Chapter 904: Volume 28 Long Spear Plows the Courtyard Chapter 21 Royal Family
Komer stared blankly at the map in front of him. The once mighty Kingdom of Nicosia had now been reduced to this fragmented state outlined by dotted lines: the beastmen-controlled zone in the northwest, Silesia to the north, Galle in the center, the Cartin and Godeburg controlled areas to the south, plus his own territory to the east, forming this somewhat bizarre pattern.
It seemed that the beastmen were also tired; although Komer had always suspected that they could easily take down Cartin, Godeburg, and even the Silesian controlled area, the beastmen appeared to be content with their current situation, as if capturing Jazair, the royal city, satisfied them. Of course, to the beastmen, the glory of a Jazair was far greater than any other place, but Komer didn’t believe that their chiefs came just for glory—they were not knights.
But that was the situation now; the beastmen armies had quieted down, while their various vassal races rushed over, seizing the rich heritage left behind by mortals who had fled their homes. How to quickly adapt to the civilized world of mortals had become the most urgent task for the beastmen. And the mortals who remained in the beastmen control zone seemed to gradually get used to this change in the situation, facing the restraint shown by the beastmen, they found that they could live in harmony with those beastmen races, and even use their own advantages to win the respect of the beastmen.
The world had gone haywire!
This was the conclusion Komer reached after receiving the report on the actual situation in the Northern Beastman Control Zone from Maha Gummi.
The invaders and the conquered getting along so quickly and further harmonizing their relationships was unbelievable! If there wasn’t an incredibly intelligent genius among the beastmen, it could only mean that the humans in the occupied areas had degenerated far too quickly.
Komer shook his head; the north did not require his attention for now. Looking at the strange shape of his own territory on the map, from the northern border of Poznan to the Catania River shipping route, he now held the entire eastern Nicosia in his hands. Whether in terms of territory or population, no other lord in the kingdom could compare to him. However, his influence in the central and western parts was still weak. The mere Quke Valley couldn’t satisfy his appetite, and even all of Livonia was barely passable, yet Katya didn’t even want to give Livonia to him now.
Livonia was too far from his eastern territory, and the route between them mainly consisted of primitive forest. That was the main reason he and Puber made an all-out effort to set this trap for the Gisa People; without turning this pathway into an open road, exercising influence in the west would be an empty talk.
Komer had set his sights on the whole of Nicosia, but two major obstacles lay before him: resistance from the remaining forces, including the Galleians, and potential hostility from a coalition of secular and religious powers, with the latter being the more troublesome.
The lingering resistance could be eradicated with military power, but hostility and obstruction from secular and religious forces could force him to pay a steep price for every step forward, and it could even cost him two steps back. Neither the Romanov family nor secular powers like Zellin and Ferdinand would tolerate him easily gaining what once belonged to them. As for the Church of Light, needless to say, overturning him and trampling him so that he could never rise again was also their most fervent wish.
The only thing in his favor was that the forces opposing him were not united; whether it was among the secular powers or within the Church of Light, their internal contradictions were his opportunities.
However, opportunities did not mean that he would immediately obtain them. The current situation was in a delicate balance: the Church of Light and the Salvation Society were hard to separate as they fought both openly and covertly, while Cartin and Godeburg maintained a strange peace. Relations between Silesia, Galle, and himself were ambiguous due to the behind-the-scenes attitude of the beastmen, forcing him to remain silent. This odd situation formed a peculiar balance within Nicosia.
Perhaps it would take an external force to break this balance; only by disrupting it, stirring up chaos, could he find opportunities in disorder.
Komer tapped his fingers lightly on the map, his gaze wandering across it: Galle? Silesia? Or Cartin? Which would be the best point of entry, yet nothing seemed quite right just yet.
Komer’s gaze turned northward, d*** those beastmen, when did they also become sensible? If last time they had accepted his invitation to raid Silesia or Galle, perhaps all problems would have ceased to exist, Komer felt some regret. Muddying the waters was the best strategy, which could maximize the avoidance of blame directed by public opinion, and all sins could be pushed onto the beastmen. But, regrettably, the beastmen behaved too rationally and calmly, not falling for the bait.
It seemed that ultimately, he still needed to devise plans concerning the beastmen. If they didn’t take action, various forces within the kingdom would set their sights on him, and any move he made would attract their scrutiny. Only when the beastmen entered the fray and stirred up the situation, drawing all the focus onto themselves, would he have an opportunity.
Maha Gummi came to Komer’s study once again, feeling a bit puzzled. The report on the situation in Jazair that he had given to the Lord was already quite detailed. Could it be that the Lord was still not satisfied?
"Maha Gummi, I have read your report on the Jazair region, and it’s very detailed. It seems you have spent a lot of energy there. However, I am still not satisfied. I need you to help me based on all that you have gathered, as well as your personal analysis and judgment, to provide me with a more direct and accurate impression," Komer didn’t bother with pleasantries, getting straight to the point.
Upon hearing Komer’s words, Maha Gummi felt a chill in his heart. It seemed the Lord had some new idea brewing. Before any significant move from the Lord, there was always similar talk. He had the experience.
"Sir, please command me as you wish, I will withhold nothing."
"Hmm, you have spent some time in Jazair, and the network of intelligence workers there should be quite developed. I want to know what the actual situation of the beastmen is like in Jazair and the entire Northern Region of the kingdom. Apart from their relations with mortals in the area, what is the relationship between the tribes of beastmen like? Is their relationship as close-knit as we imagine? And what about those servant tribes, do they have conflicts with the five major tribes? Do they have conflicts among themselves?"
It was clear that Komer had given deep thought before asking this series of questions. He believed that every seemingly solid entity could not be as perfect as it appeared on the surface. Composed of many tribes of varying sizes, it was impossible for the beastmen to have completely aligned interests, or for their chieftains’ views and thoughts to be entirely without divergence. If opportunities for exploitation could be found, his plans might not be impossible to achieve.
Maha Gummi took in a breath of cold air. This Lord of his seemed never willing to rest. Just from these few sentences, one could infer that he was probably scheming against the beastmen again. The fierce and brutal beastmen, though ferocious, appeared to be fated to fall if targeted by the Lord, in Maha Gummi’s eyes.
"Sir, Jazair has now become what is called the capital of the Beamon Kingdom. While a large number of mortals still live within the city, the six great royal tribes of beastmen have started to see it as their center. Among these tribes, the Tiger Clan is currently the leader, backed by the Bear and Cow Tribes, while the other two royal tribes—the Wolf and Fox Clans—are closely aligned. The Snake Tribe remains neutral."
"Among the beastmen’s six royal tribes, the Tiger Clan’s martial power lies mainly in heavy assault infantry, while the Bear Clan’s martial prowess is based on heavy defensive infantry. The Cow Tribe represents natural light infantry. The Wolf Clan serves as light cavalry, another significant force in the beastmen’s armed strength. The skill level of the Fox Clan Feather Archers is on par with the Elf Archers among us humans. The Snake Clan’s martial power primarily involves scouts and assassins and is rarely seen on the frontline in combat. Among other servant tribes, the Leopard Tribe, servants to the Tiger Clan, the Deer Tribe, servants to the Wolf Clan, and the relatively independent and neutral Eagle Tribe Knights, all possess considerable combat strength."
"Hmm, are you saying that the Tiger, Bear, Cow, and Leopard Tribes are aligned together, while the Wolf, Fox, and Deer Tribes are another alignment, with the Snake and Eagle Tribes maintaining neutrality?" Komer asked thoughtfully.
"That’s a rough split, but there are many other servant tribes. However, those tribes are relatively weaker in martial power, unable to play a leading role in war and naturally lacking any say within the beastmen tribes. The main attendees in the Tribal Leaders’ Meeting are the six royal tribes," confirmed Maha Gummi with a nod.
"In that case, there should be contradictions and disagreements between the alliance of the Tiger Clan and that of the Wolf Clan. Maha Gummi, with the time you spent in Jazair, have you seen any signs of this?" Komer seemed to have sensed something, his eyes flashing with keen insight. (To be continued.
