Chapter 811: 24 Beacon Fires Connecting the Camps 20 Stinking Meat_2
"Puber, what do you think?" Thinking it over, Komer was still undecided. Evading was not a solution; he could delay for a while, but not forever, especially since the Salvation Society was still awaiting his response, and it seemed there was no one else to consult except Puber. In fact, Komer didn’t have much hope in Puber’s perspective, as he didn’t think Puber could offer any good advice.
Puber had been recruited by Komer from Ugru; he was preparing for the era of both Homer and Caucasus co-existing. As Lord Homer, Komer could no longer focus solely on Caucasus, and neither could Puber, but Caucasus couldn’t possibly be subordinate to Homer either, especially when the entirety of Greater Caucasus, including Leon, had become a completely independent and free economic body.
Puber had not expected Komer to summon him to consult on such a matter; he initially thought Komer would ask him about how to manage Homer, which greatly angered him.
"Why not accept? The Lady of the Romanov family, isn’t she the one you’ve always dreamed of? And those other two national princesses, you could gladly accept them too! Don’t you have three territories? Why do such matters always fall upon you? Why does no one consult my marital status?" Puber complained bitterly, "These opportunistic guys, just using their daughters and sisters as bargaining chips, it’s disgraceful!"
"Yes, it is disgraceful, I think so too," Komer nodded and said with a slight smile, "But what if they were preparing to marry their daughters off to you? Would you accept then?"
"Why not? With a hefty dowry, perhaps even a piece of land as part of the marriage portion, only a fool would refuse such opportunities to gain both wealth and property!" Puber blurted out, realizing his slip when he saw Komer’s cunning smile.
"Then why are you pretending to be so pure around me?" Komer said viciously, "I asked you to help me weigh the pros and cons, not to vent your own feelings of loss and jealousy!"
"Don’t you consider my feelings at all? You’re being too cruel. You pick and choose as you please but disregard us who haven’t even caught a whiff of a woman, and then you trample on our injured souls like this. Is this how a friend acts?" Puber shrieked.
"Enough, quit your pretense of purity. I bet there’s hardly a woman left in Ugru you haven’t harassed. You think I don’t know?" Komer said, both annoyed and amused.
After a pause, Puber studied Komer’s expression to make sure he wasn’t joking, then erupted angrily, "Komer, keep that damned Half-beastman Hybrid away from me. My private life is not to be interfered with by anyone, including you! This is an invasion of my personal rights and privacy!"
"As a Lord, I have the right to be informed about everything that happens in my territory. Your right to privacy must first submit to my right to know," Komer responded, not smiling genuinely. He really didn’t have the energy to concern himself with Puber’s private matters; a simple trick like this was enough to make Puber rage, indicating that this guy had indeed caused trouble with many women in Ugru.
Rendered speechless by Komer’s words, Puber glared at Komer with a huff, "What pros and cons are there to analyze? If you’re willing, you could marry all three women, settling one in each place. You would still be able to gallivant and misbehave as much as you wish."
"Please don’t project the true story of your life onto me; I don’t recall being as filthy and boring as you," Komer sighed, rolling his eyes, "Enough, enough, I won’t expose your misdeeds any further. Maha Gummi isn’t interested in your scandals either, let’s focus on the real issues."
Seeing Komer back down, Puber felt much relieved. He believed Komer would not intrude on his private life. Komer now had too many concerns, and a lack of capable people to share the burden. With many tasks demanding his personal involvement and few confidants to rely on for difficult issues.
"Boss, I think we should consider Princess Renta. After all, both Homer and Caucasus are still within the Kingdom of Nicosia. The Romanov family still holds considerable influence across Nicosia, and our reputation in Homer isn’t good, which you and I are both aware of. If we were to form a marital alliance with a member of the Romanov family, especially since Renta’s maternal family holds significant sway in the North centered around Jazair, it could help us turn around some disadvantages and solidify your position within Nicosia. At least, many nobles around Godeburg are deeply connected with Renta’s maternal family—the Anson family. With the support of the Anson family, the kingdom’s traditional noble factions’ hostile attitudes toward us might improve."
Seeing Komer unmoved, Puber couldn’t help but add: "Vero should understand, as love for someone in your position is but a luxury. If you truly can’t let go, you could still offer Vero a title after your engagement to Renta. I personally think the Duchess of Flanders would suit her well. As for Lome, Eve, and Grace, I feel you have never intended to marry them, so they could be ruled out."
