Chapter 913: Volume 29: The Distant Pointing of Sword Qi, Chapter 7: Entanglement

As soon as Komer boarded the ship sailing from Lake Nissai to Bruce Fortress, he fell into deep thought. The sudden appearance of Katya gave him an uneasy premonition; he felt he had been too neglectful of his allies’ feelings.

In fact, Komer was aware that the relationship between himself and his allies was superficial at best. Whether it was Katya or Hoffman, their value to him was diminishing, and their interests were increasingly diverging from his own intentions. It was not surprising, as he had never really intended for either Katya or Hoffman to ascend to the throne of the Kingdom of Nicosia. To be precise, maintaining a situation where Katya and Hoffman were mutually hostile and restraining each other suited his interests best, but clearly, this situation could not last forever.

The relationship between his side and both of theirs had evolved from mutual use to mutual perfunctory treatment. Katya and Hoffman were no fools; they too had noticed this shift. Their attitudes were subtly changing, realizing that they could never be true collaborators with him, perhaps leading them to other ideas. Yet, facing his dominance, they couldn’t harbour any other ulterior motives, but now, what about now?

Komer looked at the calm water surface, thoughtfully stroking his chin. Katya and Hoffman definitely wouldn’t be pleased to see his power continuously expanding, but now it seemed they were unable to stop his progression. Whether it was Galle or Silesia, those were not areas they could interfere in. Zellin and Nissa’s fear of the Romanov family was no less than their fear of him. Without the support of Katya and Hoffman, he was at most a bit passive in public opinion. But with a strength that far exceeded the others, how effective did they think public opinion could be? At most, it would only make his future appeasement efforts somewhat difficult.

However, it was necessary to prevent trouble before it happened. Over time, both he and Maha Gummi had somewhat neglected paying attention to Katya and Hoffman. Katya’s arrival seemed to wake him up, reminding him that even minor characters could sometimes stir up big trouble.

Komer had not yet fully realized the impending crisis. He was too arrogant. The long-standing smooth sailing had made him somewhat complacent; in his view, once the beastmen had been successfully drawn in by him, no one could change the overall situation.

After Komer returned to Bruce, those he considered minor characters did not, as he had imagined, contentedly wait for fate to unfold. Stirring up trouble seemed to be an inherent responsibility assigned to minor characters.

As soon as Katya left Livonia, she went directly to Godeburg. This was her first visit to Godeburg since the beastmen had occupied Jazair, a city that was a stronghold of Hoffman and did not welcome her. But at such a time, it seemed all could be set aside.

Katya’s movements were secretive and covert. If there were any choice, she certainly would not want to risk going to Godeburg, but circumstances forced her to shake hands with former opponents.

Hoffman, with perfect courtly etiquette, coldly initiated a truce with his half-sister. This was a choice made out of necessity. The reckless actions of the beastmen and Komer’s strong stance in the East had all of Nicosia trembling. The once scorned Romanov family appeared to have some utilitarian value in the eyes of the Galleians and Silesians. Hoffman believed that Katya, like himself, knew well that these fickle opportunists were unreliable. Yet, facing a common existential threat, forming an alliance for mutual protection was not unfeasible.

The atmosphere was somewhat awkward, but Katya, being very rational, avoided titles and topics that might have deadlocked the discussion. At this moment, what mattered most was how to contain the threat from the East. From Silesia to Galle to Cartin, and even Livonia, it seemed everyone present was under threat from that man.

"Has Archbishop Frenster’s envoy not arrived yet?" Katya looked around, slightly frowning. Onia was undoubtedly Vazinsky’s spokesperson, and although the Religious Court had not sent anyone to participate in this multilateral negotiation, everyone knew that the man had become the Court’s prime enemy. Whenever there was a chance, they would not hesitate. But today, the Frenster Clan should have been the protagonist. Without their involvement, it would not be so easy for the beastmen to halt.

Regarding the subtle relationship between the Frenster Clan and the beastmen, everyone maintained a peculiar unspoken understanding. It was certain that Frenster had considerable influence over the beastmen, as many facts had proven this point. However, the exact nature of the relationship between Frenster and the beastmen remained unclear to everyone.

"It’s not yet time," Hoffman shook his head. His gaze swept over the two solemn nobles sitting opposite him, whose crests signified they represented the Ferdinand Family and the Stolten Family. To use Komer’s words, they were members of that bunch of minor characters.

"Then we must wait a bit longer," Katya’s eyes sharpened. "Are you sure the Court won’t be coming?"

"Yes, they have already promised to send personnel as per the agreed requirements, but they will not participate in this negotiation," Hoffman felt his aura somewhat suppressed by the other, annoyance brewing within, yet found no outlet for it.

The room seemed to once again sink into silence and oppression. Hoffman lowered his eyelids, no longer looking around. He was not the main character now, but rather, a representative from the Pericles Church clan. Although previously they had shown dissatisfaction towards Komer’s actions, the extent of their effectiveness in this joint operation was yet to be determined after the discussions. Such a loose alliance was, in Hoffman’s view, extremely fragile, formed only due to immense pressure from the East, putting its success in serious doubt.

A silent figure finally appeared in everyone’s view. The envoy from Archbishop Frenster instantly attracted everyone’s attention, completely wrapped in light brown linen from head to toe, leaving only their eyes visible, which suggested the individual was not old; it was even difficult to discern their gender.

The Pericles Church did not have frequent dealings with Nicosia, and this area was not under the traditional influence of the Pericles Church, which had remained mysterious and low-profile over the years, making even Onia relatively unfamiliar with these peers, especially when the other side intentionally maintained secrecy.

However, the insignia the individual carried was sufficient proof of their identity, and upon seeing Onia’s somewhat surprised nod, Hoffman finally acknowledged the envoy’s identity with a nod.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I think our purpose for being here needs no extensive discussion," began the envoy from the Ferdinand Family. "We face the aggression of raiders from the north and the East, and we earnestly hope you can provide us with assistance. Duke Nissai has entrusted me to express his sincere thanks to you all," he began, opening the negotiation meeting with his dry remarks.

Immediately after, the envoy from Galle also described the difficulties Galle was facing, especially after the Beastmen’s Berserker Warriors had been struck, their retaliatory actions came one after another. Wolf Cavalry and Deer Cavalry raided hundreds of miles into the western part of Galle, even threatening the control zones in the central region of the kingdom, causing Hoffman’s heart to race. Meanwhile, vast waves of Cow Tribe and Sheep Infantry had completely surrounded Cologne City and its surrounding fortress cluster, yet they did not attack immediately, instead appearing to wait for reinforcements from Galle’s rear, seemingly preferring to face the Galle Army on the plains in a major battle.

"But this is not the most crucial issue," Hoffman continued. "If it were just the beastmen’s provocations, we would have the capacity to endure and overcome this difficulty. What we are more concerned about is the usurper behind us who might take advantage of our predicament to launch a sudden attack."

"Look at his actions over these years, look at his numerous despicable maneuvers, from a lord of a remote territory to seizing Lord Homer’s position, and now Poznan has fallen into his hands. Now, he is extensively spreading rumors and agitating the ignorant populace, preparing for his military actions. Ladies and Gentlemen, this man’s ambitions are clear as day, and merely Silesia and Galle will not satiate his appetite. Moreover, countless signs also indicate that this man surely has close ties with those remnants of Dark Forces reviving in the South, his actions also undoubtedly supported by those Dark Forces aiming to extend their Dark Power to the North. We suspect he is likely the vanguard of those Dark Forces, and Nicosia could very well be their first targeted victim! If everyone present does not take sufficient notice, perhaps one day, we all may become prisoners under this residue of darkness, and the entire map of Nicosia would be painted with a deathly black color bearing the skeleton mark!"

The eloquence of the Galle envoy, compared to that of the Silesian envoy, was distinctly superior; his detailed analysis and apt conjectures greatly strengthened the persuasive power of his speech, even captivate Katya, Hoffman, and the mysterious envoy.
