Chapter 890: Volume 28: The Long Spear Tills the Courtyard, Chapter 7: Balance

The beastmen unexpectedly took no action, which greatly surprised Komer. In his view, such an opportunity was an irresistible temptation for the beastmen, yet they had actually declined the bait. This frustrated Komer’s original plan to use the beastmen’s invasion of Silesia as a chance to take over Rundbell and the Kechin area in one fell swoop. While desires are beautiful, reality is often disappointing. Although Komer was confident that his current army could easily crush the Silesians, the Galleians were still loitering on the border, the Church of Light had issued its sternest condemnation and warning, and with the beastmen’s inscrutable intentions, Komer had no choice but to be cautious.

"These beastmen seems not as simple as we imagined. They actually declined our invitation. How could they show no interest in such a fertile stretch of land as Silesia?" Komer couldn’t figure it out, as in his view, the inherently greedy beastmen should find it impossible to resist such a temptation.

"Lord Komer, didn’t you once suggest that the beastmen might have some connection with the Church of Light? The renewed threats and blackmail from the Church of Light, along with the special relationship between the Silesians and the Church of Light as well as the bizarre loss of Saint Nicholas Fortress in the last war—could there be some link among the three?" Rebry casually remarked while examining the lord’s mansion. The Heine family had quite the appreciation level: the rich Baroque style blended perfectly with Byzantine flavors, making the lord’s mansion appear like a magnificent cluster of palaces. "The Heine family’s dedication to these buildings is truly lamentable. It would be terribly unfortunate for one to lose all of this."

"It’s a pity that everything that should have remained here was moved onto ships by that Ebson guy. What a spoil-sport brute he is. Does he not understand that many things lose their value once removed from here? Look at these ornaments on the walls; he even removed those. That’s just too excessive!" Puber complained indignantly. "Komer, you’re too indulgent with Ebson; his behavior has completely exceeded what a loser deserves."

"Is that so? I don’t think so. All I know is that his behavior made it very easy for us to get a footing here. Without his cooperation, we may have faced many unforeseen troubles. I believe his contribution is worth our expenditure," Komer disagreed.

"Hmph, you’re always so extravagant. At this rate, no matter how much wealth you have, you’ll squander it all." Puber was very dissatisfied with some of Komer’s actions, but each time, Komer would justify it with strategic needs, leaving Puber with no room to interject, only able to grumble privately.

"Enough, Puber, remember, you’re now the Administrative Officer of the entire Homer-Boznan-Caucasus-Flanders domain. Don’t make me listen to your constant nattering about these trivial matters. It makes me doubt your ability for macro planning. Your responsibility is to ensure the smooth operation of the entire territory, not some house’s decor," Komer cut off the other person, who won’t stop chattering without a strong response. "I think we should focus back on what Rebry said, that’s what really requires our attention now."

"Beastmen, the Church of Light, Silesians—there must be some tacit understanding or special relationship between them. But it’s hard to believe that the beastmen could be linked to the Church of Light." Rebry pondered for a moment, then said, "There can’t be more than five people in the Church of Light who would dare do such a thing, but those with both the guts and motives seem even fewer."

"Hmm, the targeted assassination of Eve and her Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group by an unknown force must be related to this issue. The beastmen’s significant breakthrough in the Northern Wars would be impossible without some beyond our imagination reasons. For so many years, the beastmen were merely harassing the borders. The harm they caused was even less than that of the southern barbarians, but in the last war, the appearance of siege weapons was a start. The beastmen couldn’t possibly have created such devices without external help. To be honest, I am more inclined that it was some mortal forces that provided the beastmen with these instruments. The experiences of Havier, Bayezid, and Burianos prove my guess."

Komer’s words stirred up a storm, and Rebry was particularly taken aback, "Lord Komer, I remember you mentioned this matter before, but you were rather vague. Can you tell us the specifics?"

Komer laid out everything he knew. The harrowing tale of the Dark Night Angel Mercenary Group transporting contraband in the Northern Alliance and the subsequent assassination attempts left everyone present utterly shocked. Komer’s words implied that many national forces within the Northern Alliance were involved, so who was the mysterious hand behind it all, orchestrating so many forces to stifle any potential upheaval?

"Who in the Church of Light could wield such immense power that can mobilize many of the countries in the Northern Alliance? This is not something an ordinary person could achieve," Rebry mused. "I think we can narrow down our suspicions. Neither Noyola nor Welch could do it; only Vazinsky and Frenster can barely manage it."

"Vazinsky doesn’t seem to have the motive. If the beastmen invaded the North, he would be negatively affected, so it’s unlike he would destroy his own defenses. Thus, the mysterious player nearly reveals himself," Komer pondered, stroking his chin. "Why would Sir Frenster do this, and what could he gain? It seems unlikely that he could keep it from Julius, too. Isn’t he afraid of Julius’s punishment?"

"No, Lord Komer, you don’t fully understand the internal affairs of the Church of Light or His Holiness the Pope’s personality. The balance of power within the Church comes from His Holiness’s impartiality. If he shows any bias easily, it could tilt the entire balanced structure, even leading to its collapse. Even His Holiness may not be able to reverse it," Rebry said with a wry smile, for such matters are not to be discussed with outsiders.

"I understand now. With a definite target, things will become much easier. It seems that Sir Frenster also intends to create a small balance among the beastmen, Silesians, and us, assuming the role of the savior and arbitrator. How fascinating. As long as we don’t openly declare war on the Church of Light, it seems we have to give him some face, right? Interesting, truly interesting," Komer laughed. (To be continued.
