Chapter 847: Volume 26 Ready to Launch Chapter 10 Mixed Magic Array

The halo of the Hexagonal Star Tower gradually expanded, with the pale yellow halo continuously spreading around until, at the center of the formation, it merged to form a blurred light ball. The ground surged like a huge monster was unleashing its might underground, with bulges and depressions alternating, making the ground within a hundred meters resemble a violently undulating sea, its severe shaking making people standing at the perimeter feel somewhat unstable.

Clarence’s forehead was already covered in beads of sweat, his pale cheeks contrasting with his eyes, which appeared even brighter, fixating intensely on the circles of light projected by the six towers. The merged light ball then soaked downwards again, infiltrating the ground.

Clarence could barely control his own power anymore, the immense mana consumption made him feel as though the building was evacuated, leaving him so weak that he was almost losing the strength to stand. The intense backlash erupting from within almost overwhelmed his consciousness completely in an instant, forcing him to bite his own tongue, using the severe pain to fiercely resist this wave of dangerous over-expenditure. His entire bloodstream seemed as if it were about to boil, and Clarence could feel his body had been completely soaked in sweat. The backlash intensified wave after wave, like a raging flood assaulting the shaky dam, which, if it were to collapse, would either leave him a complete fool or cause him to die on the spot from a catastrophic rupture of his blood vessels.

Clarence realized he couldn’t hold on any longer; the severe pain in his mouth still couldn’t fend off the absolute force assaulting his mental threshold. This seemingly grand Earth Magic Array wasn’t solely composed of earth-based magic; if that were the case, even adding two mages of his own caliber wouldn’t suffice to drive such a massive Earth Magic Array. He originally wasn’t very interested in this type of Earth Magic Array, but Lord Komer, the figure behind him, was very intrigued by this large-scale Earth Magic Array, and so he had to grudgingly cater to the other’s curiosity.

It was clear to anyone with eyes that this was a Mixed Magic Array. The six towers in the sky arranged into a six-pointed star were obviously a Star Magic Array, which leveraged the power of stars and then channeled it into the Earth Magic Array. Such a thought probably only Lord Komer could harbor, yet someone still had to implement his audacious idea, leaving that damnable Star Mage to unwittingly drag him into this mess.

The unrestrained power of the Star Magic was now fully channeled into the slowly activating Earth Magic Array, and the responsibility of controlling such vast power and driving the operation of this Earth Magic Array fell to Clarence, nearly severing his meridians to accomplish this.

Lome’s delicate fingers lifted, releasing a stream of white mist that slowly infused into Clarence’s back, a powerful mana penetrating his body like a cold ice flow entering Clarence’s system, causing his blood, already boiling at its peak, to suddenly subside. The cold and heat, two completely opposing forces, battled and finally merged within Clarence, giving him an indescribable comfort. It was a transformative cleansing, as if his entire circulatory system had been thoroughly cleared, making the flow of his mana much smoother all at once.

At this moment, Clarence could finally breathe a sigh of relief. He knew that each time he survived such a life-and-death trial, not only would his understanding of magic deepen, but his foundational mana would also become much more substantial. However, the unbearable feeling of teetering on the edge of magical insanity made Clarence wonder if it was worth it to seek such opportunities twice more or if he should stop here.

With changes in the gestures of Clarence’s hands, the entire earth began to turn over as though suddenly struck by a wild, subterranean current. The soil and trees tumbled continuously, giant trenches and pits appeared chaotically before everyone, and in just a few seconds, the ground within a hundred meters had endured the dual assault of a tornado and an earthquake, becoming wildly disordered. Deep two-meter pits and trenches, irregular caves and small holes, and suddenly rising mounds changed the entire landscape drastically; this was the "earth-shaking" Mixed Magic originating from a large-scale Earth Magic Array.

This type of Mixed Magic Array actually carries little value in magic duels or duels between mages and warriors; however, its power in large-scale warfare was imaginable. Whether in trench warfare or siege warfare, if one could initiate such a magic array, which typically requires either a Great Mage or a large group of mages to execute, its power could truly rival an army. Clarence also knew this was why Lord Komer was so keenly engrossed in researching this type of magic array.

When Clarence collapsed to the ground, panting like a bull, Newman beside him already looked on the brink of collapse, his pale cheeks ashen like those of a dead man, his lifeless eyes lacking the strength to even move. Apart from his figure breathing hard like a bellows and his uneven chest heaving, he looked just like a recently deceased zombie. Even with Eve’s full support of White Magic, Newman had nearly failed to hold on. The gap in their innate mana couldn’t be completely compensated for by external forces, and Newman was well aware of this fact.

"Well done, Clarence. It seems your mana has made significant progress. In the future, even without Lome’s support, if you prepare a few significant Magic Scrolls, you could still perform this magic," Komer nodded in satisfaction, then his gaze fell on Newman, "Newman, you are still far from enough. Eve has already helped you with all her might, yet you still haven’t reached my goal. If I hadn’t intervened at the last moment, your Star Magic might have sucked you into the Different World Space to become a wandering ghost. You need to push yourself even harder."

"Lord Komer, I have done my best. You know I was not very familiar with Star Magic initially, it was under your guidance that I gradually got accustomed to it. Even I am surprised by the level I have reached now. My strength lies in Magic Mechanisms, asking me to make further progress in Star Magic is somewhat an unreasonable demand," Newman said while gasping for breath and still signaling Eve to give him another White Magic to help him recover. Although his face was deathly pale, his eyes had begun to show a trace of spirit.

"Hmph, I am not dissatisfied with your achievements in Star Magic, rather it is your fundamental mana that is far too weak. I hope you can improve your cultivation of mana. It is extremely difficult for you to rely solely on Eve’s supporting mana. Without Eve, relying only on Magic Scrolls, could you achieve what you did today?"

Komer also realized he might be pushing too fast. Newman was not yet a qualified Star Magic mage. Although he had a deep understanding of Magic Mechanisms and a broad exposure to various magics, he was weakest in mana. The opponent had reached such a level in such a short time, which was already satisfactory to Komer. However, he had no more mages skilled in this method and had to rely on a sort of grafting through Mixed Magic to execute large-scale Earth Magic.

"Lord Komer, the improvement of mana can’t be achieved in a day or two, please forgive my inability in this matter. I consider what I have achieved so far quite remarkable. Magic Arrays are not my forte. Generally, it requires stronger or more mages to be supported, not just one or two priests or supporting magic," Newman bluntly refused that aspect, he lacked considerable interest in cultivating mana further. For Newman, possessing enough mana to create and research various Magic Mechanisms was sufficient; he was more interested in the combination of Machinery Arts and Magic which constituted Magic Mechanisms, which was his true pursuit. In the cultivation of magic, he also preferred breadth over depth. He was not willing to let his interests be restricted by anyone. If it was about going with the flow, he might comply, but asking him to give up his passions was absolutely out of the question.

Komer felt a bit of regret as everyone had their own aspirations and could not be forced. Newman’s interest was not solely in magic but in a derivative of magic—Magic Mechanisms, and Komer understood this. He had hoped that guiding him a bit in Star Magic might spark his interest, but it seemed not to have worked, and now this Earth-based Mixed Magic Array still lacked finesse, and he had to rely on support or even himself to control it. On the battlefield, even a slight misstep could cause the magic array to fail, and Komer didn’t want to risk this lightly.

"It seems we cannot agree on this point, and that is truly regrettable." Komer did not elaborate further. These mages had peculiar personalities, and he did not want to strain their relationship over this issue, especially since he would rely heavily on Newman in the future. He already had some new ideas. Since Newman was so engrossed in designing and making Magic Mechanism Equipment, why couldn’t he utilize his strengths in that area? Especially when his army might face the Beastman Army in the future, whether in sieges or trench warfare, perhaps they could play a special role.(To be continued.
