Chapter 928: Volume 29 Remote Sword Qi, Chapter 22 Each Flies on Their Own

Gazing at the United Army that had begun to fall into chaos, Komer’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. It was time. The magic attack power of the Light Mages was greatly weakened, as was the strength of the knights. The withdrawal of the Thunderhorse Knights had also considerably dampened the fighting spirit of the soldiers in the United Army. Compared to the dogged resistance on the Homer side, the will of the mortal soldiers in the United Army was distinctly weaker, especially apparent in this adverse battlefield.

Fran had also noticed this subtle change. He was surprised as to why the Thunderhorse Knights had exited the battlefield, but he couldn’t let this rare opportunity slip away; it was time to deploy decisive power. As the battle flag waved, the remaining twelve Thunder Pengs swept in from both flanks. Concerned about being detected by the enemy, he had not deployed all the Thunder Pengs in the first wave of surprise attacks against the mages, but now there was no longer any need for secrecy. It was most important to crush the will of the United Army and destroy their desire to fight.

This was not the most crucial move yet; accompanied by the low wailing of the Horned Horn, the entire Homer Camp began to exhibit some bizarre changes. The Army of Homer started to retreat while simultaneously splitting open, suddenly revealing several large passages. The soldiers of the United Army hadn’t even fully grasped what was happening.

Accompanied by a dull roar, three Earthwalking Dragons appeared at the vanguard of a triangular assault formation right before the eyes of the United Army soldiers. The dragons, over four meters tall, shone resplendently in the sunshine with their thick, fine scales. Mounted on the dragons were Earth Dragon Warriors holding five-meter-long Dragon Spears, completely encased in heavy armor that even covered their faces with beast-shaped masks. Urged by the warriors on their backs, the Earthwalking Dragons began to quicken their pace, charging headlong into the United Army camp without hesitation.

The majority of the United Army soldiers, who were witnessing such a terrifying scene for the first time, were utterly petrified. Imagine a huge beast akin to a small hill charging towards you, its massive dragon feet stamping the ground and leaving basin-sized footprints with each step, causing the entire ground to tremble as if it were quaking. The coarse roars of the dragons echoed across the plains, and atop these dragons were the menacing Dragon Warriors, ever ready to deliver a fatal blow to anyone who might luckily escape being trampled.

Hardly any additional push was needed before the United Army camp began to collapse. The turn and run of the Noble private soldiers had a terribly bad example effect; the pounce of the Thunder Pengs from the flanks had already frightened them, and the appearance of the Earthwalking Dragons added the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

The flight of the Noble private soldiers immediately impacted the entire camp of the United Army. The furious charge of the Earthwalking Dragons also completely extinguished the fighting will of the veteran soldiers holding out. The mages still attempted to use their magic power to block the dragons, but the Homer Knights and the Black Flame Knights, who had already shifted from defense to offense and were suppressing the Heavenly Peng Knights, did not afford them the chance. Eager to launch a counterattack, the knights found these mages with their weak melee abilities to be perfect prey.

The Light Mages soon realized their plight—losing the protection of the knights, the mages could only cower in the castle to confront the knights in close combat. Apart from a select few of Archmage level, this was nearly a suicide mission.

No one was a fool, especially when they saw the Thunderhorse Knights leaving the field and even Deneby had disappeared without a trace. Now, with the Army of Homer’s momentum surging, the Light Mages immediately understood the situation. Fleeing was obviously the wisest choice. Wars among worldly powers should not involve mages, especially when their lives were at risk, and on this point, the Light Mages were surprisingly unanimous.

Lorenzo and Onia exchanged a look of bitterness. Komer’s timely undermining had been perfectly executed. The United Army had initially taken an absolute advantage using the Light Knights and Thunderhorse Knights’ assault capabilities, and the strong performance of the Light Mages had overwhelmed the Homer side, leaving them gasping for breath. If nothing went wrong, the Homer camp could last at most another half hour before the battle situation was decisively fixed. By then, even the appearance of the Earthwalking Dragons would be meaningless, as a relentless barrage of magic could turn these large but weak creatures into roasted dragons. However, all this was reversed due to that damned Deneby’s performance.

Lorenzo and Onia still had not figured out how Komer managed to coax Deneby and the Thunderhorse Knights out of the battlefield. If this was their premeditated scheme, then the cost was simply too great. The damage that the Thunderhorse Knights and the Heavenly Peng Knights had inflicted on the Army of Homer was enormous; without any reserve forces, even if the Barbarians and Half-Beastmen were fierce, they couldn’t withstand the charge of the Thunderhorse Knights and the Heavenly Peng Knights; their only outcome would have been annihilation.

Lorenzo and Onia had not expected the departure of the Thunderhorse Knights to be merely an accidental factor. Deneby, for his own selfish reasons related to Pericles Church, had utterly disregarded the interests of his allies. Although the alliance was fragile, such an outcome still brought infinite sorrow.

Lorenzo and Onia, though deeply saddened, knew that lingering further might mean they truly wouldn’t be able to leave. They feared not the Barbarian Soldiers but facing the encirclements of the Dark Knights and the exterminations of the Dark Mages. In their isolated and weak state, they, too, could not reverse the situation. Withdrawing early might indeed be the wisest choice. Continuing the war had no value. Let worldly powers settle their own disputes.

Susanov had sensed the adverse battle situation even earlier than Lorenzo and Onia. As the commander of Galle, his extensive war experience granted him a keener instinct than most. When he noticed the Thunderhorse Knights quietly leaving the field, he realized the seriousness of the problem. Losing the knightly advantage could result in a series of negative effects, particularly inhibiting the mage’s power, which could very likely affect the outcome of the war. He had to think one step ahead; preserving strength might be a necessary choice. In tough times, everyone is for themselves. When he first retreated, Susanov could only apologize to the still oblivious Golden Oak and Blue Dove Corps.
