Chapter 926: Volume 29 - Sword Qi Long-Pointing, Chapter 20: The Trade

Lord Komer seemed to discern something from the words of the Cathedral Grand Mage of Pericles Church. Could it be that this fellow still had something worthwhile to discuss with him? He knew all about Bear’s background, which meant that all his secrets were in this man’s hands. What was he planning to do?

Seeing the suspicious gaze that Komer cast his way, Deneby’s internal joy was undiminished. It seemed that his opponent had not realized the value of the items carried by the Muxi Sect member, or perhaps he didn’t even know what those things were. This was excellent, as it would greatly minimize any risks.

"Lord Komer, I have a proposal for you. Surely, you must see that the current situation is not in your favor. I know that you still have fight left in you, but even so, the outcome would likely be difficult for you to accept. The Thunderhorse Knights and Heavenly Peng Knights could cause immense damage, and we have more mages than your Mage Corps. Now that your Star Space Formation is contained, it’s time for our mages to counterattack. Thunder Peng’s attacks are not enough to reverse your disadvantage. Why don’t you try again? I assure you that half of your Thunder Pengs will not take to the skies again," Deneby asserted, his subsequent words carrying an unmistakable threat.

"Sir Deneby, I don’t care who you are, I don’t want to waste time. If you really have something to say, I’ll give you one chance. If you wish to use this to stall for time, I regret to inform you that you will not succeed," Komer said, not wanting to think any further. If he couldn’t deal with this man before resolving the Bear matter in Trajan, then the outcome of this war might truly be unpredictable. The opposing knights’ strength was simply too formidable, and he had underestimated his enemy, never anticipating that the Thunderhorse Knights and Sky Peng Knights would join forces to aid the people of Galle. It seemed he had underestimated the Church of Light’s wariness of him.

"Very well, I believe our Pericles Church and Lord Komer do not share any deep-seated grudges. The stance of the Court and St. Vasily Church does not represent our Pericles Church’s position. We understand and support Lord Komer’s approach in Homer and Poznan. The demands of the people for faith should not be coerced, but guided. I sincerely hope that Lord Komer can provide us with as much convenience as possible for the Church of Light, within this principle," Deneby said, somewhat awkwardly. He didn’t know how to broach his true intentions, and it was difficult to suddenly change tack in the midst of real battle. He had to use these roundabout words to build a bridge.

Komer too felt the difference; this fellow was now discussing religious policy with him at such a critical moment. Could it be that he was really trying to stall for time? Didn’t he find that a bit too naïve? As mana surged to its peak within him, Komer didn’t want to waste any more time. A dark light burst forth from his Black Crystal Staff.

"Sir Deneby, what are you trying to imply? If you have nothing else to say, I think it’s time we had a real contest," Komer pressed.

Noticing his impatience, Deneby couldn’t help but detest his own lack of eloquence, "Lord Komer, please wait. I think I can first express my goodwill."

As Komer watched with puzzled eyes, Deneby swiftly sent out a Magic Transmission. Kent, who received Deneby’s Magic Transmission, was shocked and had no choice but to temporarily withdraw from the battlefield. Although he did not understand why Deneby would call for his withdrawal at such a time, he had to abide by Deneby’s plan, as Archbishop Frenster had appointed him the expedition’s chief.

Kent’s withdrawal from the battlefield provided the Homer side on the battlefield with a momentary respite. His singlehanded stand against three opponents meant that once he was gone, those freed could immediately engage the charging Light Knights.

"Lord Komer, perhaps we can find a bit of time to talk now?" Deneby watched Komer’s expression closely. His suspicions were not unexpected, and Deneby didn’t want to waste words on explanations—there were things that even Kent wasn’t quite fit to know. "Lord Komer, the Muxi Sect disciple is a senior thief. He stole important items from our Pericles Church, items that belong to the Church of Light. I believe those items are now in your possession. If you could return them to us, our Pericles Church would be immensely grateful."

Komer’s heart stirred. Indeed, Bear had carried many scattered items, but when he searched him, he hadn’t paid much attention, and now they were all still in the Cosmic Bag. Subsequently, all his attention had been on how to refine Bear himself, so he hadn’t given much thought to the items left on his person. Unexpectedly, those turned out to be important artifacts of the Church of Light. He wondered what items were so significant that Deneby had to bring them up even at such a crisis, to the point of even withdrawing Kent from the battlefield. Komer was desperate to examine them but understood this was not the right time.

"Sir Deneby, indeed, those items are in my possession. I have no interest in the belongings of the Church of Light. It’s no issue to hand them over to Pericles Church, but I would very much like to see a more concrete display of your goodwill right now."

Seeing Komer’s gaze drifting towards Trajan, Deneby shook his head with a wry smile: "Lord Komer, you should understand that I have no authority to interfere with the actions of St. Vasily Church and the Religious Court; please understand this."

"Then where are the Thunderhorse Knights? What about the mages of Pericles Church?" Komer demanded harshly.

Deneby hesitated before replying, "Lord Komer, after all, we are all from the Church of Light. Such actions would undoubtedly signify an open rupture. I can only try to quietly keep the Thunderhorse Knights away from the Battlefield. Please cooperate with us on this. However, before that, shouldn’t you also show some goodwill?"

This was perhaps the first time in his life that Deneby spoke to an outsider with such a gentle tone. The outcome of this war didn’t have much impact on Pericles Church; Nicosia was never within the influence of the Pericles Church. If it weren’t for the suspicion towards Komer, Archbishop Frenster wouldn’t have sent such a formidable power to Plovdiv.

"Heh heh, it seems Mr. Deneby is also a man of substance. Very well." Komer nodded. In his memory, apart from a Sheepskin Scroll, it seemed that only a ring looked to be of some value.

A slate-gray ring appeared in the palm of Komer’s hand, "Mr. Deneby, do you recognize this ring?"

"Oh, of course, I recognize it. It is an important token of our Pericles Church." Deneby felt as if his heart was about to leap out of his chest. He struggled to suppress the excitement in his heart. As expected, all the spoils of the thief from the Muxi Sect had fallen into his hands. If it hadn’t been for the desire to avoid more people knowing and thus not informing Kent and the others, how could it have led to so many troubles later? Now these items were finally going to return to the Pericles Church.

"Then, I will keep my promise. As for the other items, it will depend on your performance, Mr. Deneby from Pericles Church." Komer tossed the ring to him. At this moment, he dared not slacken in the slightest. The bunch at Pericles Church were no good birds. Now that they knew he had these items, who knew if they’d find it more profitable to launch a surprise attack and eliminate him? Such a scenario was not impossible, and he didn’t want to fall for such treachery.

"Lord Komer, what about that parchment scroll?" Deneby didn’t see clearly how the Soul Ring appeared in Komer’s hand, nor had he seen Komer make any movements, yet the Soul Ring appeared in his hand. Maybe he had always carried it on his person? But the Sheepskin Scroll didn’t seem like something he could carry on him.

"Heh heh, Mr. Deneby, you really are impatient. I’ve placed the parchment scroll somewhere very safe within enemy territory. I never imagined that Pericles Church would take such an interest in it, otherwise I would have carried it myself. I believe, in the future, we will have plenty of time to complete this exchange, right?" Komer said with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile, "For now, please fulfill your promise, Mr. Deneby."

With a nod of slight regret, Deneby was already very satisfied with his current gains. The return of the Soul Ring far exceeded his expectations. That guy Komer simply didn’t know the significance of the Soul Ring. Of course, to a dark cultivator, a Soul Ring of light might be meaningless, but to Pericles Church, to Sir Frenster, it was of utmost importance.

Komer coldly observed the dispute between Deneby and Kent.

The argument between the two also caused Trajan much unease. The two most important supporters of Pericles Church were ignoring the urgent situation before them and were arguing on the side. This was beyond Trajan’s comprehension. Could it be that Deneby was thinking of backing out at this moment? A sinister premonition slowly emerged in Trajan’s mind.

Enraged, Kent decisively denied Deneby’s unreasonable demand. Did Mr. Deneby lose his mind? To ask the Thunderhorse Knights to quietly withdraw from the Battlefield under such circumstances was beyond belief. Could it really be words spoken by Grand Mage Deneby? Did he not understand what this meant? It was betrayal! It was a betrayal against the entire Church of Light. Although Kent didn’t have much affection for St. Vasily Church or the Sky Peng Knights, and even more so only disdain for the Religious Court, they were all from the Church of Light. When facing provocation from the Dark Forces, they were supposed to stand united, and Deneby’s request was undoubtedly an overturning of his own faith.
