All he needed from them was victory by any means. Victory was his sole demand of them.

"Lord Komer, do we really need to prepare all that ’solemnly and meticulously’ to play a game with those Barbarians? Do you have so little faith in us, the Black Flame Knights? If that’s the case, why bother sending us all the way to Flanders?" Jack glanced sideways at Komer with a complicated expression. It was said that Tracy had also left Nicosia for the Southern Mediterranean Region, but no definite news of her had arrived. Could she be related to the man before him?

"Mr. Jack, I’m just reminding you that the Barbarians are not as foolish as you imagine, and large-scale warfare is not as simple as small-scale combat. Winning battles does not necessarily mean winning the war. If you defeat your enemies, but they achieve their strategic objectives, that is still failure," Komer retorted, unapologetically. With these people, there was no need for beating around the bush—directness was more appropriate.

"So, what do you want from us, Lord Komer? Do you expect us, the Black Flame Knights, to achieve everything you desire?" Jack shot back.

"No, I have no such unrealistic expectations. I simply hope that the Black Flame Knights can adequately play their role. The Bright Torrent Knights, as well as the Rock Corps—only when all forces come together can we be a perfect whole. Only if each fulfills their role will the victory of this war be ours," said Komer, his voice steady.

Vladimir Koff nodded emphatically, "Lord Komer, we, the Black Flame Knights, will fulfill our duties and responsibilities as you request. We only hope that this war is not too monotonous and uninteresting. We would like this war to bring some surprises and excitements for the Black Flame Knights. Merely clashing with the Barbarians might be too dull, as I share the same sentiment with Jack."

"Vladimir Koff, are you hinting at something?" Komer squinted his eyes.

"I’ve heard that the Royal Family’s Knights of Sparta have quite a few capable warriors would it be possible for us to pay them another visit at our leisure? We have long admired the style of the Swordsman," Vladimir Koff said leisurely. (To be continued. For what happens next, please visit www.qidian.com.
