Chapter 953: 30 Dawn of the Empire 23 Wilderness Wind and Cloud_2
"Woodleigh, are you talking about the Carlo Tribe?!" Montrey clenched his teeth and said, "I kindly invited them to join our plan initially, but they firmly refused and caused us no small amount of trouble. Now they want to use the methods they use on mortals against us? No way. They think we’re mortals, that we would just swallow our anger and let them extort and plunder at will? They are dreaming!"
"It’s probably not just the Carlo Tribe. I suspect that both the Sanwa Tribe and the Carter Tribe have been roped in too. They are still in a hostile state with the Iberians in the east, unable to obtain enough food and supplies. With this year being another disastrous year, they simply can’t hold out any longer. I reckon after a period of time, there will be more such incidents. We need to seriously consider our next move." Woodleigh’s gaunt cheeks trembled with the strain of hard mental conflict.
"Woodleigh, what are we waiting for? We should do what needs to be done! We knew this day would come; dammit, we gave them a chance, and they did not take it, relying only on despicable means of overt and covert thievery. Do they think the food in our hands was given to us by mortals for free?" Montrey’s dark face flushed with a hint of red, his eyes flickering with fierce light, "It has always come to this point, and we can’t avoid it."
Woodleigh’s fingers tapped lightly on the wooden case, but his mind was engaged in a fierce mental struggle.
The situation was becoming clear; this year, the Sanwa Tribe and the Carlo Tribe were certainly not going to make it through. They would either have to attack Shimaina and Iberia as before. But now, the Iberians had already formed an alliance with the Dwarves of Shimaina, and during the past year, Iberia and Shimaina had clearly reinforced their border fortress constructions. The defensive systems were significantly strengthened and improved.
Moreover, fatal was the Iberians’ formation of the first Mage Corps in the Southern Mediterranean Region. The Southern Mediterranean Region had not highly regarded the power of mages, but the formation of this Mage Corps marked a change in that situation. Following the Iberians, the Piraeus people also organized a Mage Corps team. As these Mage Corps powers were established one after another, they would have a huge impact on the way wars were fought, especially in the siege warfare involving city fortresses, where the power of mages was crucial.
Woodleigh, who often went out traveling in disguise, deeply understood this. When he saw how easily those mages could summon cataclysmic natural forces to unleash everywhere, his surprise and fear were still hidden in his heart. Although the Mountain people warriors were brave and invincible, when facing these powers from nature, Woodleigh did not believe the Mountain people could overcome this obstacle without difficulty, especially in siege warfare where such power could likely decide the outcome of the entire war.
The Sanwa Tribe and the Carlo Tribe had definitely tasted the power of the Iberian mages, albeit not in large-scale warfare. However, even routine skirmishes were enough to make them realize that the balance of victory was silently tipping towards the mortals. And now, it was too late for them to change their course. The Iberians and Shimaina people would not accept any of their demands. Mortals would not trust them, just as they would not truly trust the mortals.
Thus, their gaze could only turn to the west, towards their own, the Caron Tribe and the Sanya Tribe.
This was definitely an internal conflict among the Mountain people, but it was unavoidable. With the establishment of the Iberian Mage Corps power, it meant the start of a disastrous time for the Mountain people. If a chief could not accurately detect this seemingly minor change, it would bring a disaster upon his tribe.
Luckily, he had caught this change, and the Caron Tribe had timely provided him with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"Montrey, although we have made many targeted preparations over the past year, do you think we can withstand their attack? Or, do we now have the strength to fight them?" Woodleigh, after a long contemplation, asked abruptly.
Montrey had also been contemplating this issue; from the beginning of commerce with Flanders, he knew this matter would not come to a good end. He could discern the undertones, both overt and covert, in Woodleigh’s speech. War was inevitable, and it would not be with Mortals or Dwarves but with the Mountain people. Inevitability meant only one option: proactive engagement. On this point, Montrey was acutely aware that anyone who sought to seize the interests of the Caron Tribe would have to do so over the corpses of Caron warriors.
"Woodleigh, I don’t want to exaggerate, but indeed there is still a gap between us and them. If we had another two to three years to prepare, I believe we could fight them, but not now. However, in terms of the Carter Tribe, perhaps we can think of something. If we could bring the Carter Tribe over, perhaps we..."
Woodleigh cut off Montrey, "They won’t give us the time. This time will decide everything. We definitely have to go to the Carter Tribe, but expecting the Carter Tribe to join us is unrealistic. At most, they will remain neutral, and in that scenario, we still stand no chance."
A look of dejection washed over Montrey’s face, "What do we do then? Are we to just tolerate their bullying and exploitation?"
"Hmm, I fear even if we suffer in silence, we can’t escape," Woodleigh snorted coldly. "Right now, there’s only one thing to do, and that’s to get the Sanjia Tribe to join our alliance and confront Sanwa and the Carlo Tribe together."
"The Sanjia Tribe?" Montrey shook his head, "Woodleigh, don’t you know that the Sanjia Tribe has already wholly sided with the Caucasus? In fact, Dvanch and Bellamong hardly have any military force left to use independently, and they won’t get involved in our civil war."
"Hmm, Dvanch and the others be damned, Komer is the real master of the Sanjia Tribe now. We must lay our cards on the table with Flanders, make them understand that, if Komer doesn’t help us, we will have no choice but to fully lean towards Sanwa and the Carlo Tribe, and then Flanders will once again become the backyard of the Carlo and Sanwa Tribes," Woodleigh said coldly, his words nearly bursting through his clenched teeth.
"But, but..." Montrey sighed heavily and did not continue.
"Montrey, what are you trying to say?" Woodleigh seemed to have guessed something.
"Woodleigh, we both know what kind of man Komer is. If we ask, he will definitely support us fully, but what about later? Will we become the next Sanjia Tribe?" Montrey said bitterly.
Montrey apparently had thought about this already. He hung his head and after a long time spoke despondently, "Who can say what the future holds? Right now, we can only take things one step at a time, otherwise our people below won’t agree."
